One of the challenges facing small language Wikipedia is low contributions by native speakers. Most of the contents on small languages Wikipedia are either written by bots or non-native speakers who sometimes use Google translator or similar machines to translate contents on these languages Wikipedia. These cause severe damage to the quality and credibility of these languages Wikipedia. Readers don't have access to basic articles in their native languages since most of the contents are poor in quality. In line with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy Recommendations on Innovate in Free Knowledge, Contribute to Wikipedia in your language project was designed as a new experiment to support small language Wikipedia. If successful, this may serve as a model for other small languages Wikipedia.

This experiment was inspired by this Wikimania session in 2021.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Yes, we are doing a total of 16 pieces of training.
  • 20 series of zoom training
  • 2 in-person training in Lagos.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

  • In November 2021, we display a CentralNotice banner where we asked readers of Wikipedia to register for free Yoruba Wikipedia training using this form. More than 1,000 people registered to be trained. We contacted them using their emails and phone numbers. Some of them indicated that they would like to be trained on zoom while others preferred physical training. The physical training would be held in Lagos.
More than 120 new editors already created account on the Yoruba Wikipedia in readiness for the training. See also the new users account creation log on the Yoruba Wikipedia.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

There would be mentorship programs. The participants would be grouped and each of the groups would be mentored by experienced editors.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events - 22 events (20 online and 2 offline events)
  2. Number of participants reached - 1,010
  3. Number of new editors who registered an account - 150 (See the project dashboard)
  4. Number of articles created or improved - 200
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) - 100

  • Internet for trainers and mentors for 3 months: USD 150 per month X 5 trainers x 3 months = USD 2,250

  • Small gift voucher for trainers and mentors: USD 50 per person x 5 = USD 250

  • Food and drinks: USD 10 X 50 x 2 days = USD 1000
  • Hall rentals : USD 193 x 2 days = USD 386
  • Data Bundle: = USD 48
  • Local travels for facilitators: USD 150
  • Nose Mask: USD 20
  • Digital flier for social media : USD 50
  • Certificate of participation : USD 100
  • Branded Shirts for 5 facilitators: USD 60.34
