Proposed participation[edit]

I am an Wikipedian and Wikimedian who strongly focuses on digital rights and public policy issues of the movement. Since the Anti-ACTA actions and SOPA/PIPA blackouts I have been organising the EU policy activities and motivating and assisting groups in Bulgaria, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, South Africa, Ireland, Ukraine and Armenia to work on legal issues. The next important steps for the Wikimedia movement are to coordinate its policy activities globally and to identify partners that can help us progress on core goals. I really believe it is important and would help the cause to talk in person with key people and organisations from all around the world who come together at RightsCon in San Francisco. To make use of potential synergies, I would also spend one or two days before the conference in the WMF office to talk policy strategy and connect with the teams working on public policy.

Goal and expected impact[edit]

  • Direct meetings with organisations such as IREX, Global Voices, Freedom of Press Foundation and Mideast Youth to discuss potentially overlapping goals and explore potential partnerships.
  • Meeting with WMF Legal policy team to work on coordination plan for the rest of the year.
  • Meeting the WMF Communications policy team to draft "talking points" and "preferred terms" to be used in policy work.
  • Attending and assisting the EU Data Protection panel to demonstrate the uniquely balanced global position of Wikimedia on this topic and raising awareness of our specific challenges.

Budget breakdown[edit]

  • Travel (round trip airfare from Brussels to San Francisco): EUR 1000
  • Accommodation: EUR 47 per night x 7 nights = EUR 329
  • Conference ticket: EUR 422
  • M & IE: EUR 40 per day x 7 days = EUR 280

Other instructions[edit]

It would be of great help if WMF could directly book my flights, conference ticket and accommodation, as my credit card limit is lower than the expected amount.
