wy[edit]

I've not looked into what you did here, but if possible it's better to use the voy: code everywhere. Thanks, Nemo 13:39, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello Nemo, The reason why I used wy is the following: wb is used there for Wikibooks, wn for Wikinews, wp for Wikipedia, wq for Wikiquote, ws for Wikisource, wv for Wikiversity, and all these are the same codes as used on Incubator. To stay in line with these codes I used the wy for Wikivoyage as that is used on Incubator as well. I do not mind changing it, but if someone uses a system, I try to follow that until changed otherwise. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 06:02, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

We could greatly use your help doing some quick translations for the SecurePoll (voting) interface that will be used for this years Board and FDC elections. The translation consists of a short, 2 sentence, intro for the vote and 3 short 'titles' saying which vote or question they will be on. The page also lists the candidates for each election which do not need to be translated but can be transliterated if that makes sense for your language/script. Thank you! Stop[edit]

US banners are for US volunteers, thank you very much. We are having a serious problem with lack of contributors and you have no right to interfere. (maybe you do, but I'd appreciate it if we could try out a more descriptive banner because our bounce rate is through the roof - no one knows what the heck Wiki Loves Monuments is). You are also not the supreme arbiter of all things WLM. Mono 22:41, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Why are you claiming US banners? The international team has set it up, not to be taken over by US volunteers, but to be maintained by the international team. From the beginning I asked you to communicate, if you can't than keep away. Clear? Romaine (talk) 23:01, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
I'd be more than happy to delegate them to you - I'd like the bounce rate down to 30% (and I have no clue why the US has their own campaign). How's that sound? Mono 03:11, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
How is that specific rate defined/counted and how do you want to get that rate down? I am worried if you say you don't now why the US has their own campaign, as that campaign was specifically requested by the US WLM team last year and confirmed this year. The notice is build in a way that only one text can be used for each each language. Specifically the US requested another text for the USA as another line of text would better fit with the US audience. Romaine (talk) 17:00, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
...I don't see why the US has it's own campaign when they can't even make changes to it. That's what I don't get. Anyway, the bounce rate is the number of people that click the banner and then they just close the tab or go back or leave. We want them to engage with the contest and a high bounce rate means this isn't happening. I was hoping that with more descriptive banner test people would bounce less, but I have no way of predicting that. Mono 18:12, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
The CentralNotice is a tool set up by the international team, for the people in the US, that two groups of banners are used is purely technical and internal for the coordinators. For the Wikimedia movement it is only one banner. If anything goes wrong, people blame the international team so we want to keep control over it.
Two days ago the banner system was messed up with your edits, you changed also a lot that concerned us much.
Two causes are possible for a high bounce rate, the notice text suggests something that is not enough clear or is not matching with the page it links to. That second issue is playing for more sites. We have it with the NL site too, as it appears that compared with Belgium, they (NL) got more visitors and a relative high bounce rate compared with BE, and they discuss now how to improve the site to enable a better flow of the visitor. Visiting the website for WLM US thinking as an anonymous user, I miss a logo of some kind to keep the website recognizable as related to Wikipedia or to the logo of the contest. I must say I miss that with several other websites too. But there are also other factors on a site that can be improved perhaps. The first issue can be improved if the US team thinks another line of text would be better for the CentralNotice. Romaine (talk) 22:46, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Help test better mass message delivery[edit]

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:26, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

CentralNotice for WM-AR event[edit]

Hi Romaine! I hope you are ok.

I'm trying to create a CentralNotice banner for a hackathon we are organizing in Wikimedia Argentina. I've tried to follow the steps on Help:CentralNotice but is clearly for those with permissions to create the banners (and I don't have that permission) and it doesn't say anything about how to proceed, besides posting the proposed banners on CentralNotice/Calendar. I've seen that you uploaded a banner recently so I would like to know how to proceed and if someone can create the banner (or what is needed to create it). --Osmar Valdebenito (WMAR) (talk) 18:54, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello Romaine,

Dear translators,

I have updated the Eligibility Requirements page for the Project and Event Grants program, and re-organized the information to be more readable, as well as easier to translate.

Your help in bringing this information to different language communities has tremendous value: many people are timid about grants, and having to digest all this relatively-formal information in English makes it even more scary.

Your translations can help more Wikimedians apply for funding, and thereby enable more awesome work to take place around the world. Thank you for your valuable efforts!

Translate some names for hundreds software projects including MediaWiki[edit]

Hello, I'm writing you because you subscribed to a Language support team. As you know, Wikimedia projects exist in almost 300 languages; supporting them all is a big effort so we partner with other organisations. One small but visible thing we miss is that many interwiki links in sidebar (among others) don't offer a translation of the language name when hovered. We're now able to translate 100 more language names in your language.

If you're interested, I can create you an account to submit translations on the CLDR web tool (within June 14): please send an email to ask one and I'll follow up with instructions. On CLDR you can translate and tweak many other things, if you desire; your work will impact hundreds of software projects. Thanks, Nemo 17:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:19, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Re:[edit]

Hi there, thanks for your note. As you certainly have noticed, VE gets updated, sometimes even quite significantly, once a week. Keeping up with the documentation is therefore quite hard, and that's why we actually don't insist on translations that much (we do post some generic notes on the newsletter from time to time, but those appeals are not much effective. If we wanted people to actively work on translations, we'd ask that in many other different ways). So what those appeals are good for is that when someone actually gets to translate something, s/he will notice something not so clear, or outdated, and so on, and will tell us about it. At that point, upon specific remarks, we're able to intervene or even just to say "you are completely right, please do change the page as you suggest". We do not "own" documentation: while we do want to provide good documentation and keep it up to date, whatever is on those pages necessarily needs further scrutiny. This is in a way similar to the more generic process of writing; one would think the writer knows best, but it's actually the people who review, proofread and copyedit who are able to point to flaws (and fix them). In our case, my humble opinion is that documentation needs to be very easy to understand for editors, especially not particularly experienced ones: while the documentation lives at mediawiki.org, it will probably always assume that people are "techie" enough to understand it the way the way product managers, developers and experienced code contributors can (and that's why we need non-expert eyes to actually tell us where it is failing). So: the work of updating docs like the user guide is always ongoing, but in the meantime, it is still quite useful if people bring their own language progress to high levels, because we would be mostly adding content rather than changing it (so their work would not be in vain, and anyway it's easier to make minor updates in time rather than having to go from 0% to 100% in the same day); more generally speaking, software documentation the way we know it might change significantly when projects like mw:Dev.wikimedia.org are fully active (a colleague liaison of mine also has this idea that at some point in time we should be able to write different kind of documentation with different audiences in mind). I'll make sure someone addresses your point when it's possible. Thank you, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:21, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi Elitre, It is a subject that matters to everyone, so Kroeg is fine. The users decided earlier that they want to see it there. SHEIC is our technical bar, so yes it should be there as the VE newsletter is technical and also that technical bar serves as archive for these newsletters. And on the VE page is fine too. The user who removed the target acted on his own (again), without any communication on nl-wiki about this, etc. His behaviour is disturbing and causes a lot of trouble which is repaired by various users. If you notice this edit by him again, please revert or let me know. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 11:44, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Keeping to topic at meta[edit]

Hi Romaine. Bringing issues from other wikis into topic matters encourages those who speak off-topic and create dramaz to repeat their behaviour here. If someone is being problematic then as with other wikis, it can be useful to utilise user talk pages then escalate to admins where the polite approach has not worked.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:49, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi billinghurst, I had not the intention to import issues from other wikis. But if someone is importing something to bring me in discredit by telling only half the story, I add the rest of it to make sure other people do not get a wrong impression. I have learned that it is better to supplement half of a story to a full picture, because not doing that would normally lead to more dramaz (as we noticed on nl-wiki). The intention of some users is to bring other users in discredit by telling only half the story. The polite approach with this user already failed months ago. Getting attention for it has not resulted in a solution. Romaine (talk) 13:52, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
Never have an idiotic fight with an idiot, they beat for you experience. Sustaining or fuelling an argument, even with fact, rarely makes any difference to those, and you simply can see that by the import of the discussion and methodology here. So keep yourself nice, then let others deal with the issue. Credibility for you is not an issue through the movement.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:36, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Romaine! I see that the banner is now active in English Wikipedia. How can be active in Catalan Wikipedia too? There's a clear consensus. The translation is:

Les fotos d'obres en l'espai públic han de romandre a la Viquipèdia

Una proposta del Parlament Europeu posa en perill milers d'imatges de la Viquipèdia.

The link is Viquipèdia:Llibertat de panorama d'Europa --Davidpar (talk) 17:22, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Hello Davidpar, The English community is acting on their own. But I can add the Catalan text to their banner and activate it for Catalan speakers in Europe. But I miss a translation in Catalan to be complete. In the banner is the text "Learn more...". Can you translate it to Catalan for me? When provided I will activate it. Hello Valimali67, This can be done at Freedom of Panorama in Europe in 2015/Banner. Some of us will notice it and implement it. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 18:56, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Ok! So I should create a page with title "Libertatea fotografiilor de panorama din Europa în 2015" (in Romanian) and after that I should introduce the informations there: Freedom of Panorama in Europe in 2015/Banner. Is it correct? --Valimali67 (talk) 19:05, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Hello Alice Wiegand, That is an excellent idea, thank you! I should have done that, but had missed that because of the large amount of work that the start of Wiki Loves Monuments brings in the final days before the contest starts. Hello Romaine, as we are reorienting the contest this year in Spain (focusing on missing monuments and municipalities). Could you replace the banner text "¡Fotografía un monumento, ayuda a Wikipedia y gana!" by "¡Ayuda a Wikipedia y gana!
Fotografía monumentos y municipios que carecen de fotos."? Thanks! Poco a poco (talk) 16:39, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Poco a poco, It is not possible to adjust this text there, as that would mean that everyone in the world who speaks Spanish gets this message. What I can do instead is creating a separate banner, but that is very unhandy. I have asked someone for help if I can use some javascript to use a different text only in Spain. Hi Romaine. Could you please tell me how I got onto your distribution list and why I receive these messages? To my knowledge, I've never participated in any WLE. Storkk (talk) 23:52, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Storkk, The list is based on this tool's output. This tool (not my tool) gives as output all the users who have uploaded an image as part of Wiki Loves Earth in 2014. The tool says that you uploaded 3 images as part of Wiki Loves Earth 2014. Checking your uploads I can find three images that you uploaded during the contest period that contain the Wiki Loves Earth template: File:Trabalho de campo.jpg + File:Small fungus in wooded area.jpg + File:Cocoon on tree.jpg. Three images in what you cropped the image or removed the watermark, and afterwards uploaded a new version of the file. So yes, you uploaded a file that participated in Wiki Loves Earth 2014, however as uploader of a newer version you should not have been listed in the tool. The tool is clearly broken and needs to be fixed. My apologies for the bot message, it was not intended for you, but you are welcome to participate if you like. Please sign new Wikimedia confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information by 31 December[edit]

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

Wikimedia Foundation logo - vertical (2012-2016).svg

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that OTRS volunteers sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum@wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your OTRS access. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

- This is the part of a series of community consultation pages. The WMF Community Advocacy team has put together a list at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016_Strategy/Translations. We're hoping to launch the consultation on January 18th. Realizing getting all translations in place before the launch of the consultation may not be possible (and that people will likely help with translations after the launch), I'd be really grateful for any assistance especially that you can give in translating the templates at that Meta page link, like this one. It'll probably be harder for casual translators to help out with those!

- Text should be stable at this point. I've just made what I hope will be the last modification to those pages!

- Thank you for all you do, and I hope you will not only assist in translation (if you are able) but also take part in the consultation. Your input will be very welcome.

- Questions or concerns? Please let me know at mdennis@wikimedia.org. Thanks! Maggie

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

WPCube.png

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016[edit]

Hi Romaine!

At the hackathon in Jerusalem JeanFred, Multichill and Lokal_Profil did a WLM sprint for this year's competition. We've outlined a few things in phabricator task T131500, but the gist of it is that there's no capacity for technical improvements at the moment, and a move to Wikidata is currently out of the question. Not sure if you or Ilario are going to write the grant again this year, but I thought I'd let you know about the current technical situation.

There will be a presentation on this topic at Wikimania (as mentioned in the phabricator task) where we hope do raise awareness for this issue, especially with the chapters. Best, Braveheart (talk) 14:29, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Braveheart, Thank you for the information! I will now have a look at it. Yes, I will be writing a grant request this year, I need this week to start communicating with the team to see who will else. I hope to work on that this week. I just returned from the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin, and their I made an inventory of which affiliates want to organise Wiki Loves Monuments this year. I think on the long term Wikidata can be interesting, but earlier this year I made an analysis of what is needed for that and I could only conclude that it is far from ready for usage.
I am concerned in general that there is from the grants team the request for a permanent team to have a sustainable future in the coming years, but I see no way to get such done. This I indicated also here: Grants talk:PEG/Wiki Loves Monuments international team/2015 coordination/Report. Romaine (talk) 00:58, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
Yes, that's also one of the main issues I want to talk about at Wikimania. For me, the solution would be for the chapters to provide support/people to support the planning and grant making process, since they are the ones that profit the most from this contest. There are certain chapters like NL and AT that are phasing out of WLM and new ones coming in, so having a core team of users involved would make the transition easier, while including chapters like WMDE who are far from done with WLM and won't be for the foreseeable future. WMDE would also be the most likely bet for funds to improve the technical infrastructure and the eventual move to Wikidata. We already have some developers at WMDE that are fairly knowledgable in WLM, so why not use that resource in the future?

Request for Input - New Central Notice request process[edit]

Hello fellow CN admin!

Back in February I emailed the CN-admin list regarding part of my role to look into the Central Notice process and see where we could make improvements including: the campaign process; its functionality or lack thereof; and fundamentally the documentation that supports it. You can see many of the issues that I identified at CentralNotice/Process_Review. If there is anything additional that you feel has been left out then please feel free to leave any comments on the talk page.

My first task is to improve the requesting of campaigns by communities and affiliates. I am looking to set up a more formal request process, similar to those used in many projects. The aim is to: increase the transparency of Central Notice; improve the support provided to affiliates (including making such support more consistent); to provide a forum for community input into campaigns.

I have been working on a very rough strawman version of the process and I would be interested in hearing you comments about what such a process should involve and what you think it would require. Please feel free to leave such comments at the process talk page section. I would like to have a working page in place by the end of May. This would not need to be a final version. The process can be improved upon over time as we learn about how well it works.

I encourage you to:

Regards

Participate in the Inspire Campaign and help address harassment![edit]

NounProject Leaves.png

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Themamaand (of schrijfmaand?) Azië[edit]

Hoi Romaine,

Doen Nederland en België geen van beide mee aan Wikipedia Asian Month ? Is er een reden dat ze daaraan niet (wensen) mee te doen? WCN wellicht in dezelfde maand?

Romaine (talk) 14:43, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Earth banner[edit]

Hi Romaine. If I get it right, the request for banner for WLE 2017 is still under review? If not, where can I list the proposed template for the notice on ro.wikipedia? PS: Please consider to {{ping}} me so that I can see the response from other wikis. --Gikü (talk) 07:52, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Gikü, I think it stays under review until campaign finishes. Do not worry about that, I organise the banners for years. On c:Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2017/CentralNotice local teams can add information about how it should be set up. Romaine (talk) 09:47, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Feedback Netherlands the World Exchange Platform requested[edit]

Hoi Romaine,

In the past, you've expressed an interest in the project The Netherlands and the World. As part of the project, the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform went online in April 2017. A few months later, we would now like to collect some feedback on the platform:

  • If you’ve signed up on the platform but never got around to using it, or if you looked at the platform but didn’t sign up, we would like to hear about that.
  • If you’ve never heard of the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform before, we would like to hear about that too.
  • In general, we are also interested to get feedback about the platform itself. So, whether you’ve already had a look at it, or just learned about it from this email, we would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to browse the website and share with us your thoughts on its purpose, the available functionality, the layout, things that you’re missing that should be there, suggestions, etc.

Feel free to share your thoughts on my talk page, your talk page, or email me directly if you don’t want to share your thoughts in public. Your feedback will be invaluable to help us decide how to move forward with the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform.

Thank you!

Regards, --AWossink (talk) 11:46, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
