ICD-11[edit]

The ICD 11 is coming out soon and the WHO is looking for Wikipedians to collaborate with further. I was there last summer meeting with the head of this division. We are working on the issue of copyright still. Would be great to have more volunteers involved with this. Doc James (talk ·contribs · email) 21:03, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The WHO's website says that ICD-11 is due by 2015. I am not sure if the project contact would want to wait for two more years to execute this idea. Should this proposal stand accepted, it would be best to start with ICD-10. --Netha Hussain (talk) 16:38, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, maybe I will join this project too, I'll look it right now. But it will be kind of hard to help without internet at home.EternamenteAprendiz (talk) 21:08, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Paying for internet / textbooks[edit]

We historically have not help editors pay for these. Agree textbooks are expensive and we have a Wikipedian who is helping editors get access to high quality sources User:Ocaasi. Google books is not a bad resource and one can get fairly large pieces of textbooks. Others are willing to help with review article access from time to time. We are working on putting together a medical textbook that will be offered free to all people in all languages here[1]. Writing for Wikipedia is a great way to learn ones profession. I think it would be best if you could collaborate with the library/museum of your University to gain access to resources, instead of buying them. I am not sure if such partnerships will work in your country, but I might be able to put you in touch with someone who is knowledgeable about this. This page about GLAM might help you to get started.--Netha Hussain (talk) 10:37, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I spent nearly all of medical school in the library as I was to poor to afford the textbooks.Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 12:02, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure I will be a lot more productive with my own internet. Depending of the university library and internet restricts my time and I'm used to produce more at night, when the library is closed. Also, sometimes all computers are busy or broken, the server slow down and stop working or the library goes on strike. I believe third world country have those problems a lot more often than first world ones.EternamenteAprendiz (talk) 21:05, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I already improved more than 100 ICD-10 articles with my own resources, is $100 to not slow my work for lack of internet really to much to ask?EternamenteAprendiz (talk) 21:24, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How long could you get internet for that price? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:31, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It depends of how many MB/s and the provider I choose. The one I use now costs $29,4 a months for 5MB/s internet. But since I'm moving, I will have to pay for a new modem too. I usually create/improve more than 10 pages about diseases per month. EternamenteAprendiz (talk) 19:09, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How about I mail you my old modem. You are in Brasil yes? Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:50, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I'm not sure the connectors we use are the same you use and the price for a new one will probably be cheaper than sending your but it may be better for the environment so...alright, but is it safe for me to provide my mail address over here? I'm impressed you wrote Brasil with S, have you ever lived here? I live in Brasília/DF.EternamenteAprendiz (talk) 07:04, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes used to live in Sao Paulo state. Do not post you address here but email it to me via wiki. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:36, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is that 29,40 in Brazilian reals or in US dollars? (Two R$ = one US$) WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:43, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is 29,40 reals, but that is a promotion, and it will get a lot more expensive without it. I expanded my proposition to 6 months, so now I'm asking for $16,6/month even if I'm sure the internet will cost more than this.EternamenteAprendiz (talk) 07:10, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So you're looking for about US$50/R$100. I wish I knew someone who could just send you the money by PayPal, and skip the question of whether this officially meets the grant requirements. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:23, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not eligible for a grant[edit]

Thanks for submitting this idea - the content you are creating for Wikipedia seems awesome! However, it does not meet the eligibility criteria for an Individual Engagement Grant project, because these grants cannot pay for someone to create content (write articles, upload photos, etc). I've marked the status as ineligible in its current state. Feel free to keep working on this draft and resubmit it at a later time if something changes with your overall project idea. And thanks again for participating and for improving Wikipedia! Siko (WMF) (talk) 17:05, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, but that is still not what these grants are for, sorry. I hope someone can figure out how to get you the access you need another way! Siko (WMF) (talk) 06:16, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes they are. It's for functional support implementing a project. Internet and books are functional support. As I said, I'm writing for free. What is wrong with asking for help when I'm really short on money. (do you want to see my credit card extract as proof?)EternamenteAprendiz (talk) 07:14, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
