The Philippine Panorama Project is an initiative of the Pilipinas Panorama Community which aims to collect media files of cultural heritage in every Philippine town for Wikimedia Commons, and eventually to be featured in its respective Wikipedia articles.

The Pilipinas Panorama Community aims to help towns (especially the less known) with no official website to have Wikipedia articles as alternative. The project commenced in 2023 and will gradually cover places until the objectives are completed.

Methodology

Photowalk >>> Wikimedia Commons >>> Wikidata >>> Wikipedia

Preparation Stage

  • Research: Know all about the Town/Area/Event via different sources of information
  • Check its Wikipedia page: Check what is still needed to improve the article. Also, note the sites (whether cultural heritage sites or not) where there is no photograph available in Wikimedia Commons or is in need of updating.
  • Route: Know on how to commute to the town/area. Plan also the path you will take for the photowalk

Photowalk Proper

  • Bring food, water, extra shirt, etc. for comfortability purposes
  • Given a limited time, a town's poblacion district or the town proper mostly provides the sites which are worthy of being included in the Wikipedia article of the town
  • Notable landmarks to visit are municipal/city hall, catholic churches, statues/monuments, public market, public parks, ancestral houses, shopping malls, rivers, view of a nearby mountain, hospital, universities/colleges, schools, government buildings, native foods, etc.
  • Gather useful information as possible in which for example are the data from historical markers. This can be used to improve the Wikipedia article.
  • Any camera will do including that of phones as long as the resulting image will be clear
  • The best times for photowalk are early morning, late afternoon, and evening to avoid the intensity of heat

Editing Stage

  • Suggested file name is "NAME OF SITE, TOWN, PROVINCE, MONTH, YEAR"
  • Upload the photographs to Wikimedia Commons and add its corresponding category (town-based) under the Philippine Panorama Project e.g. Category:Philippine Panorama Project/Baler, Aurora
  • Add the event to Template:Philippine Panorama Project/Photowalks and therefore to be featured at Philippine Panorama Project/Photowalks
  • Check whether a site you visited has already its Wikidata item. If not, create a one and fill-up statements and claims for the given item. You can also check similar Wikidata items to guide in filling up necessary details.
  • Check its English Wikipedia article again. Add photographs of sites which are not present in the article, and also update the old photos in the article.
  • Check also the articles of any cultural heritage sites. Add and update photographs also. Translate an article for a Philippine language Wikipedia project e.g. Tagalog and Bikol Wikipedia in case an article is not existing.
