This language has been verified as eligible. The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert. If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.A committee member provided the following comment: |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal
[edit]Launching a dedicated Malayalam Wikivoyage would open up high-quality, practical travel and geographical knowledge to over 38 million Malayalam speakers worldwide. Kerala, the primary home of Malayalam, is globally renowned for its unique tourism landscape. Wikivoyage’s content focus and structured guide formats provide the ideal environment for the community to document localized routes, budget travel strategies, and under-reported regional destinations. A standalone project will dramatically lower the barrier to entry for new editors into Wikimedia ecosystem.
Community Readiness and Sustainability
[edit]The Malayalam Wikimedia community has a proven track record of sustaining high-quality knowledge databases, evidenced by the longevity of Malayalam Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wikidata initiatives. To ensure the active, organic growth of the Wikivoyage incubator project, the community has established a robust framework of regular technical tracking and collaborative activities:
community actively utilizes a custom localized dashboard Inkpen Tool to closely monitor missing translations, article completion rates, dynamic metrics, and systemic gaps across test pages.
The project is backed by steady, organized monthly technical and editing sprints by Wikimedians of Kerala User Group. This helps keeping momentum and ensuring continuous collaboration.

Discussion
[edit]
Oppose 30 million speakers, mostly concentrated in India. Not really useful for travel, and also given that English rates in India are high as well. SHB2000 (talk | contibs) 02:03, 22 September 2021 (UTC)- Support The reason I provided in the Tamil one also applies here. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:48, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
Support Well-manageable and of the taste of Malayalam community. Malayalis migrates outside at a larger proportion, and travel & tourism have always been a trend. Many Malayalam language travel magazines, documentaries, etc. are popular in Kerala. Even a travel channel in Malayalam "Safari TV" was well received by the community with great interest. Support Dear Members of the Language Committee / Wikivoyage Community, I am writing to formally express my strong support for the approval and creation of a dedicated Malayalam language Wikivoyage subdomain. As the project continues to develop steadily within the Wikimedia Incubator (Wy/ml), it is clear that a standalone platform is the logical next step to sustain and accelerate this growth. There are several compelling reasons why a dedicated Malayalam Wikivoyage is both viable and highly necessary:
- A Vast Global Diaspora: The Malayalam-speaking community is uniquely global. Beyond the millions of native speakers in Kerala, India, there is a massive, highly mobile diaspora spread across the Middle East (GCC countries), Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. This global footprint means there is an inherent, organic interest in travel, transit, and cross-border exploration within the community.
- A Highly Active, Existing Community: The Malayalam Wikimedia community already boasts a stellar track record of managing robust, high-quality projects, including Wikipedia, Wikisource, and active regional user groups (such as the Wikimedians of Kerala). We possess a mature contributor base that understands wiki culture, formatting standards, and quality control.
- Rich Content Potential: Kerala is one of the world's premier travel destinations, known globally for its unique cultural heritage, diverse geography, and tourism infrastructure. A dedicated Malayalam Wikivoyage will allow native speakers and travelers to document both local micro-destinations and international travel experiences in their own language, filling a crucial gap in free travel knowledge.
- Sustained Growth in the Incubator: Over the past few months, we have seen consistent efforts to enrich the incubator project, build templates, translate key travel infrastructure, and recruit passionate new contributors. Transitioning out of the Incubator into a live subdomain will dramatically increase visibility, making it easier to onboard casual editors and travelers.
An independent subdomain will serve as a powerful catalyst, transforming the current test project into a thriving, definitive travel guide for Malayalam speakers worldwide. I eagerly look forward to seeing this project approved. Thank you for your time, consideration, and continued support of free knowledge.
- A Vast Global Diaspora: The Malayalam-speaking community is uniquely global. Beyond the millions of native speakers in Kerala, India, there is a massive, highly mobile diaspora spread across the Middle East (GCC countries), Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. Support I am an active editor in this project and trying to make it better as much as I can by my small contributions. I strongly support for moving this project out of the incubator to serve as a strong community driven initiative for both travellers and enthusiasts who wish to know more about kerala and also explore it because travel was always been the most important factor that shaped the socio-political-economic landscape of Kerala, considering its ancient maritime relations with other civilisations, the long history of malayalees both from the past and present of travelling around the world which established a strong malayalee diaspora. --Adarshjchandran (talk) 09:31, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
Support I am an active editor in this project.I strongly support for moving this project out of the incubator.--Atheenasiji (talk) 17:27, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
Support I strongly support moving the Malayalam Wikivoyage out of the Incubator, as the community has built a solid foundation with active contributors and useful travel content for Malayalam readers. Launching Malayalam Wikivoyage as an independent project will greatly help native speakers access reliable travel information in their own language and encourage wider participation from the Malayalam community.--SijiR (talk) 17:05, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
Support As a contributor to the Malayalam Wikivoyage project in the Incubator, I support the creation of a dedicated Malayalam subdomain. Our active community has worked diligently to build a high-quality repository of travel guides, and establishing an independent project is the crucial next step to boost our visibility, attract new editors, and streamline content creation. We have met the necessary localisation standards, and our core group of volunteers is fully committed to the long-term maintenance, growth, and moderation of the platform. Moving out of the Incubator will significantly empower Malayalam speakers worldwide by making travel information universally accessible in our native language. Sumithrasree (talk)
Support I am extremely happy to support this proposal as I have also been a contributor to Malayalam language Wikivoyage, inspired by my brother, also a Wikimedian. Being a native speaker of the language, but currently a resident of the United Arab Emirates, I completely understand the value of the Malayalam Wikivoyage that would help a lot of diaspora settled abroad, away from home, eager and enthused to travel often for which this tool comes in handy, in their own language. I fully support this proposal and shall continue my active participation as a regular contributor ever since I started editing. Sangarj1712 (talk)
