I request CheckUser status on en.wikisource:

Thank You. Pikminlover 16:19, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Per policy, the check user rights cannot be given to a single user on a project. The community of en.wikisource is asked to select at least two users whom give check user rights to.
Besides, you should provide a link to the page in which the community of en.wikisource explicitly expressed support to you as check user (by a poll or a vote). Thank you. --Paginazero - Ø 17:05, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Tangotango

I request sysop access on simple.wikipedia:

My Request for adminship has been going on for nearly three weeks now, and the community have given me 13 unanimous votes in favour of sysopping me. However, the local bureaucrat, simple:User:Netoholic, has not responded to an email I sent last week asking him to sysop me.

Thank you. Tangotango 16:27, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Done --Paginazero - Ø 16:29, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

The statement above that I have not responded to email was inaccurate. I am active on the wiki on a daily basis. There are concerns related to this promotion, so please let this be handled on-wiki, and remove sysop access for Tangotango for the time being. Just because someone implies a bureaucrat is inactive, does not make it so, and we have two bureaucrats on Simple. -- Netoholic @ 16:43, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

I've been called in chat for stopping a vandal at work on simple. I granted temporary sysop access to M7 for that. Once done, Tangotango asked me advice for his long pending request. I told him to leave a request here explaining the situation and, once done, I took care of it.
Whatever the concerns to granting him sysop access are, I could not find them on the local request page, where they're expected to be publicly reported. --Paginazero - Ø 17:10, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
And they will be, I not think that Tango would have come here and misrepresented the situation. In any case, Simple has two bureaucrats (one of which is very active) and there should not have been a meta-promotion if that had been verified. "Whatever the concerns to granting him sysop access are, I could not find them on the local request page" is correct - and that also applies to whatever "concerns" were raised in your IRC conversation. Thanks for your help with the vandalism, but please reverse this. -- Netoholic @ 17:20, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
Out of the two bureacrats, one is absent since December 2005 ([3]), so you are the only active bureaucrat on simple.wiki.
I'm removing Tangotango's sysop flag, but I expect you to activate it as soon as possible, since he has the support of the local community - or - you to motivate publicly the reasons that prevent you to do that.
If in a week the situation won't be changed one way or another, I'll set Tangotango's sysop flag back on. --Paginazero - Ø 17:32, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
May I add to this thread that other users have expressed, motivated and signed severe comments about your actions on simple.wikipedia. I've also written my humble opinion and I've explicitly asked in your talk page in simple.wikipedia to give your view about all those matters. I'm afraid that 8 (eight) days have passed since my request. --M/ 17:41, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello. Actually, I was just expressing my support for user Jondel and was not intending to vote (as this is just a request page). Our Wikipedia, like a newborn baby, has a tiny community (21 users as of yet) and only a small percentage of it are active as some are merely bots. We cannot do a request page and solicit opinions because of this. Thanks. --Weekeejames 20:07, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

French Wikipedia

User:Yann has removed my adminship on French Wikipedia with=out any request here on my own, see Special:Log/rights. I ask for the immediate return of my rights and for the removal of the steward rights for this abusive steward. I made a private request in a mail to Anthere (as steward and chairman of the board of trustees of WMF), who has to decide if she has to remove my rights after the problems on FR wiki. Hégésippe | ±Θ± 12:51, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

It seems to me that this request is pretty clear. guillom 13:00, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, I find it rather strange/awkard, too.
to require his adminship removal, reverting every block/page protection he did lately on a whim, etc... and then requesting destitution of the "abusive" steward that access the removal request... -__-;
Seriously, what the heck ? Please get ahold of yourself. I'm not against the re-give of the sysop right, but all this is clearly going haywire.
DarkoNeko 13:09, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
You don't choose which steward will desysop you. They don't have to make any choice, they only process requests from local community or from users who ask their removal of access. That's precisely what you did. guillom 15:05, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Desysoping and debuerocrating at the sh: Wikpedia

I hereby request that admin and bureaucrat status on sh-wiki be revoked from the following inactive users: Bonzo, Ђорђе Д. Божовић, and Јованвб. Reason is over 10 months of inacrivity. Whit me, there are three more admins who are active. We stil do not have policy for automatic desysoping on Meta, but acording to their long time inactivity, I thing that only active users can have this status at this moment. Regards, --Pokrajac 23:29, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Has this decision already been discussed by sh.wiki community? Can you please link a discussion/vote page where the will of the community is clearly reported? --Paginazero - Ø 08:25, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
There has been discussion on local page [7]. All three active users said there is no need for revoking, but if revoking is usual for inactive users they don't have anything against my request. So, I think you should decide what is the best for them. --Pokrajac 12:42, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
There is no usual common behaviour for inactive sysops. Every wiki-community is free to decide how to handle their cases. Some wikipedias have an automatic revoking, others not, others make polls ad personam.
The decision is not up to the stewards, it's the community of sh.wiki that decides what to do and then comes here to request the application of the decision. Since the three users said there is no need for revoking, I'd leave the situation unchanged for the moment. Bye. --Paginazero - Ø 15:14, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Simple.wiki counts actually 14 sysops and 2 bureaucrats. English is spoken worldwide, therefore I might assume that most of the timezones are covered. Nevertheless (I might be wrong) such calls for emergency access look to me rather frequent. It sounds like simple.wiki needs more active sysops/buros; if it does, this is something the local community has to deal with in order to be able to handle the emergencies timely. --Paginazero - Ø 09:34, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Commons request for a delinker tool running in every wiki

Since any of the currently 701 Wikimedia Foundation wikis can link to Wikimedia Commons, Commons contributors and administrators need to take care upon modifying or deleting files. Up to now, MediaWiki only provides the embedding of files, and not the necessary bidirectional cross project maintenance assistance. In order to overcome these severe technical flaws - each one challenging the Wikimedia Commons project as a whole - passionate "Commonists" simply wrote the missing tools themselves. One essential tool is a file delinker bot that needs to run in every Wikimedia wiki and it is unreasonable to await approval by 701 different Wikimedia wiki communities. They all use Wikimedia Commons and Wikimedia Commons now needs to efficiently interact with them in return:

That for the administrators of Wikimedia Commons request to be exempt from local bot policies in order to run this bot.

Please read the full request with detailed information at Requests for permissions/CommonsDelinker and comment there (merged below).

Since any of the current 701 Wikimedia Foundation wikis can link to Wikimedia Commons, Commons contributors and administrators need to take care when modifying or deleting files. Thus far MediaWiki only provided the file embedding, and not the necessary bidirectional cross project maintenance assistance. To overcome these severe technical flaws - each one challenging the whole Wikimedia Commons project - passionate "Commonists" simply proceeded to write the missing tools themselves. One essential tool is a file delinker bot which must run in each Wikimedia wiki, as it is unreasonable to await deletion approval from 701 different Wikimedia wiki communities. All the communities use Wikimedia Commons and Wikimedia Commons must efficiently interact with all of them in return.

Technical background

We Commons people try to overcome the severe technical flaws primarily with these three tools:

  1. CheckUsage - before its introduction it was impossible to determine even the effect of an action (like Commons deletion) on other wikis.
  2. CommonsTicker - before its introduction local communities simply had no chance of being alerted on regular basis about changes, deletion requests or deletions which required their attention and feedback.
  3. CommonsDelinker - it is unreasonable for Commons admins to delink every local file usage of every project manually after a copyvio media file deletion.

The first two tools have greatly enhanced transparency and bidirectional integration but the missing cornerstone and safety net was the CommonsDelinker. Delinking is the process of exhaustively editing every local page containing a file, in order to exclude each instance of that file. To manually execute this task will be dauntingly tedious, if you are lucky to even enlist the volunteers, since:

  • the job can as yet only be done anonymously (no communication), as the unified login, creation and managing account for each of 701 Wikimedia wikis that use Commons, is still lacking, meaning that the task is physically impossible.
  • you get confronted with languages where you cannot even guess what they display and which contain (interface) styles which you simply have no clue about. A fast switch between RTL and LTR wikis is especially a nightmare, as you have to use the MediaWiki interface blindly.
  • manual operation consumes most of the total deletion job time: Manual delinking slows the entire deletion process by a factor of ca. 10 - 100. This slowdown has created a huge backlog of clear Commons copyvios that need to be deleted ASAP.
  • it is a repetitive manual procedure with no creativity and which no one really appreciates as its huge extent is invisible to most.

This results in skipped delinking (you in some way need to keep up with new copyvios coming into Commons), user errors (when you are unfamiliar with a certain wiki) and communication problems (since you edit anonymously). Thus, it is ideal that this task be carried out by a bot.

Scope of the bot

The CommonsDelinker is only the second step, after CommonsTicker executed, and implements after the standard reaction time of local wikis to ticker messages. So CommonsTicker enables local communities to act in advance of most deletions (with the exception of those as yet untagged and blatant copyvios, where the admin may preventively delete on sight) as CommonsTicker already notifies local wikis as soon as a deletion request is added to an offending file. Delinking in reaction to CommonsTicker is the preferred delinking method as it enables both removal and manual file replacement with an equivalent free file. Wikimedia Commons can however not wait longer than the standard Commons deletion timeframe for communities to react to CommonsTicker messages, as it would be impossible to wait for confirmation from 701 wikis.

The bot will be an integral part of reducing the dangerous copyvio deletion backlog in Wikimedia Commons and will free Commons admins from the manual delinking slave job. Thus, forthwith there will be fewer missing files (red links) in articles and admins will be able to focus on the file criteria only and therefor increase the quality of the Wikimedia Commons repository for all projects.

Please see CommonsDelinker for exact details on how it will work.

The call to the Foundation

A bot capable of doing this has been created, but at a test phase it was forced out of action by the administrators of various local wikis who claimed that the bot was an inconvenience since it did not have local bot status and/or did not adhere to local bot policies[1].

The administrators of Wikimedia Commons request to be exempt from local bot policies in order to run this bot.

  • All communities that don't want that bot will need to do every file delinking by themselves, either using CommonsTicker only or entirely homebrew solutions. Wikimedia Commons admins will not alternatively do manual delinking in wikis that don't want the CommonsDelinker.
  • The bot will remain active in all wikis that do not specifically and as a community oppose to it. Nonetheless, they may decide to turn off the bot after an internal debate.
  • The CommonsDelinker bot does not necessarily need the bot flag in every wiki. Each wiki can decide by itself if they give that bot a bot flag. Wikimedia Commons people however neither have the time nor the language skills to follow these bot status approvals in each of the 700+ wikis. However, the question of pending local bot status shall not disrupt the bots action.

It's important to bear in mind that Commons is providing this service to the local wikis in order to prevent redlinking of images at the local level. There are some pages on many of the less active wikis that have a great number of redlinked images. CommonsDelinker will create more equality among smaller and larger Wikimedia wikis.

Support. As a member of the english wikipedia bot approvals group, I have no objections to this kind of blanket approval. That said, the bot should follow the standard practice: Not contributing anonymously and having the name "Bot" in the user name. This will prevent the blocking of such bots, since they can be identified. As for approval of the task specifically, if it is determined outside the scope of the english Wikipedia that such a bot is acceptable, then it does not need any additional approval from us, as far as I'm concerned. It would be nice if a simple post to a bot talk page could let us know what the bot is doing. Update: Since apparently this is going to run annonymously, that's a bummer. But if there is no way around this, oh well. Ram-Man 02:51, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Note that, as I understand it, anon editing is a part of the proposal, at least for many wikis... 701 different userid password combos to seek, secure, and maintain is a lot. Maybe under unified userid it could be changed? Lar 01:12, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Unified login would solve this problem, but it isn't ready. I want to officially state that the importance of this bot overrides that of my concerns about cluttering recent changes if run annonymously, but I'd also like to have my cake and eat it too, if possible. Ram-Man 13:37, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
I'd seriously talk to the devs about this; they recently let a bot run with admin status on all wikis to fix a few MediaWiki messages, I think. I see no reason why the same thing couldn't be done here. Ral315 (talk) 20:40, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

That would be up to the administrators at Wikinews. They're the ones that protect the pages and assign new administrators. Similarly, since they are the ones that protected the page, they should pay close attention to CommonsTicker--otherwise they're going to get lots of red links and have no one to blame but themselves.--Orgullomoore 05:17, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
I don't like the implication that it is the fault of Wikinews administrators that we end up with redlinks. We protect everything in main and category namespace that has a date on it older than 10 days. Were we to adopt strict intepretation of our policy of using information available at the time the article is written then some of the commons substitutions would be unacceptable to us.
If, as the consensus seems to be, this bot goes into operation it will either have to deal with problems before they get protected, or go through what I suspect will not be a smooth RfA on Wikinews. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:10, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

This will likely need a bot flag on en: as well (also requiring logged-in status). I was unable to locate the trials section alluded to earlier, can you please place a direct link. Hmm...why didn't Brion make that comment, and not Tito? In any case, we've been waiting for the universal login for this very project at least since April 2006. And it's been "coming soon" for quite a while now. 1.) What's up? and 2.) What's wrong with the plan on which we've been hard at work for the las few days (this one)? --Orgullomoore 04:26, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Support Support very strongly. I've accumulated several logins on languages I don't speak just for the task of delinking images which needed deleting. It's a painful and thankless job for a human and is well suited to a bot. Based on my experience with running OrphanBot on Enwiki, as long as you keep things simple ([[Image:Example.jpg]] and [[Image:Example.jpg|with|a|few|parameters]]), the bot will make almost no mistakes, the only exception being places where people misuse images, such as putting fictional currency symbols inline in text. --65.101.119.25 23:14, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
