People’s name localisation[edit]

Hello, In your languages, can the names of people require to be localised? I mean we should choose between these both following options:

  1. we should always put people’s name inside TVAR to avoid misspelling.
  2. or we should always allow translators to localize people’s name.

For example: is it useful to have all staff names marked for translation inside Template:WMF Staff? —Pols12 (talk) 15:58, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

I think it is useful to give languages the opportunity to transcribe names (or de-transcribe them, if they had been transcribed into the Latin script from the local script of the wiki). /Julle (talk) (in his volunteer capacity) 12:42, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer! I think you’re right, I have indeed seen name transcriptions into Arabic. So option 2: we probably should always allow translator to localize people’s name. --Pols12 (talk) 15:22, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Enabling the new language bci[edit]

Hello !

I would like to enable the bci language in the Meta Wiki Translations. It is a new language that doesn't appear again. I want to translate from english or french toward bci which is still in the incubator, and I am working on: It is a part of a Ph.D. program for Machine Translation tasks, more details here : Any hint about the general correct procedure is welcome.

Awaiting for your feedback please.

Regards, Jean-Claude KOUASSI.

Hello Kjeanclaude,
You can request for adding of a new language to MediaWiki on support.
Besides, if you only aims to test your program, you should probably work on your own mirror: you can freely download and edit all Wikimedia wiki content.
Plus, you can visit main Research page; mainly if you still need to work on public Wikimedia cluster, you would be allowed by WMF or community.
Lastly, please end your messages with four tildes ~~~~ to sign them. Helping button: --Pols12 (talk) 16:25, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Unable to mark Template:CIS-A2K Train-a-Wikipedian header for translation even as translation admin?[edit]

Hello, for some reason I am unable to mark Template:CIS-A2K Train-a-Wikipedian header for translation (syntax updated) even as a translation admin. Could someone please take a look at this and see if you can? Thanks! --TheSandDoctor Talk 04:54, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Probably because the <translate> tags were removed at [1]. --MF-W 16:28, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
I’m working on that template. --Pols12 (talk) 16:19, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Yes check.svg Done --Pols12 (talk) 16:45, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
@Pols12: Thanks! --TheSandDoctor Talk 16:51, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Language template help[edit]

Hi, this is probably not the right place to ask, but I couldn't figure out where to ask. I need to create Template:smn for the Inari Saami language and Template:Sms for the Skolt Saami language, but these are currently being used by non-language templates. Any ideas about how to proceed? -Yupik (talk) 06:03, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Yupik, I have not understood what you want to do. {smn} and {sms} can be used on a page in any language, I think. If you meet an issue with these templates, please give a link to the problematic page. --Pols12 (talk) 22:41, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
The language code for the Inari Saami language is smn, the language code for Skolt Saami, sms. Template:smn and Template:sms do not refer to the language code like Template:Se does for Northern Saami (se). I want to be able to create a template for those two languages that works the same as the one for Northern Saami. -Yupik (talk) 23:30, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the clarification. Two possibilities:
  • You create your templates with another name, e.g. {smn-lang}. These language-code templates don’t seem to be standardized on Meta (many languages have no templates, and depending on the templates, the language code, the language name in English or the language name in target language is displayed).
  • Or you can rename current Template:Smn and Template:Sms and ask a bot to fix all pages which include them. Then you will be able to use the old names for your language templates.
I think the first solution is simpler and less noisy. --Pols12 (talk) 15:09, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

ItWikiCon pages[edit]

Could any of you use Special:PageLanguage to set Italian as base language for all pages under ItWikiCon/2020, because it's an Italian conference. Could you also help me with this: ItWikiCon/2020/Sede and other subpages of ItWikiCon/2020? Thank you very much.--Ferdi2005[Mail] 22:06, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
