non-FLOSS but Freeware

why is this limited to open source software? there's plenty of free yet not open source software that would be useful for non-profit organisations. Kate

@Kate: freeware software is often malicious, restrictive and does not let the user control the software or respect their freedom/privacy. It is important for wikimedia to use and promote free software -- libre not gratis.

ownCloud

phpList

Does someone use phpList? WMIT uses MailChimp for some things, but I don't know why (probably just out of an emergency). --Nemo 05:39, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Wikimedia Foundation contact

Can we please find someone from WMF who can take care of maintaining this list? Some WMF people seem to ignore the existence of this page, and others actively refuse to use it. Nemo 08:45, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Nemo, does this page need to be maintained by the WMF? What is its problem in its current status? Note that I'm not sure we are keeping mw:Upstream projects up to date, which is a very similar type of effort, and the responsibility of the WMF there is more direct because most of the entries are used or developed within WMF-lead software projects.--Qgil-WMF (talk) 08:59, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Sure, the WMF Office IT team can help keep this page up to date, but no one is a fully authoritative/definitive source for this information -- IMO like any wiki It can be edited/managed by anyone and doesn't need an official contact. Software choice is largely up to individuals. If one persons wants to use Atom as a text editor, does that mean it MUST be included here? I think this document is helpful for anyone wanting to learn more about tools and software choices, but 'Software' is a pretty wide category. JKrauska (WMF) (talk) 19:37, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

What's the Scope?

Software is a pretty broad category. There are 20+ software/systems in use by the Ops team and well documented in puppet/wikitech that aren't listed here. There are hundreds of personal desktops where people are basically free to choose any software they want to get their job done. There are few mandates about software/tool use. (engineers don't like tool mandates) If I write a python script to parse my email/inbox, do I need to include Python in this list? If I play some music using rdio and a personal account, do I need to include it here? This page in general is an ambitious and fascinating attempt -- would love some discussion on scope.. Best. Non-profit organisation is redundant

Many section begin with 'About:', and they all say 'non-profit organisation' (in various ways), which isnt surprising because that is a requirement of being a chapter organisation, and probably also any incorporated affiliate. (I can't help thinking that such warnings would be less necessary if Gmail didn't hide common headers from view in their standard composer, such as the full email addresses of recipients...)
