non-FLOSS but Freeware[edit]

why is this limited to open source software? there's plenty of free yet not open source software that would be useful for non-profit organisations. Kate

@Kate: freeware software is often malicious, restrictive and does not let the user control the software or respect their freedom/privacy. It is important for wikimedia to use and promote free software -- libre not gratis.

Ubuntu wording[edit]

Hm, my edit incorrectly linked to W:Ubuntu (operating system) when I pulled the wording from W:Ubuntu. Sorry! --MarkTraceur (talk) 20:05, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ownCloud[edit]

Is anyone using ownCloud, e.g. for internal file sharing? It's quite neat, no idea how easy to administer or how easy for newbies to use. --Nemo 13:11, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Italia is looking for a hosted ownCloud instance right now; we have asked known providers and our own web hosters. Nemo 09:09, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
WN-Reporters is using NextCloud, which is a fork of ownCloud.

phpList[edit]

Does someone use phpList? WMIT uses MailChimp for some things, but I don't know why (probably just out of an emergency). --Nemo 05:39, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We are now using phplist.com hosted and we're very happy with the results and support. Nemo 07:52, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Foundation contact[edit]

Can we please find someone from WMF who can take care of maintaining this list? Some WMF people seem to ignore the existence of this page, and others actively refuse to use it. Nemo 08:45, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nemo, does this page need to be maintained by the WMF? What is its problem in its current status? Note that I'm not sure we are keeping mw:Upstream projects up to date, which is a very similar type of effort, and the responsibility of the WMF there is more direct because most of the entries are used or developed within WMF-lead software projects.--Qgil-WMF (talk) 08:59, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I only mean the WMF section of this list. Yes, it would be nice if WMF didn't keep secret what software it is using. Since Erik left, the information on software used by WMF is based on hearsay and voce dal sen fuggita. Nemo 09:07, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, now I understand. As far as I'm aware, this is not about actively keeping secret anything, but being aware of this problem and finding someone to become the new contact. I have asked to our Office IT team. Thank you for the heads-up.--Qgil-WMF (talk) 15:11, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, the WMF Office IT team can help keep this page up to date, but no one is a fully authoritative/definitive source for this information -- IMO like any wiki It can be edited/managed by anyone and doesn't need an official contact. Software choice is largely up to individuals. If one persons wants to use Atom as a text editor, does that mean it MUST be included here? I think this document is helpful for anyone wanting to learn more about tools and software choices, but 'Software' is a pretty wide category. JKrauska (WMF) (talk) 19:37, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What's the Scope?[edit]

Software is a pretty broad category. There are 20+ software/systems in use by the Ops team and well documented in puppet/wikitech that aren't listed here. There are hundreds of personal desktops where people are basically free to choose any software they want to get their job done. There are few mandates about software/tool use. (engineers don't like tool mandates) If I write a python script to parse my email/inbox, do I need to include Python in this list? If I play some music using rdio and a personal account, do I need to include it here? This page in general is an ambitious and fascinating attempt -- would love some discussion on scope.. Best. JKrauska (WMF) (talk) 20:17, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just added any software we use. It includes software that is used by staff and by OIT. What software would others like to see on this list? Do these fit the page? (BBogaert (WMF)), 12 November 2015)

Non-profit organisation is redundant[edit]

Many section begin with 'About:', and they all say 'non-profit organisation' (in various ways), which isnt surprising because that is a requirement of being a chapter organisation, and probably also any incorporated affiliate. Can we remove that from each section, as redundant information? John Vandenberg (talk) 00:19, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

G Suite[edit]

Given https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2017/05/early-detection-of-phishing-via-delayed-delivery.html I'm curious if now WMF employees receive a warning when they email somebody without a @wikimedia.org address, such as volunteers. (I can't help thinking that such warnings would be less necessary if Gmail didn't hide common headers from view in their standard composer, such as the full email addresses of recipients...) Nemo 07:51, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think I do. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 09:43, 23 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mailchimp[edit]

Ugh, I see the Mailchimp virus is quickly expanding. Now there's a Mailchimp newsletter for everything, it seems, and who knows how to find them. Nemo 06:48, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

LOOMIO.org[edit]

I see there was a confirmed use of Loomio inside of WMF. Is/Was LOOMIO.org in use or self-hosted instance in WMF infrastructure? Thank you! Zblace (talk) 12:35, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
