Additional search engines[edit]

The Interwiki map currently contains a link to Google. In the interest of minimizing the appearance that Wikimedia supports one general search engine in preference to others and to provide options for cases when one search engine is less useful than others, requesting the addition of two other large general search engines: Bing: which would link to http://www.bing.com/search?q=$1 and Yahoo: which would link to http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=$1. Please see en:Template talk:Db-meta#Recent change causing problems for anons and en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Forced to enter a captcha each time I tag something for speedy deletion for additional reasoning behind this request. --Allen3 talk 11:08, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Any chance of some progress on this? Thanks. -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:08, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
A few people have (previously) suggested removing "google:", not adding further search engines. I'm largely indifferent on the matter.
Regarding the specific issue, I wrote a little tool at some point that passes parameters through to Google search, Google Books, etc. through the tools: (for Toolserver) prefix. It's called redirector or something. It doesn't currently support Bing or Yahoo!, but I guess it could. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:47, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
A few technical details regarding the hack I previously implemented are available here: w:User talk:MZMcBride/Archive 27#Tool Questions. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:52, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
