Offline UG[edit]

Hello

Would not you consider that instead of creating a brand new usergroup, you might join an already existing one ; the wikimedian for Offline wikis UserGroup.

That UG has been approved 5 years ago. It has wiki pages (though many outdated to be fair), a mailing list, a telegram channel, a logo... 5 years of activity report.
Its structure is very loose, so you would very likely fit in without problem. Kiwix and Edu projects are already included in that group. See for example in the last report : Offline Projects/Reports/June 2023#OFWA Kiwix4schools

A qurstion for 787IYO and Galdiz! Is the group focusing on Kiwix use in Nigeria or globally? –SJ talk  17:30, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Actually it is not focusing on Nigeria only but rather in areas especially the African countries where network instability is prone. We intend to liased and guide many Wikimedians especially through regions User groups on kiwix usage for educational purposes and lot more 787IYO (talk) 08:32, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm amazed and very supportive to see Kiwix technology to be adopted, promoted and appropriated by people in Nigeria. Leading a software development effort at Kiwix, this is a very grateful rewarding for us. I would like to see users, power users and affiliated organisations more present in the Wikimedia offline community. That said, I can only support the proposal and question from Anthere and Sj. Without having a strong opinion on the creation of this new user group, there is indeed a few points which should at least be clarified:
  • Why the the UG offline does not match your needs?
  • Kiwix been a protected trademark, does the needed verification have been made?

Both Affcom and the UG have reached out and we have clarified that as long as any activity uses the User Group moniker (ie never using "Kiwix" alone or pretending to represent Kiwix), we're good. The other Kiwix guy (talk) 10:35, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Certainly, we are part of the "Offline Wikimedians User group", While both groups share a common goal of promoting offline access to Wikimedia content, there are specific reasons for the establishment of the "Kiwix Wikimedians User Group":
1. Kiwix Focus: The "Kiwix Wikimedians User Group" is primarily centered around Kiwix, an offline Wikipedia browser. This focus allows us to delve deeply into promoting Kiwix and its utilization for knowledge access in regions with limited internet connectivity (African regions according to statistical views suffers a lot in this regard). The Offline Wikimedians duel most in creating, developing offline models not only kiwix while the "Kiwix Wikimedians User group" duel only on kiwix and nothing apart from kiwix.
2. Distinct Identity: By having a dedicated Kiwix-focused user group, we can maintain a distinct identity and branding that highlights the importance of Kiwix as a key tool in offline knowledge access. This helps prevent potential confusion between our user group's mission and that of the Offline Wikimedians User Group.
3. Specialized Expertise: Members of the Kiwix Wikimedians User Group may have specialized expertise in Kiwix-related matters, such as technical aspects, content curation, and community engagement. This specialized knowledge can be effectively harnessed within our user group to advance the mission.
4. Flexibility: Having a separate user group allows us the flexibility to tailor our activities, initiatives, and collaborations specifically to the needs and goals related to Kiwix and offline Wikipedia access predominantly in regions with network issues.
While we acknowledge the valuable work of the Offline Wikimedians User Group in the broader context of offline access to Wikimedia content, the creation of the Kiwix Wikimedians User Group enables a more targeted and specialized approach to advancing the mission of Kiwix, which we believe will ultimately benefit the broader Wikimedia community and those in need of offline access to knowledge. Thanks for the questions 787IYO (talk) 08:38, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
