Userviews Analysis lists only a part of the pages

I tried to get the "Userviews Analysis" for de.wp, user "Frank C. Müller" (me) and the time from 2015-07-01 to 2015-09-29 ([1]). The result lists only 100 pages and at least not one of the most visited ones ("Liste der Schraubenkopfantriebe") with over 39,000 page views.

Got anyone any idea?

gruß, fcm. --Frank C. Müller (talk) 15:04, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

@Frank C. Müller: Looks like that article wasn't created until 19 January 2016 so there is no data for the requested date range (2015-07-01 to 2015-09-29). I can try to improve the error message to say the article did not exist at that time. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:35, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi MusikAnimal! Thanks! I didn't realize the actual timerange. Obviously I am not able to use adequately your dialog-box to set the time-range. And when I copy the URL with the option "range=all-time", the resulting and calculated time range is always "2015-07-01 - 2015-09-29". gruß, fcm. --Frank C. Müller (talk)
@Frank C. Müller: Fixed! Sorry about that. You should now be able to use the "range=all-time" and get all available data: [2]. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 16:07, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi MusikAnimal! Thanks a lot! Now it seems to work. gruß, fcm. --Frank C. Müller (talk) 16:29, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Monthly or daily average

Hi. When checking the views for an article in the last 12 months, top right hand says "Paginaweergaven" (Dutch), below that: "Monthly average", the only English words in that part (except for autoconfirmed). The figure is, however, a daily average, not a monthly one. This is the case when checking 1 article only. When I check multiple articles the figure is a monthly average. It's the same for en.wikipedia.org, also just when checking a single page name. Thanks, Sander1453 (talk) 09:21, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Fixed, thank you! This behaviour may change soon. We'll probably always show daily averages, perhaps in addition to monthly averages. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 12:58, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Userviews Analysis "Only include redirects"

Resolved.

It keeps showing only non-redirects. It says "Loading from cache..." while loading. Brightgalrs (talk) 13:23, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

@Brightgalrs: Sorry for the late reply. I tried querying for you with the "Only include redirects" option set, and it worked. What browser and operating system are you using? Does it work if you try it in incognito mode (or a different browser)? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:43, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF):, Chrome/Windows 10 and Chromium/Linux Mint. Incognito on Chromium doesn't work. I just tried Firefox/Linux Mint. The same thing happens. "Jimbo Wales" with "Only include redirects" shows en:M16 rifle (a non-redirect) at the top. Brightgalrs (talk) 00:20, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
@Brightgalrs: Sorry two times in a row! I misunderstood you. Indeed that functionality was broken, but broken no more :) [3] Thanks for the report MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 05:06, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
Awesome. I've been interested in how good my judgement is when it comes to making redirects. Brightgalrs (talk) 05:21, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Why isn't "bot" listed in the Agent drop-down?

bot seems to be a valid value for the agent parameter as described here: https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/url_structure/ and here: https://tools.wmflabs.org/siteviews/faq/#agents — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 171.65.82.6 (talk)

Good catch! Bot data is not available for aggregate (per-project) statistics. I have clarified the URL documentation and FAQ. Thanks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:38, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Massviews: is there a way to include sub-categories?

Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T149334 resolved

For example, if selecting en:Category:People from Codington County, South Dakota, is there a way to have it also list all articles in the sub-category en:Category:People from Watertown, South Dakota? (Watertown is in Codington County) --Bp0 (talk) 18:04, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

@Bp0: This is next on the list! You can follow phab:T149334 for updates. Hopefully I'll have something out in the coming weeks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:40, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
@Bp0: This feature has been added. Let me know if you have any issue. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:07, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

It seems to be working. Thanks! --Bp0 (talk) 21:56, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

"bot" agent always returns zero

Is "bot" a valid agent limit? I don't see it return any data for popular pages: https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=bot&start=2016-05-01&end=2017-04-30&pages=Albert_Einstein%7CEarth

It is a valid agent according to the API, but indeed it is odd nothing shows up, at least when I spot checked several other popular pages. I believe they are supposed to be self-reported bots, as opposed to search engines crawlers (also known as "spiders"), but perhaps it is all bundled under "spider" now. I will ask the Analytics team about it. Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:44, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Modifying Massview Queries & limiting by namespace

Hey! Love the tool, noticed that I can't really go back with the fields that I have filled in a Massview query such as this, and tweak the variables on the last page, without having to fill it out all over again (say I want to switch wikis or I had a typo in the url I was using, etc). Also, would love to be able to limit the results by name space. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 14:59, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

All great ideas! I've created phab:T166178 and phab:T166176. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:57, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Unexplained spike in views, that lasted 3 to 4 months

See en:Talk:Timeline of DOS operating systems#Pageviews. Would appreciate any new insights anyone might have about that, either here or there. Thanks, Wbm1058 (talk) 13:32, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

@Wbm1058: If I look at those 3-4 months by itself, I see around ~196,000 pageviews with all platforms. If I look at just desktop pageviews, the total is at ~193,000. This is suspicious because mobile pageviews are usually comparable to desktop. However if I look at just this past month (where pageviews are back to the normal rate), I see the ratio of desktop vs mobile is about the same. So perhaps readers of this particular topic are usually on desktop, which is plausible. Then, I compared en:Timeline of DOS operating systems with just en:DOS, and I see the latter did not experience an unusual spike during the same time period [4]. This suggests there probably is something weird going on, but when I examined the hourly data (which is not public), nothing looked off. E.g. per-city traffic was well distributed, where often the bulk of traffic will come from one city if it is an undeclared bot. So my guess is this is a well disguised bot or the traffic is strangely authentic. Sorry I cannot help any further! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:32, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the analysis. It's not surprising to me that the mobile views are negligible, as the page is simply not designed for nor intended to be viewed on mobile. Use a big desktop monitor for the best experience; mine is 1920×1200. My guess is that somebody or some website noticed it, liked it, and promoted it. Then after ~ three months, their favorable mention fell off their main page. But I haven't seen who, not that I've looked very hard. -- Wbm1058 (talk) 21:33, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Typeahead should be case insensitive

Mobile devices tend to auto-capitalize the words typed into the dropdown box which, currently, effectively disables typeahead. --Tgr (talk) 06:36, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

I will look into this! Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 03:28, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

A sum of all redirects into views of an article

Hi guys! It'd be nice if you add a new feature in the Analysis Tool. What if views of a page per day would be shown summarized with views of all its redirects at the same day? For example, we got 20 views per day of ru:Herrenvolk and 25 views per day of ru:Раса господ (Секретные материалы), which is a redirect on ru:Herrenvolk. It would be convenient to get "45" as number of views of ru:Herrenvolk, wouldn't it? Sincerely yours, Egor Shustoff (talk) 18:36, 28 May 2017 (UTC).

@Egor Shustoff: This is next on the list! You can follow phab:T163621 for updates. In the meantime, you can use Redirect Views, a dedicated tool to get the pageviews of a page and all of its redirects. For example, see Herrenvolk. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 03:27, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

entering text and editing text in the search mask

Hi, I have two behaviours which conflict with my usage patterns, and I think are in general strange.

  • Case 1: if I copy a long link into the search mask (per mouse),e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(software) , and then mark the first URL part for deletion (with mouse), enter DEL, the whole thing gots deleted. Annoying. And yes, I minimize my keyboard typing as I tend to mistype. ;P
  • Case 2: I try to get rid of the two pre-entered example terms, Cat and dog , by clicking into the search field by mouse. I press backspace once, first one deletted. but, focus seems lost, on second backspace press, my browser (firefox) goes to the last used website and does not delete the second term.... annoying.

thanks! Shaddim (talk) 18:22, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

@Shaddim: Case #1 is something I can try to fix, but for Case #2, try clicking on the "Clear" link at the top-right above the search bar. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:09, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
thanks for looking into my fringe use case :) ... about the focus loss (case 2), this is really the first website where this happens! How can this happen overall? thank you for your good work! :) Shaddim (talk) 21:30, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
PS: second solution for me for case 1 would be also if the full URL version would be also accepted in the search mask. cheers! Shaddim (talk) 21:34, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Userviews is consistently returning "unknown error" from API

Ijon (talk) 00:17, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

@Ijon: Everything seems to be working on my end. Is it working for you now? If not, could you tell me what you put in to the form? Maybe it's just an issue with that particular user. Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:40, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Pageviews bug report

Page crash - no counter working and/or visible. Counter not avaible in German WP. Since three days. On all pages I visited. :-(

Here is the link: https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=de.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-20&pages=

as a result of being on https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirche_Sommerfeld

and putting the button left at bottom "Abrufstatistik" — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ghostwriter123 (talk)

@Ghostwriter123: Hello! It is working for me. Could you tell me what browser and operating system you are using? For example, Chrome 58 on Windows 10. Also, did you see an error, or a blank page? Could you maybe take a screenshot? Thanks! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:08, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Topviews by Country

Hi. How can access topviews by country? Or can you to add some feature to allow to have topviews and statistics by country. It would be an excellent tool to measure local interest for to learn or to know more about some topic in each country. --Repf72 (talk) 15:34, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

@Repf72: Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately geographic information on a per-article basis is not publicly available, but you can view some high-level data at stats.wikimedia.org. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 14:52, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Odd pageview stats

A very odd spike lasting for almost exactly a month, then disappearing. Does not seem natural: https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=sv.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-100&pages=Transkraniell_magnetstimulering

Best, CFCF 💌 📧 11:55, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

@CFCF: Those extra pageviews are most likely from an undeclared bot, which happens every so often. One way to test for this is to compare desktop and mobile pageviews. For many wikis (and likely svwiki, too), mobile should be comparable to desktop, yet here you'll see the spike in pageviews is only on desktop. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:19, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Diagram parameters ("diagram type", "type of scale", and "show values") are missing in the Pageviews permalink

The "diagram type", the "type of scale" (logaritmic or not) and "show values" setting are missing from the URL/permalink. This makes the permalink less useful when I send it to someone to look at a graph. The receiver should be able to display the graph the way I want it to be displayed without having to change these diagram parameters. It would thus be a great improvement if you could include these parameters in the permalink the same way as "project", "platform", "agent", "start" and "end" are included. --Larske (talk) 07:32, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

Good ideas! I have created phab:T169343 for this. In the meantime, you can at least disable the log scale by passing in autolog=false. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 14:46, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
