Talk:Tell us about your Wikipedia
Add topicWould it not be better to put each language to a subpage?
[edit](And then possibly transclude them to one place?) Not only is the main page and its history going to get unwieldily huge, with completely unrelated edits, but it would also allow easier linking from enwiki's articles about individual Wikipedias. --Maly ctenar 09:09, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- On the other hand, this would create a lot of subpages with little content. Linking is possible to sections. But I am not absolutely against subpages.--Ziko-W 09:28, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Addition: Yes, you are getting d**n right! The list is very long already. Do you have a suggestion how to present the links to the sub pages? By language family?--Ziko-W 15:21, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
results
[edit]I wrote about this in our wikipedia, I hope a few answers will arrive soon. I'd really like a summary with the results here or in a more visible place --Barcelona 20:34, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Splitting into sub pages
[edit]Dear fellow Wikipedians, thank you for your interesting information. Alas, some of you did not sign the anwers, could you please do that? Maly ctenar is absolutely right, the page becomes much to large. I am going to split it into sub pages, with each page one language edition, linked from this page by language family. In future, on the sub pages there can be more information about the language editions.--Ziko-W 10:37, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
Wikipedia >> Wikimedia Project
[edit]Wouldn't it be nice if this could instead be: "Tell us about your project"? A place for impressions and news about all Wikimedia projects in all languages, not just Wikipedias? Dovi 05:25, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- I second this. Wikipedia projects are pretty standard, well known and easily found anyway, while other projects may be more interesting to introduce. Guido den Broeder 10:01, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- Nothing against a similar project "Tell us about your project". But not all together, that would become difficult to overview. So "Tell us about your Wikisource", "... Wikinews" separate, next to "...Wikipedia". "Tell us about your Wikimedia project" then would become a category above all that.--Ziko-W 10:21, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Current split may be controversial
[edit]Often including one language in a specific family may be controversial to an opposing view. A table would be more useful. -- Cat chi? 11:55, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, some people tend to draw language matters into controversies... that's why I simply copied the list (without the number of articles that would be out of date soon), and if someone has a complaint, he can discuss at the talk page of that other page.--Ziko 10:34, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
This is sooo August 2008
[edit]In just a few months, these "tell us" documents will look terribly dated. How should an effort like this be designed, in order to stay current? Perhaps we should focus on maintaining the English Wikipedia article w:Swedish Wikipedia instead of the "tell us" document on Meta? --LA2 11:45, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
- It will take a little bit longer to make things look dated, certainly at smaller Wikipedias. That's why it's good that people write with signing. - I would like to see more information in the articles about Wikipedias, yes, but the kind of questions here are not directly suitable for an enyclopedic article. Alas there is hardly any secondary literature to quote from.--Ziko 21:00, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Move to subpages
[edit]Currently, the format is "Tell us about LANGUAGE Wikipedia". Per common precedent, I believe that these pages should be moved to "Tell us about your Wikipedia/LANGUAGE Wikipedia. The currently used formats results in a large flux of pages that are ostensibly unrelated; that is, they are not unified by a master page, when they are all very similar and derivative in nature. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 10:40, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- They are unified by a category: Category:Tell us about your Wikipedia. Cbrown1023 talk 13:32, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- I would prefer to see them all renamed to About LANGUAGE Wikipedia. -- sj | help translate |+ 00:27, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Rename linked pages to "About LANGUAGE Wikipedia"
[edit]For clarity, I would prefer to see these pages renamed to About LANGUAGE Wikipedia for each language, which can be referenced and summarized in sections of the LANGUAGE Wikipedia articles here on Meta. The end goal should be for us to have comprehensive, informative, and charming articles on every language of every Wikimedia project... -- sj | help translate |+ 00:27, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
- Hello SJ, you mean to make the pages part of a general informational system? I intended "Tell us..." as a project for one specific way to inform about language editions, while there can be also others. Page names like "About LANGUAGE Wikipedia" should be reserved for more general approaches.--Ziko 11:25, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
- Not to sound like a broken record, but the confusion with regard to "Tell us" vs. the general approach referred to by Ziko above would be avoided by subpages. Nevertheless, I appreciate that people don't want this. Just thought I'd throw my $0.02 again. ;) —Anonymous DissidentTalk 11:47, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
