Cloud hosting requirements?[edit]

Thanks for this overview.

The Wikimedia Foundation is not ready to host this platform in-house on the production environment, and its Wikimedia Cloud's implementation of Openstack is incomplete[1]

What would make us ready to host this on wmcloud? For a fast file-system, the linked blog post suggests Cinder as the path forward for now; any specific problems with that? –SJ talk  14:31, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, SJ.
Here are the requirements for deploying Open edX on OpenStack. It seems Wikimedia Cloud falls short on several counts here. I am not in a position to estimate the effort it would take to close this implementation gap of OpenStack components, but it is my understanding that it is unlikely resources would be devoted to it in the foreseeable future, based on other demands on the Cloud team's time.
So for now, we are running WikiLearn on AWS, to focus on the learning mission. I recognize that providing tech infrastructure for projects such as these potentially also falls within the Wikimedia Mission. It is still a matter of prioritization whether limited resources should be spent on creating such infrastructure now, given the availability of an affordable alternative through a vendor.
