The 21 day time period is disappointing[edit]

Yet again we see a tiny 21 day period being given for a call for candidates to the Board of Trustees. If being on the WMF BOT is an important and serious duty, the time period given for nominations does not reflect that. I thought we had learned over the years that these small windows were NOT a best practice. Yet here we are again. It seems the open call for candidates has now been extended, which is at least one month now. [1] - Fuzheado (talk) 07:59, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there, Fuzheado! Thanks for bringing this up. I don't recall any feedback from last year about the Call for Candidates window. The goal for 2021 was to match what had been done in the past. If I have missed discussion about this, please feel free to point it out to me. :) I also personally understand this Call for Candidates process has changed this year and fuller statements about complex topics are requested on the application. I can understand if you suggest this might require more time. The deadline for the Call for Candidates is now May 16. Let me know your thoughts and feel free to point others who have an opinion about this to this discussion. Best, JKoerner (WMF) (talk) 14:13, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Jackie - I believe most of the feedback about the short time window was in calls like SWAN or in Telegram chat, which is why I thought it was better to add a Talk page message for the record and to make sure it can be found in the future. In general, on SWAN calls last year, we had made the comment to @AKeton (WMF) and others at WMF that 4-6 weeks was a minimum we should be aiming for, as that gives most affiliates who meet on a monthly cycle at least one meeting to coordinate or discuss any matters of importance. Whether this is a call for board candidates, or feedback on a board resolution, or applying for the Wikimedia Summit. Thanks. - Fuzheado (talk) 18:32, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Fuzheado, Thanks for the clarification. I remember that discussion during a SWAN call but I did not personally understand it applied with the Call for Candidates as well. I'll be sure to write that down for the Post-Analysis so it is documented for future election planning. Best, JKoerner (WMF) (talk) 15:24, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
