Organizations

[edit]

About the organizations I mentioned at the Wikimania 2017 workshop, this is an overview about them in Europe [1]. --Baruneju (talk) 15:47, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Providing internet on the ground

[edit]

When there is a disaster it is important to have the information accessible.

This means the information has to be created first and accessed at the desired moment. However, at the aftermath of a disaster internetconnection can be less than optimal.

My first question is: Can Wikimedia play a role in providing this internetconnection? Derived from this is: How can we do this? What methods are available (internet-in-a-boxx) and how can we operationalize this?

Providing offline content (offline Wikipedias like Kiwix) could be very helpful if the disaster is huge and for a longer time. On Wikibooks we should have some survival books.
We should also support community networks like en:Freifunk and find ways to give them Uninterruptible power supply. --Kolossos (talk) 08:03, 11 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Tools to surface "breaking news" articles

[edit]

Wikipedia Live Monitor is a tool that surfaces articles that are being edited frequently be several users on several projects. That could be of interest to find articles of interest for this area (even though a lot of the candidates are sports events). Also available as a twitter feed. I have started Wikimedians for Disaster Response/Events to keep track of events related to Wikimedia & disaster management. Contributions most welcome. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:35, 28 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Logo proposal

I made a proposal for a logo for Wikimedians for Disaster Response. What do you think? Ainali (talk) 19:41, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Looks good to me but potentially problematic in the eyes of some Red Cross trademark person. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:15, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
I asked them. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:31, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for thinking of that. If it is a problem, I propose to switch place on the red and green colours. Ainali (talk) 22:06, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
They have not responded — not sure they will and not sure what that means for us using it. If we flip red and green, we should keep the Green Cross in mind. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 07:45, 1 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well, I suggest we go with this one. As we tried to reach out, and since the logo obviously try to distinguish us as something else, clearly our good intentions have been made known. Ainali (talk) 10:49, 1 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
I just put the logo into the page. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Article Wikipedia's response to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on the English Wikipedia

[edit]

On enwp, there is an article en:Wikipedia's response to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic that is likely of interest to folks here. I would also be interested in coordinating how we handle such content across wikis and across namespaces. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 12:57, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia workshop at German Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

[edit]

The German Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction is to take place online on 19-20 October, 2020. I had submitted a workshop "Contributions of the ecosystem around Wikipedia to communication and knowledge exchange in disaster contexts", which has been accepted and is now part of the program, scheduled to take place on 19 October at 11:30 am CEST, right after the opening panel and in parallel to some other workshops. No action needed from anyone here, but if any of you would like to be involved in preparing and/ or running the workshop, please let me know. Registration to the entire conference is free, and if you are interested in participating, please go ahead and register. Most of the program will be in German, but some bits like the opening panel and some workshops (including ours) will be in English or in both languages. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 16:13, 11 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
