Page Previews[edit]

Greetings,

Based on the positive results of a series of quantitative and qualitative tests, the Reading web team at the Wikimedia Foundation would like to enable the Page Previews feature for this project. <insert local stat from above here>

Page Previews provide a preview of any linked article, giving readers a quick understanding of a related article without leaving the current page. Recently the team has updated much of the code and addressed larger outstanding bugs. We also performed a number of qualitative and quantitative tests on the feature, all of which gave us encouraging results. A few key highlights:

  • During the Catalan and Greek test, 79% of respondents either Agreed or Strongly Agreed that Page Previews were easy to use, 76% of respondents either Agreed or Strongly Agreed that Page Previews were useful for their needs.
  • Users are viewing approximately 0.99 hovercards per session, and interacting with approximately 31% more pages each session.
  • The disable rate for the feature was very low: the rate of clicking the settings cog for Page Previews was 0.02% for Hungarian, 0.034% for Italian, and 0.016% for Russian Wikipedia. The rates for disabling the feature were even lower.
  • In our qualitative tests, 13 out of 15 questionnaire participants reported positive experiences with Page Previews.

The team proposes setting Page Previews as a default experience for logged-out readers. Logged-out users may turn Page Previews off via the cog icon displayed at the bottom of each Hovercard. Logged-in users will be able to enable the feature in Special:Preferences, but the feature will be off by default for these users. If you have the Navigation Popups gadget enabled, you will not be able to enable Page Previews without turning Navigation Popups off. Page Previews is currently a beta feature you can enable at Special:Preferences.

To learn more there is a detailed description of the feature available, including all expected functionality.

If there are concerns or questions, please share them and the team will respond. If no significant problems are identified, we would be ready to release the feature by August 2017.

Thank you.
