--Vbhubeny 12:50, 15 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Žádné "právo na soukromí loutkového účtu" neexistuje. --egg 09:05, 15 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of userpages

OK, I'll make a request on the stewards' IRC channel. --Mercy 09:49, 15 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nerozumím tomu. Je možné to vysvětlit?

Zdravím Mercy. Můj blok měl vypršet 16.2. 10:33 a v 10:26 se objevil v knize zablokování následující text: 16. 2. 2010, 10:21 Tlusťa (diskuse | příspěvky) zablokoval #36772 (do 17. 2. 2010, 10:21, vytváření účtů zablokováno) (Byli jste automaticky zablokováni, protože sdílíte IP adresu s uživatelem „Liam“. Důvod zablokování tohoto uživatele: „Loutka využitá pro trollování“.) Nerozumím tomu. Je možné to vysvětlit? --Vbhubeny 10:42, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dobrý den, jedná se o automatické blokování kvůli sdílené adrese. Kolega Tlusťa právě provedl odblokování. --Mercy 10:48, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Když někdo nechce přijmout rozhodnutí komunity a vidí věcné nedostatky v jejím rozhodnutí, tak prostě musí "sklapnout", jinak bude "umlčen" zablokováním?

O tom pochybuje i Ioannes, HomoSapiens a pravděpodobně i mnoho jiných - tedy faktická odbornost a věcnost versus ideologickému hlasování. A tady diskutuji s vámi hlavně proto, že jiná možnost mi nezbývá. --Vbhubeny 15:19, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
--Mercy 17:24, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Afroasiatic

Hi. Why did you remove interwikies from this category? In fact, "Semitic-Hamitic" and "Afroasiatic" terms are synonymes. See en:Afroasiatic languages: It did not come into general use until it was adopted by Joseph Greenberg (1950) to replace the earlier term "Hamito-Semitic", following his demonstration that Hamitic is not a valid language family. The term "Hamito-Semitic" remains in use in the academic traditions of some European countries. As there are no interwiki conflicts both in Lirhuanian and Slovakian wikipedias I don't see the purpose of this change. Regards, Hugo.arg 12:18, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Interwikis in the Hungarian Wikinews

"This article has been translated from the English wikipedia by felidae, http://www.felidae.lk. This initiative is sponsored by the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), http://www.icta.lk. Čau, VOF jsem úmyslně nepřesouval. A to z prostého důvodu.

--Mercy 07:03, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good morning, I don't think that a request is needed for such obvious cases. Best, --Mercy 06:51, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
If there was no request for the lock, then how did you even become aware of the "User:Ethical Accountability" account? How was it "obvious" to you that the "User:Ethical Accountability" account was used for purposes of deception? Before imposing the lock, did you discuss the "User:Ethical Accountability" account off-wiki rather than on Meta? Is your stated belief that the owner of the "User:Ethical Accountability" account "only disrupts the projects", a demonstrably false belief given his many constructive contributions to Wikimedia projects, mean that you should have left the decision to lock the account to a neutral steward? --JWSurf 10:15, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I believe the owner of this account now only disrupts the projects. --Mercy 10:22, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Out of curiosity, what will you do if this discussion results in the "User:Ethical Accountability" account being unblocked and detatched from the account lock? Will you respect a Wikiversity community decision or will your personal beliefs force you to over-ride the community decision? Second try... Mercy, if there was no request for the lock, then how did you even become aware of the "User:Ethical Accountability" account? How was it "obvious" to you that the "User:Ethical Accountability" account was used for purposes of deception? Before imposing the lock, did you discuss the "User:Ethical Accountability" account off-wiki rather than on Meta? --JWSurf 14:46, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
To be honest, I don't have time to read through such a long discussion. If there's a clear community decision, I'll respect it. --Mercy 14:52, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mercy, you locked this account as a ‎(sockpuppet of Thekohser). EA was a legitimate alternate account on Wikiversity, the only wiki where it has edits, created with administrative cooperation, in order to allow Thekohser Talk page access, given the global lock on Thekohser, so that he could negotiate possible terms of unblock there. The discussion on Wikiversity that JWSchmidt mentions above produced consensus for unblock, look at the very end, and User:Thekohser is now unblocked on WV, having been delinked by a 'crat. I have requested local unblock for Ethical Accountability as well, to match Thekohser, but there might be no response for a day. Meanwhile, the global lock on EA is serving no useful purpose. From the account creation dates, it looks like Thekohser created all four accounts for the same purpose, to be used for negotiation. De.wikipedia deliberately unblocked Thekohser, but has apparently not noticed the global lock. Thekohser is also unblocked on commons. I have no idea what he's doing with EA on meta, but the only account where there have been any edits is the one on Wikiversity.

If you look at Thekohser global contributions manager, you can see that there are now four WMF wikis where the account is not linked: Commons, Wikibooks, Wikisource, and Wikiversity. Two of those were deliberately delinked by a bureaucrat. On three of those wikis, the editor is active, and there is apparent consensus on Wikibooks for unblock, but a problem with implementation. (A 'crat unblocked, but an administrator reblocked against consensus and without discussion, a bit of a mess.)

There is obviously no "global ban" of this user. If you look at the global cont. manager, you will see that the basis for the "ban" was a comment by Jimbo in a heated discussion on Wikiversity. There is no official communication from Jimbo or the WMF that local wiki consensus is to be overridden on this, and almost all those local blocks were set by a steward going around to locally block so that a default of "block" could be established, but then local wikis could override it, and the original global lock was lifted by Pathoschild in early May. The global lock on Thekohser of May 30 defeated this, and some of us have asked why, and no clear reason has yet appeared. Clearly, though, stewards could again locally block if there were some WMF directive or policy behind it, and if such were clear, I assume that Wikiversity would allow this and not contest it.

I'm not requesting that the global lock on Thekohser be lifted at this time; that it exists means that a 'crat is required to unlock the account in order to complete an unblock. That may be prudent at this time. However, the lock on Ethical Accountability serves no purpose but to interrupt the possible legitimate usage of this account for opening negotiation in advance of lifting a local block or asking for lifting of a global lock.

Thanks for your attention to this. --Abd 01:21, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'll think about it later, since I'm quite busy these days. --Mercy 07:09, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
No problem. Do you object, then, if another steward reviews this and changes the global lock? Thanks. --Abd 17:13, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

As we can see here in http://eo.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Man%C4%9Deblaj_fruktoj&action=history in Esperanto eo:Uzanto:Narvalo set a the Hungarian link hu:Gyümölcs, then you followed him, and you continued setting links in these articles as we can see in http://cs.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ovoce&action=history in Czech, as you can see it is originally connected to cs:Plod (botanika), it:Frutto, ru:Плод for example and the rest of languages, but now is also connected to cs:Ovoce, it:Frutta, ru:Фрукт for example, and the rest of languages, after I set new links in different languages and I didn't realized that hu:Gyümölcs was duplicated and now is linked to other articles, As you know in Czech: Plod ≠ Ovoce, Please remove what Narvalo did, and remove all the links that you did and that I did, because are duplicated in the diferent languages, they are an obstacle for the updating of these interwikis--Noder4 14:02, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, the fact is that your bot removed the Galician article from Spanish as we can see here http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fruta&action=history, and your bot didn't restored it, but that's O.K. I repeat the links very tangled, fortunately other bot fixed quickly (sometimes bots don't act quickly in certain languages) and everything seems to be fine, anyway I let you know, thanks for answering me and being polite. --Noder4 14:29, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

University IP blocked

Hello Mercy,

Do you mind to re-check or (probably unblock) this IP Address 202.28.27.4? I believe this is my university IP address (Chiang Mai University). I am not sure if it is only this IP address or IP address range though.

Thank you. --Manop 09:23, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've removed the block, however, please be aware that it's abused as an open proxy and might be blocked by anyone else again. --Mercy 09:27, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you again. It seems that your block is already lifted, but there is another block from ProcseeBot.
Editing from 202.28.27.4 has been disabled by ProcseeBot for the following reason(s)
I think I will login through https://secure.wikimedia.org instead. I was just afraid that many good contributors might have not been able to edit during the block period(s).--Manop 10:17, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid this should be handled locally. Try contacting the bot's owner. Best regards, --Mercy 10:20, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Blocked IP

My ISP seems to use the same IP for lots of connections, resulting in vandals and legit users using the same IP. So I can understand why it's been blocked. However, I thought that if I was logged on, my IP wouldn't matter and I'd be able to upload and edit without a hitch... However, on Commons (& wikipedia occasionally), the message is coming up that my IP is blocked because of : "Cross-wiki abuse: open proxy/zombie proxy". Any way to get around this for me? As far as I know, I haven't had any malicious edits. My IP is 86.96.226.20 Thanks

PS: I also log in using the secure server...didn't make much difference.Bigforrap 09:50, 4 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thank you for your message. Your IP address has recently been misused for bot attacks and avoiding local blocks. I've unblocked it and hope the people will stop abusing it. Have a nice day! --Mercy 15:39, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the unblock. but i know that it's going to get blocked again. any way for me to separate my identity from my IP?-Bigforrap 06:42, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid, the only way to do this that comes to my mind at the moment is to change the internet connection provider. You can also contact the provider that the IP address is abused as an open proxy, but such requests from my own experience hardly ever succeed. --Mercy 07:24, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
This isn't the best advice we can give. If the user's ISP sends the XFF header to disclose a real IP for each user then we could add their proxy to the list of proxies that we accept this from. A checkuser can see if this is the case for Bigforrap and if so a ticket could be opened with the sysadmins. --Gmaxwell 13:05, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I should have also mentioned that editing via secure.wikimedia.org will probably bypass any ISP proxy and may avoid these blocks. --Gmaxwell 15:02, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Inappropriate tor blocks?

I noticed a large number of entries in the global block log from you which look like:

  • 07:39, 18 August 2010: Mercy (meta.wikimedia.org) globally blocked 74.106.17.110 (expires on 18 August 2011 at 07:39) (Cross-wiki abuse: tor exit router)

Wikimedia runs the torblock extension and automatically blocks tor exits. Why are you manually blocking these addresses? --Gmaxwell 00:21, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I'm afraid that the torblock extension doesn't work as expected. Try having a look at the cross-wiki contributions of those IP addresses. Best regards, --Mercy 07:20, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
As I recall, not all projects have chosen to block Tor completely. But this is a project decision which we should not be second guessing with random blocks on random IPs. --Gmaxwell 13:03, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, I don't block random IPs but only those that are abused. The IP you mention in your post was abused by a long-term vandal, that has been stalking various cs.wiki users for several years. --Mercy 08:28, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Please open a bugzilla ticket to request that the torblock be activated for cs.wiki if the cs.wiki community wants that and then remove the IP blocks. Users using tor will randomly select any of thousands of potential exits which are constantly changing. Because of this you can't hope to effectively block tor manually and the manual blocks will end up erroneously impacting IPs long after they stop being tor exit nodes— e.g. some exits are in dynamic address pools, some people will enable tor exiting temporarily on their desktops during big censorship events in some countries, etc. Wikimedia uses the torblock extension so that tor can be accurately controlled in spite of these challenges, but it does no good if people are continuing to issue one shot blocks instead of configuring the extension. Thanks for your attention. --Gmaxwell 23:44, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
This seems to be the best option to partially avoid problems with tor rounters' abuse. I'll ask the local community. Thanks for your advice. --Mercy 07:20, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

give 149.77.179.10 a permanent block?

On mediawiki.org, you recently gave IP address 149.77.179.10 a 1-day block, ([13]). Prior to that, the IP was blocked for 1 week for the same activity, vandalizing an important wiki formatting help page. I think that IP will continue to do that, given its list of "contributions". I'd suggest giving it a much longer block, perhaps a permanent one.

Since mw:Help:Formatting is such an important page, shouldn't it disallow changes from anonymous users? Perhaps disallow changes from newly registered users as well. --Lance E Sloan 15:25, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

S pozdravem, -jkb- 17:36, 16 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

--Mercy 08:42, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
