Careful with Spanish translations[edit]

I've just detected a few translations of yours into Spanish with obvious errors. For example, "board" may be translated as "tablero" if you mean a chess board or something like that, but a board of advisors isn't a "tablero", but something more like "junta".

In the future, if you need a translation into Spanish to be done and you don't know enough of the language, feel free to ask me. I'll be willing to help. Sabbut (talk) 16:28, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just clicked the existing 100% translation to start that page. Nothing more. Of course this can still be improved. This was not an "obvious error" (if so there are siomilar errors in other pages) to review, and these are not new.
Feel free to update these (and complete the other missing items which I did not provide). verdy_p (talk) 18:12, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ready for translation: Editing News #1—2017[edit]

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the upcoming issue of the multilingual newsletter for the visual editor, which will be widely delivered when it's end of Friday in Central Europe, and that features, among other things, rumours about a much-desired syntax highlighting tool... Thanks for your help with this, it feels great to be back. --Elitre (WMF), 17:27, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. Please let us know about difficulties you experience with the translation memory system.

Bad moves[edit]

Pages like Wikimedia LGBT/Wikimania have incoming links. Why would you move them without redirects? Especially when the talk pages are redirects? —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:16, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I had left the redirect for some incoming links (from external sites), but it was later deleted. Of course this redirect must be restored ! I had absolutely not deleted it (it was someone else) ! I'll restore the redirect immediaterly.
The move was NOT incorrect because it was matching the base page name that was using a "+", per community decision, and was renamed too (not by me!).
So no, it was absolutely not a "bad move", it was motivated and all was working when I did that. verdy_p (talk) 12:47, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Note: I have absolutely no possibility to "delete" any page, not even a redirect, on this wiki, this can only be done by local admins. This is just for proving that I cannot move any page without leaving a redirect. This is a basic feature of Mediawiki. But may be the redirect was not created due to an internal bug in Mediawiki (that has many bugs related to "deferred updates", and many more since MediaWiki 1.27 and even more since version 1.28 and all other following versions. Phabricator has a huge (and fast growing) list of bugs related to defered updates that cause lot of issues in all wikis (and not just those of Wikimedia), including repeated recursive updates that cause huge CPU load and database load and zillions of fatal errors logged in BOTH the online parser and on for the CLI background jobs.
Such deferred updates include: creating a redirect after a page move, updating the list of followed pages after an edit, sending notifications to users following a page, updating category members, counting members in categories, marking pages that depend on some dynamic keywords (such as CURRENTHOUR, PAGESINCAT, ...) to be dirty so they will be parsed again by a background job to refresh them (and possibly recategorize them), and feeding variosu tracking categories... All these defered updates are needed for maintenance but many things are now forgotten (or abandoned) due to the many bugs (which have become severely critical since MediaWiki 1.28 was deployed: this even allows some spammers to post contents that are no longer detected by followers and tracking categories and by authorized maintenance bots). MediaWiki 1.28 is a severe failure, that should have never been deployed (and all fuirther attempts to correct it in version 1.28, 1.29, 1.30 and later subversion patches have failed to fix it). In my opinion, Wikimedia should abandon completely the 1.28+ branches and revert back to version 1.27, restarting from it (yes this means that some extensions or user scripts that were updated to support 1.28+ features will no longer work as long as additional features that were added wil not be backported to the only version which is really stable : 1.27 (even if it has some minor bugs too related to deferred updates, but not critical because they have simple workaround). See for example phab:T168723 and many related critical bugs (bugs started in 1.27 but have become critical since 1.28)...
Wikimedia has spent too much time trying to fix the version 1.28 after the release, and it has severely impacted all its wikis. MW 1.28 was absolutely NOT tested correctly as it should have been before the unexpected deployment 6 months ago. Now bugs in pages are spreading everywhere and most of them are no longer fixable, logs for abandonned deferred jobs have exploded to millions of jobs and terabytes: they have been lost definitely and we still do not see any end to them. MW 1.28 has caused repeated downtime of all wikis, including Commons and English Wikiemdia, and it has caused severe increase of CPU/memory/network resources. It has costed a lot of real money to Wikimedia on its hosting colocation. I vote for urgently abandoning it and return to a stable version. Wikis outside Wikimedia are also starting to abandon MediaWiki and want to use another wiki software (and some of them have already migrated). This is dramatic because also existing Wikimedia users are also abandoning the WM projects for repeated technical reasons (that have not been solved many months after the bugs were signaled). verdy_p (talk) 13:11, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
