There will be an event and meetup to which all medical Wikipedians are very welcome on the day before the main conference starts: Thursday, August 7th 2014, 3.30 to 6.30 p.m. It is organized by John Byrne, Wiki CRUK John (talk) Wikipedian in Residence at Cancer Research UK, who will be hosting the event at their HQ at The Angel Building in Islington EC1V 4AD. There will be a presentation and discussion, followed by a move to a nearby pub. At 6.30 we move off to cover the 1.5 miles (2.3 km) to the Barbican to catch the Wikimania Opening Ceremony and drinks, starting at 7pm.

Outcome[edit]

We had a very successful meeting at CRUK, with editors from 5 continents, and several CRUK staff from various departments. Many thanks to all who came! One result can be seen at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Medicine-related_articles#A_change_to_some_of_our_headings, where improvements to some medical manual of style headings that were discussed are being opened to the WP medical community.

Programme[edit]

  • 3:15-3:30 Arrive at the Angel Building, Room 1.4
  • 3:40 Welcome. Presentation and workshop/discussion on combining accessibility and scientific precision in medical writing
  • 5.15 Online information from CRUK and elsewhere - some tips and resources
  • 5.30 Pub round the corner, joined by more of CRUK's science communications team
  • 6.30 Set off for Barbican (easiest by bus - 10-15 mins at that time)

For signup and map etc, please see the event page on the Wikimania 2014 website

Previously...[edit]

As Wikipedian in Residence at Cancer Research UK, I am very keen to take the opportunity of Wikimania 2014 in London to meet as many medical Wikimedians as possible, and of course encourage them to get involved with WikiProject CRUK and the Medical Translation project. I need to organize anything that needs booking soon, so please express your views below. I would be very grateful if people could post it to other language equivalents. Of course this is for all medical editors not just members of the Wiki Project Med thorg or local projects. Wiki CRUK John (talk) 12:05, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Who?[edit]

Who will be in London in this period, and is interested in doing something?

  1. Wiki CRUK John (talk) 11:49, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  2. I will be there all days and will be at anything medicine related. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:38, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Per Bluerasberry. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 14:47, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Will try to be at med-related meetups. MistyMorn (talk) 15:31, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  5. I'll be there and will attend whatever we do. --RexxS (talk) 18:50, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Like Bluerasberry I will attend everything medicine related, and will definitely join up. I'd like both the serious like 5., and less serious like 2. CFCF (talk) 12:25, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What? Options[edit]

1) CRUK-based presentation on writing science for a general audience, and discussion. Total time, 60-90 mins? Not during main programme I think.
2) Social, probably in a pub.
3) Lunch meet during main Wikimania programme
4) 1, followed by 2
5) Lab tour of the London Research Institute, followed by 2
6) Tour of the new (and as yet unoccupied) Francis Crick Institute, plus 2
Other - please add your own

Noting " How about something on writing style for medical content? How to communicate best with our readers, etc. MistyMorn (talk) 10:57, 23 June 2014 (UTC)" - copied from the talk page Wiki CRUK John (talk) 10:59, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: There are so many aspects to this, imo (so-called "wordsmithing" apart!). I feel that there is considerable scope for developing workable ways of catering for our very broad readership without compromising Wikipedia's core encyclopedic role. A key question perhaps is to find ways of combining appropriately presented information that is widely accessible across the general public with more in-depth content for a range of interested readers (some professional). An unusual editorial challenge, but one with many potential rewards. I think input from individuals with various backgrounds could enrich our collective awareness.
