Workshop in Rind village

[edit]

On August 7, Wikimedia Armenia employees Dato Abuladze and Mher Bekaryan, as well as the Chair of WMAM Board Susanna Mkrtchyan, were hosted at Rind Secondary School, where a meeting was organized with the school teachers. The attendees got acquainted with two Wikimedia Armenian projects: Teacher Training and WikiCamps.

Western-Armenian online Edit-a-thon

[edit]

The first Western-Armenian online edit-a-thon took place in mid-September (September 14-15, 2018) and was an immediate success in terms of active participation of experienced and new editors of Western-Armenian Wikipedia.

The two day online event brought together over 19 editors from Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, France, and Armenia in a round-the-day pursuit of creating new Western-Armenian Wikipedia entries and improving the already existing ones.

The edit-a-thon focused on the two following topics:

  • Armenian traditional costumes
  • Cuisine (Armenian and international)

In all, the edit-a-thon produced 64 new articles and 64 improved ones.

This first edit-a-thon generated a great excitement in the Western Armenian Wikipedia community and was an opportunity for the editors to work as a team and unite their efforts in a specific goal within a specific time period. It is planned to organize another edit-a-thon in October, 2018.

Community weekend

[edit]

The participants worked on the vital articles from “I create a vital article” campaign article list, students of Medical University worked on important articles of medicine. In total, 43 editors took part in the event. Wikimedia Armenia will continue its series of community events, contributing to the enrichment of the Armenian language on Wikipedia projects.

Photography talks at Wikimedia Armenia office

[edit]

On October 5, Wikimedia Armenia invited Vahe Budumian, RA Deputy Minister of Culture, to lead the workshop on “Photograph as a Documentary Tool”. Vahe Budumyan was unable to attend the workshop which instead was led by Mher Bekaryan and Gayane Vardanyan. The participants were presented the quality and legal requirements of images used on Wikimedia projects, the copyright terms and usage. Using examples, participants were presented how to upload photos to Wikimedia Commons and fill in the required details. During the two hour session, the speakers answered numerous questions of the participants. Participants were especially interested in how the quality is ensured in Wikipedia, who was the final person approving the article. Mher Bekaryan presented the whole process of Wikipedia article creation and made sure everyone understood that there was no final approval in Wikipedia and that everyone can contribute whenever new information was revealed.

Submissions in the Newsletters

[edit]

In September Wikimedia Armenia activities were represented in 2 Newsletters. We had submissions in GLAM Newsletter and in Education Newsletter. In the GLAM Newsletter we have presented the WikiData edit-a-thon held at Ara Sargsyan & Hakob Kojoyan Museum as well as the exhibition at the Metropolitem Art Museum dedicated to Armenia, "Wiki Loves Yerevan" edit-a-thon organized in the WikiClubs and the collaboration with Erebuni Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve within Community Weekend.
