Medical Wiki loves Science
Creating quality content has always been a priority for Wikimedia Armenia, especially in the fields that require special professional knowledge. The partnership with the Armenian State Medical University enables Wikimedia Armenia to successfully continue the "I create a vital medical article" campaign launched in May 2018, which aimed at creating and improving medical articles in Wikipedia.
To that end, on December 13-16, Wikimedia Armenia organized the Wiki Loves Science event in Tsakhkadzor. We have received 109 applications, of which 74 were selected. The event was attended by both experienced wiki editors and newcomers with medical background .
Experienced editors have been selected based on their contributions to Wikipedia and newcomers based on the motivation letter. It is noteworthy that at the event experienced physician editors were helping newcomers not only in editing but also in translating medical concepts to Armenian.
The articles have been translated from the corresponding English Wikipedia list. In the course of the event, 69 articles have been created and improved on various medical topics.
In 2019, Wikimedia Armenia will continue to support the development of the medical topic on Wikipedia.

Collaboration with Armenian Educational Foundation
In November Wikimedia Armenia received a collaboration offer from Armenian Educational Foundation. It is a non-profit organization based in Glendale, California. Founded in 1950, it renders financial assistance to Armenian educational institutions, and assists students of Armenian parentage to study in Armenian Higher Education Institutions.
The scholarship recipient students have an obligation to do a volunteer work during a year and for diversifying the students choice the organization has decided to apply for a volunteer opportunity where the students can invest their intellectual abilities. The parties agreed to involve students in editing Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Therefore AEF announced about the volunteer work which interested around 70 students. In December Wikimedia Armenia organized 2 workshops for AEF 39 students with further agreement to begin editing process in January. As a result, Wikipedia editing attracted 15 students who are actively editing under the coordination of Wikimedia Armenia Education program coordinator.
There is an agreement to continue conducting workshops for another AEF students in January.
New Year Postcards
Preparation of New Year cards for our partners, colleagues and donors became a real team building exercise this year. We sat together to decide on design, bought necessary materials and then prepared almost 100 handmade cards on our own. Everyone felt the team spirit and enjoyed being the part of the process. We have received great feedback from our partners, who received the card, saying they felt the love the cards were prepared with!
YSU students of Turkish Studies

Editing Christmas Wiki-tree
It was interesting to communicate with different participants for the first time, to follow their interesting dances, funny jokes, taking photos. I discovered the Wikiworld from another angle which is lovely and different. The editors assembled the Christmas tree and decorated it .... and a real and sincere smile on their faces did not disappear even for a second. Of course, the most enjoyable thing was that I found a group of people that did not isolate the stranger but make him one of them․
— Violla Mosikyan
It is the third year now that Armenian Wikipedia editors gather at Wikimedia Armenia to decorate the Christmas Tree. Editors of different Wikimedia projects, Wikimedia Armenia volunteers participated in the event. Decorating the Christmas Tree at Wikimedia Armenia is a magical moment to make the first Christmas wish.

Improving most viewed articles
The Quality content program of Wikimedia Armenia aims at increasing the quality of articles to develop trust towards the Armenian Wikipedia. The most viewed articles, mostly created many years ago, lack quality - citations, content, diversity of sources, formating, and style. As shows the topviews stats, the majority of the most viewed articles are about Armenian culture, geography, celebrities, politicians etc.
We have designed an editing project on the Armenian Wikipedia in order to improve these articles. The list of the most viewed articles was created on the base of analysis of the topviews stats of 2018. For each of the article we have found various reliable online and printed sources, which we have digitized. The list contains 200 articles, from which 163 need improvements and citations.
Collaboration with Yerevan Drama Theatre after Hrachya Ghaplanyan
In December, Wikimedia Armenia launched a partnership with Yerevan Drama Theater after Hrachya Ghaplanyan. A Memorandum of cooperation has been signed, according to which the theater will issue free licensed content to Wikimedia Armenia to use on Wikimedia projects. All this content will be used to improve the Wikidata items of theater actors, performances, theater history and to edit articles on the Wikipedia. As a result of this collaboration, the theater has provided about 30 posters to upload to Commons which would be used in the articles on Dramatic Theater performances.
In the framework of the Culture Conservation program, Wikimedia Armenia launched its "Singing Wikipedia" program in November 2018. The goal of the project was to make Armenian folk songs accessible and heard on the Wikimedia projects. In November and December, 20 songs were recorded and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The songs have been performed by Wikimedia Armenia's volunteer and folk singer Anush Stepanyan. All the songs were performed a cappella. They have been recorded in Wikimedia Armenia and uploaded under a free license, as these are folk and national songs or which authors lived and worked in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The recordings will be used in the articles of Armenian folk and national songs on Wikipedia.

Western Armenian edit-a-thon
- Western Armenian edit-a-thon
- December 14-15-16, 2018
The fourth Western-Armenian edit-a-thon was the final one for the year 2018. It took place in mid December and once again gathered together a group of active Western-Armenian Wikipedia editors.
The three-day online event brought together editors from Syria, Lebanon, and Armenia in creating new Western-Armenian Wikipedia entries and improving the already existing ones.
This time around, the edit-a-thon focused on completing the list of potential articles that were not edited or improved during the past three events. Thus, over one hundred articles on various topics and with relevant sources were offered to the editors.
In all, 11 new articled were edited and 4 articles were improved.
Digitization programs aim at increasing the number of Armenian works on the internet, mostly through Wikisource. In order to achieve this goal Wikimedia Armenia digitizes public domain books at the office. These books are usually borrowed from the National Library of Armenia.
The online catalog of the National Library of Armenia (NLA), shared under CC license, is well structured, however, it has been always difficult for us to find public domain authors. To have the full list of the public domain authors, as well as to know authors entering the public domain in upcoming years, we carried out the creation of Armenian authors' pages on Wikisource.
LetterBot created more than 7000 author pages on Wikisource with their birth and death dates. The authors' data was taken from the online catalog of NLA and mainly includes Armenian authors. This data was previously not available anywhere in Wikimedia projects. The authors list is also categorized by the year they will enter in the public domain and also includes public domain authors. The latter is now comprised of 1423 authors allowing us to find and digitize more public domain books!
Submissions in the Newsletters
In December Wikimedia Armenia has submissions in 4 Newsletters: GLAM, Education, Aztag Daily and "Nor Shahumyan" newspaper. In the GLAM newsletter we have represented WMAM cooperation with Yerevan Drama Theatre after Hrachia Ghaplanian and photographer Vahan Kochar, as well as "Singing Wikipedia" project. The December issue of the Education Newsletter was postponed and will be published in January. We have also an article submitted in "Aztag Daily" Lebanese newsletter which will be published in the New Year Special edition. The article tells about Western Armenian section of Armenian Wikipedia, how the articles are written, the general ideology of the online encyclopedia and Wikimedia Movement. Karvachar WikiClub coordinator - Tamara Grigoryan - has written an article for the local "Nor Shahumyan" newspaper on the theme "WikiClubs as non formal education centers in rural areas". On the basis of this article a reportage had been prepared which was broadcasted on Artsakh public radiostation.
