Wikimedia at the 20th ICOM-CC Triennial Conference

Help us share museums' knowledge with communities everywhere[edit]

For several years, Wikimedia affiliates have supported ICOM through an International Museum Day campaign to document museums. There have also been collaborations to illustrate and disseminate Red Lists to protect cultural heritage in Afghanistan and Southeast Europe. We believe that ICOM's new definition of museum,[1] which highlights the importance of inclusivity and community participation, is an opportunity to promote further collaboration.

“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”
