Welcome to the Wikimedia group of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Today we celebration six years of the free circulation of knowledge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This adventure started on 23 November 2018 (the date on which our user group was recognised officially and affiliated with the Wikimedia movement) in the IT training room in the administrative building of the University of Kisangani, where several young people with a passion for philosophy and free information created what is known today as Wikimedians de la Réplique Démocratique du Congo (WMDRC), or Wikimedians of Democratic Republic of Congo in English.

Cette aventure a commencé le 23 novembre 2018 (date à laquelle notre groupe d'utilisateur à été reconnu officielement en tant qu'affilié du mouvement Wikimedia) dans la salle de formation en informatique du bâtiment administratif de l’Université de Kisangani, où quelques jeunes passionnés par la philosophie de l'informatique libre ont créé ce qui est aujourd'hui connu sous le nom de Wikimedians de la Réplique Démocratique du Congo (WMDRC) ou Wikimedians of Democratic Republic of Congo (en anglais).

Mission

We promote free access to knowledge, primarily across Wikimedia projects, to collect, create and share educational, cultural and historical resources, freely - in general and related to the DRC in particular.

Goals

The main objectives of WMDRC-UG are:

  • Promote Wikipedia and its sister projects ;
  • Act as ambassadors for Wikimedia in DRC
  • Hold meetings at least once a month ;
  • Enlarge the Wikipedia community
  • Production of local content.

A good way for the group to achieve the objectives it has set out, is that it hopes to organize training sessions, edit-a-thons and capacity building sessions both online and offline, as well as organizing various competitions and open source initiatives.
