Your question

Replied to your question for the 2012 stewards knees-up, I hope that it covers what you are seeking. If you want to pick the eyes out of it, happy to do so on my local talk page. And with your use of the word "kerfuffle", I would geolocate you as a Pom. billinghurst sDrewth 01:29, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

No need to pick the eyes out of it, as you say, your answer is pretty much was I was looking for, just a general response to the whole situation and commentary about the proper role of stewards. And actually I'm an Alaskan, but we use a lot of funny words because people from all over theworld havesettled here over the years. Beeblebrox 02:15, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
If I get to be a steward … interventionist with spam, non-interventionist with communities … they truly do manage themselves. The get out clause would be where a collection of stewards believed thatas a last resort we had a major issue, what sort?, no idea until we get to it. To me stewardship is a better quality vacuum cleaner with wet/dry attachments, I am not looking to set the world on fire, just to do the work. Apologies for calling you a Pom, you all look the same from this far away on the internet. ;-) billinghurst sDrewth 13:05, 13 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Kerfuffle

I'm sorry on many counts about what happened between you and WizardofOz. He was a fine and prolific steward, despite occasional crankiness. I see why you were taunting him, but the results on all counts, starting with your block and ending with his leaving and your new talk-page notice, are a pity.

Meta discussions are not generally hostile to en:wp admins, but they are sensitive to people from any particular project trying to push the community here around unilaterally, which jeh managed to do, intentionally or not. Thank you for standing up for what you saw as right. SJ talk | translate   14:47, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

In the end I wonder if this isn't at least partially an issue of timing. The first two admins "on the scene" as it were seemed hell-bent on quashing discussion of deleting the page, which of course led directly to the escalation that turned this from a minor disagreement into an all-out dramafest. On a larger project, it's likely more admins would have arrived sooner and things might have turned out very differently if they had all had a discussion before Wizard and I got into that rather nasty exchange on Jehochman's talk page.
I know rules are different here, but if what Wizard was doing (edit warring, openly using his admin status to threaten other users, ordering a discussion closed because in his view it could not result in deletion regardless of what consensus was reached, using his admin authority in a dispute he was directly involved in, and of course blocking a user he was involved in a dispute with instead of asking another admin to step in and handle it) is just considered "crankiness" and not "extreme abuse of advanced permissions" then some serious changes are needed here. I can assure that any en admin, regardless of how long they had been there, how many friends they had, or what other advanced permissions they held, who acted as he did would be summarily desysopped by ArbCom. The way he completely freaked out, handing all his advanced tools and demanding his account be globally locked or he would go on a vandalism spree suggests he probably was already experiencing burnout before this incident, so maybe this just made it happen a bit sooner, I don't know, but it's alarming to me that many users here seem so nonplussed by his behavior during this incident. Anyway, thanks for your remarks, I sincerely hope that in the end this incident serves to bridge the apparent gap in understanding between en.wp and meta instead of widening it. I've just floated a new policy proposal at Meta:Proposal for a policy on involved administrators. As this would apply to all Meta admins, it seems like it would be a good thing to have it translated so that it can be discussed. My strength has never been the technical/coding end of things and I'm afraid I'm having a bit of difficulty even requesting a translation, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
