CIS-A2K is going to conduct an Image Description Month in India description-a-thon in the collaboration with Image Description Month. This month-long campaign aims to enhance the descriptions of visual content, particularly images, on Wikimedia Commons. The goal is to make them more accessible, discoverable, interconnected, and usable across all languages within Wikimedia projects. This campaign is scheduled to run throughout October 2023.

  • The mission is to elevate these visuals, particularly images, on Wikimedia Commons to new heights of accessibility, discoverability, interconnectivity, and usability across all languages within the Wikimedia projects.

Focused Projects

  • Wikipedia is the one the project where contributors can write a Caption, when adding an image to a Wikipedia article or section, it's essential to provide a caption that contextualizes the image within the content. A well-crafted caption should concisely explain the image's relevance to the topic being discussed.
  • On Wikidata, enhance the Wikidata item's visual appeal and information by associating it with a relevant image. Use the property "image" (P18) to link the image to the corresponding Wikidata item.
  • The last but not least Wikimedia Commons, Create a Unique and Descriptive title, add Structured Data Captions in Multiple Languages, to make the image more accessible to a global audience, categorize the Image, add Depicts Statements, nominate Quality Images and so on.

The "Image Description Month in India" was a collaborative initiative conducted in India. This one-month edit-a-thon saw active participation from a total of 21 contributors. The campaign focused on editing two major projects, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

Throughout the campaign:

  • 243 captions were edited.
  • 1 caption was modified.
  • 3007 depictions were added.
  • 54 depicts were updated.
  • 215 uploads were made on Wikimedia Commons.
  • 607 categories were added.
  • 350 categories were edited.

Additionally, the efforts resulted in the inclusion of 22 new images, and updates were made to 2 existing images on Wikidata. The active involvement of participants showcased a collective dedication to enhancing image descriptions and enriching content on these platforms.
