Support requested for Kannada Wikipedia Workshop at Canara College, Mangaluru[edit]

Dear A2K team,

Canara College is a prestigious institution owned and run by the Canara High School Association, Mangalore. Canara College with its noble vision to prepare educationally strong and culturally vibrant students; is a prestigious institute for higher learning, well acclaimed to have its deep rooted existence since 1973 with its moral ideals, rich core values and fusion of cultural ethos. It has a glorious history and legacy in the field of imparting value-based, character building education to its aspirants. True to its motto of “Educating for Righteous Life” and philosophy of commitment towards offering quality education at an affordable cost, it is located centrally in the coastal educational hub of Mangaluru city. The institution is a Konkani Linguistic Minority Institution, governed and managed by Canara High School Association, Mangaluru, reaccredited by NAAC and affiliated to Mangalore University.

It offers undergraduate programs in Commerce (B. Com), Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com) Professional with Coaching for CA and CS, Science [B. Sc. (PCM, PMC, and BZC)], Computer Applications (BCA) and Business Administration (BBA) and a post graduate program in Commerce (M. Com.).

The vision of our Pioneers was to provide complete education which would integrate the ancient Indian ethos with modern, scientific and technological forefront. To create awareness about ‘Wikipedia’, Department of Computer Science, Canara College, Mangalore is planning to organize a two day workshop for the faculties and students of Canara College in association with 'The Centre for Internet and Society', Bengaluru and 'Karavali Wikimedians group' on July 27, 2019 and July 28, 2019. I am submitting this request for financial support from CIS-A2K. The proposed activities and estimated budget are furnished below.


Proposed activities

  • Wikimedia movement and Knowledge sharing
  • Policies and guidelines of Wikimedia.
  • Basics of Wikipedia editing
  • Modifying input tools, pre-requisites (e.g. community consensus), and overall process
  • Creating user documentation for new users to learn how to contribute to Wikimedia projects
  • Templates and other on-wiki technical needs

Expected impact Short-term:

  • They know the basics of Wikipedia editing
  1. All the participants know how to create new articles, translate from other Wikipedias, edit existing articles
  2. They know about the basic anatomy of an article, and the importance of citations, images/media
  3. Identify the most important articles that need to be created
  • They can take the lead in modifying the existing input method
  • They can make use of templates in articles
  • They can create user documentation to help new editors learn about editing, and using the input method.

Report

Department of Computer Science and Applications, Canara College, Mangaluru in association with Centre for Internet Society (CIS A2K), Bengaluru and Karawali Wikimedians User Group, Mangaluru organized a two days’ workshop on Kannada Wikipedia on July 27–28, 2019 at Canara College to the students and faculty. The workshop was inaugurated by Sri. M. Ranganatha Bhat., honorary secretary of the Canara High School Association by lighting the lamp. He pointed out “contributions of articles to Wikipedia will benefit students in particular and society in general“ in his inaugural speech. He also advised, through Wikipedia contributions , youth can make the best use of their time. The chief guest of the inaugural ceremony Sri. Gopalakrishna A., said that his participation in the Wikipedia Education programme has helped him to pursue his career in the CIS centre and the students need to participate in workshops of this kind organized by the college and make the best use of the opportunities.

Guest of honor Ms. Dhanalakshmi K.T Economic Analyst, Northern Trust, Bengaluru said that working with Wikipedia provides a professional experience to the students. Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana, President, Karawali Wikimedians User Group, Mangaluru delivered the keynote address. Sri. Praveen Prabhu, President, Canara College Alumni, shared his experiences with Wikipedia. Dr. Premalatha Pai., Principal in-charge presided over the function. She conveyed her best wishes to the oragnizers and participants. Mrs. Jayabharathi K.P., HOD., Department of Computer Science and Applications welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Babitha Shetty Convenor of the two days’ workshop delivered the vote of thanks. Mrs. Thara Kumari., Associate Professor., Department of Kannada., compeered the inaugural programme.

The inaugural function was followed by the practical session. The students from Canara College, St. Aloysius College, Govt. College, Ajjarakadu, Udupi., actively participated and benefited from this workshop. Along with the students the faculty from Canara College, St. Aloysius College & Sri Ramakrishna College also participated. The faculty members of the department and the members of the Karawali Wikimedians User Group were present on both days. The two days’ workshop concluded by distributing the certificates to the participants.

  • Introduction

This project aims to provide offline Tulu Wikipedia to schools. Tulu has been introduced as a language by Govt of Karnataka in 70 schools of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka State of India. Students studying in 6th to 10th standard have the option of choosing Tulu as a language. There is no printed encyclopaedia in Tulu. Students who have chosen Tulu as a language of study have no encyclopedic book to refer other than the prescribed textbook. Tulu Wikipedia can bridge this gap effectively. Students can read article related to the topics of their study from Tulu Wikipedia. Most schools where Tulu is taught have computers but very few have Internet connection. This project envisages providing offline Wikipedia to those schools where Tulu is taught as a language. This will empower the students studying Tulu as a language with knowledge about their land and culture as well as with the latest world knowledge in their language. This is not the problem of Tulu students alone. Those who want to read encyclopedic content in Tulu have no resources available. Many books of encyclopedic in nature which have content about the rich culture, language, tradition of Tulunadu (Tulu land) are available in Kannada and English but none in Tulu. This project will also help all those who are looking for encyclopedic content in Tulu, be it about Tulu culture, language, tradition or about all other world knowledge in Tulu.

  • What are the Proposed activities?

The aim is to provide students with articles on topics related to the subjects taught as prescribed in their syllabus. A project has been initiated in Tulu Wikipedia with list of articles on various topics based on the school syllabus.

The activities to begin with are (for which this request is being made)-

  • Workshop to explain the project to Tulu writers and editors who will add article to Tulu Wikipedia.
  • Series of editathons to add articles to Tulu Wikipedia.
  • What are the Expected impact?
This project aims to achieve these-
  • Try to achieve the required number of articles created in Tulu Wikipedia.
  • Create offline Tulu Wikipedia using Kiwix and put it in a USB drive.
  • Distribute the offline Tulu Wikipedia to schools.
  • Train the school faculty in installing and using the offline Tulu Wikipedia.
  • What is the Estimate budget (give it with a detailed break-up)?

But the Government of Karnataka created the Karnataka Tulu Literary Academy, they has allowed to do the Tulu litrary job. The Academy has produced Tulu language textbooks.   • ರಾಮಕೃಷ್ಣ, ಅಲೋಶಿಯಸ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು edit a thon ನಡೆಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಬಂದ output ತುಂಬಾ ಕಡಿಮೆ!. ಆ ಕಾರಣ money west. ಸುಮಾರು 15 edit a thon ನಡೆದು ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ ಮಂದಿ ಯಾರು wikipedia edit ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.?. 6 edit a thon ಗಳಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ ?.
There were many workshops and editathons. Some might not have produced any articles. For ex., the editathons at Subrahmanya, Sullia. Probably they were not planned well.   1. How will you promote this project in Tulunadu? And what is the approach of involving college students in series of edit-a-thons?

  1. We will promote this through social media, radio, local TV channels and newspapers. Since Tulu Sahitya Academy is a collaborator, they also will be promoting in their meetings and through their members.
  2. Most editathons will be conducted at colleges for using computer lab with Internet connections. Students also will be participants in the editathons. Wikipedia Students Associations will be invited to join.
  3. Total articles needed are about 700. Some are already created. We target to complete the required number of articles not just during the editathons, but also after each editathon. We try to make it a continuous effort. We have seen in the past that the tempo is kept alive by regular editathons. Hence editathons are a must. This also due to the fact that some editors don't have access to infrastructure like computer and Internet at home.   1. Do you need any other support from CIS-A2K during edit-a-thons such as trainers, resources etc?
  2. There is an opposition for this request on village pump. How will you solve that.

@Gopala (CIS-A2K): Thanks for the additional queries. Here are my responses-
  1. We don't need any trainers. CIS-A2K may support by providing other resources like projector, swags, books (if available), etc.
  2. There is no real opposition. The person who started the project himself has opposed it without giving any logical or scientific reason. I have already answered him in VP itself. He has written that the project has not moved in two years. Yes, we are requesting funds to move and complete the project. That is quite obvious.

  1. Karavali Wikimedians will be responsible for implementation and reporting. I will create metrics and upload the relevant data. Other key persons will be Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana, Dr. Kisohre Kumar Rai, Bharatesh Alasandemajalu, Dhanalakshmi K T, Vinoda Mamatha Rai. The students of two schools where Punjabi Wikimedians are starting the Education Program in 2019 have been invited by Head, Department of Anatomy, PGIMER, Chandigarh to the Scientific Program of 12th I.J. Dewan Memorial Workshop on "Organ Talk: Time to take Prevention"which is a workshop cum awareness program on health education. There will be six stations, in which demonstrations on various normal and diseased organs along with various posters will be given by the department faculty and teaching staff. This experience will give students the practical exposure to conditions like liver cirrhosis due to alcohol, damaged lungs due to smoking, osteoporotic bones, brain with extradural hematoma due to head injury, fatty deposits in heart due to junk and fatty food, ill effects of excessive use of mobile phones with interactive posters and actual specimens.

  • What are the Proposed activities?
In this year (2019), the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group has decided to organize the Wiki Loves Monuments in India for the second year in a row. Through this competition event the people are invited to upload images of monuments under a free license for usage on Wikimedia projects.
After finishing the event, the community will declare the names of ten winners and award them the prizes apart from sending those entries for the global challenge. The prize will be Gift Vouchers (like Amazon, Flipkart etc) and SWAG materials like Post cards. We are requesting CIS to provide us the prize money/ financial support.
  • What are the Expected impact?
Going by previous year statistics (here and here), the expected impact is as follows:
  • Number of participants: 2000
  • Number of new users: 1500
  • Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: 10000
  • Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: 300

  • Introduction

Coastal Karnataka called as Tulunadu. Tulunadu is one of the cultural regions which is special in many ways. This is a miniature India where different religions and communities co-exist. They relate to the life and culture of the region and are inextricably linked with the tradition and culture of the region. They take us into a complex world of rituals, beliefs, practices, customs, traditions, and entertainment. Therefore, it is imperative to understand their meaning, nature, structure, and subject- matter in order to understand their function in a traditional Tuluva society.

There are millions of people here do not have any written record for their culture and history. Most of them live in a rural area, they belong backward community and even tribe people with very difficult or no access to modern technology. Very few people outside of their community know about, their religious ceremonies, folk dances, rural artisans skills which are very important in the era of skill development. The skill sets they are having in the field of artisanship and herbal medicines and medicinal plants are to be preserved.

  • What are the Proposed activities?

Therefore we would like to record this oral history and culture through reports, photos, and videos, with Text-Performance-Documentation and Reconstruction of folk dance. For that, we want to be in touch with them and persuade them to record the explicit expression of their capabilities. Already we tried to connect with the people but some rituals will be conducted at the auspicious time according to the Tulu calendar in the day or after sunset.So it is imperative on our part to understand and assimilate who is who and where is where in respect of such rituals.

Anna university is the one of premier institution in Tamil Nadu. Anna University at Madurai has showed the interest in wikipedia workshop as a result of our outreach. We have planned one day Tamil wikipedia workshop for 50 students from same institutions. As this is the pilot batch in the university, we have intended to shortlist the students who has showed interest and has wikipedia account prior to registration. The institution will support on infrastructure and student participations. We have also partnered with madurai based Kalam, an NGO who works on education fields, for local logistic and publicizing support. The Key activities includes to knowledge sharing on Creative commons, wikimedia projects, wikipedia edits, wikipedia APIs.

  • Students get to know about basics of wikimedia projects
  • Students get to know about how to create new articles, translate from other Wikipedias, edit existing articles

We will organise a workshop in Punjabi University, Patiala. It was decided quickly to organise event because students shall have their exams in next month. Students from Punjabi department shall take part in this workshop. Registration of students has been done. So, we will create and edit content about Guru Nanak Dev during the workshop. Some of Punjabi Wikimedians User Group members shall take part as trainee. We are organising this workshop because Punjabi government is celebrating 550 Years of Guru Nanak Dev's birth. It is a first event related to this celebration, so we can do big event or workshop in next few months.

All india Santali Writer's Association is going to conduct its 32nd Annual Conference on 23 and 24 November 2019 at Rabindra Mandap, Bhubaneswar, odisha with collaberation of Adim Owar Jarpa-Bhubaneswar. This is the ocassion where santali writers from across the India will come together.Many Santali Book Sellers and Publisher will put their two day camp here.It is expected 1500-2000 writers, readers and leterary person will visit this two day event. Santali Wikipedia will set off his stall for two days it will exihibit videos and disseminate leaflets in order to maximise awareness reagarding santali wikipedia among educated wtiters mass of the santali community.Volunteers of OLCHIKI-TECH Bhubanesar are also going support us for arrangement (non financial) in this cause.

On this ocassion Santali Wikipedia Community see this as an Opportunity to hold a public outreach event so as to promotes the santali wikipedia draw the attention of the writers for contribution in santali wikipedia.

Dear CIS-A2K Team,

I got a laptop in Hardware donation program but the charger was defective from day one. Now the charger has stopped working and presently I am working in a West Bengal Wikimedians User Group event called Documenting Kolkata Heritage . Due to some personal reason, I am not able to afford this apple charger, as it is too expensive for me. I am seeking help from CIS-A2K for the same. If CIS-A2K provide me with the apple charger for my laptop so that I can carry on my project and other daily activities.

  • Occassion of this event is to celebrate 16th Anniversary of Telugu Wikipedia. So, Celebrating the occasion (cake cutting) and presenting Wikimedians a swag (Coffee cup with Wikipedia logo and hyperlink) are part of the event.
  • This event is intended to be for Active Telugu Wikimedians and main agenda item is to discuss issues everyone find in Telugu Wikipedia.
  • Based on the discussion around current issues with Telugu Wikipedia, members discussed on possible suggestions to improve the situation in terms of quality, content and participation.
  • Discussion also happened about governance structure needed in Telugu Wikipedia level, Upcoming Wikipedia stall in Hyderabad book festival, and other aspects. These discussions lead to further action items.
  • What are the Expected impact?
  • Points discussed in the event were published in Telugu Wikipedia for further discussion on wiki and will be consolidated into an action plan.

Office space for VideoWiki Community Engagement Workshop 2020[edit]

Background

  • VideoWiki (also known as WikiVideo) (https://videowiki.wmflabs.org/en), a proposed sister site of Wikipedia, under the Wikimedia Foundation, aims to make Wikipedia more accessible by adding a visual component (“summary videos”) to Wikipedia. As the technical development goes on, we would like to now go on with introducing and helping non-English languages communities to use the tool. The power of VideoWiki lies in using for native languages, which have very less video content related crucial topics such as medicine. Since we are the very beginning, we would like to engage with communities in India.

Proposed activities

  • A 3-day training event (24-26 January 2020) will be conducted, to which Wikimedians from 5-6 Indian language Wikimedia communities and also a few Wikimedians local of the venue city (Delhi) will be invited. We will be having one or two online orientation sessions before the main workshop. During the 3-day workshop, participants will be first introduced the vision of VideoWiki and how the project came into being. This will be followed by a training on the VideoWiki tool — participants will be given a complete demonstration of VideoWiki script writing and rendering videos from the scripts.
  • During the initial localisation steps of localisation, technical infrastructure such as templates needs to be setup on the local Wikis. It will be done during the workshop. After working on at least two videos each (during the workshop itself), we will take feedback regarding the working of VideoWiki tool in their language, and pass them to the technical developers. If time permits, we will have more hands-on practice of producing articles. Towards the end of the workshop, we will have conversations with the participants about further expansion in India and collect their thoughts on the strategy we should be adopting.

Support required As already linked above, financials of the event are being supported through a Rapid Grant from WMF, which has already been funded. We will have at maximum 10 participants and the event will take place on 24, 25 & 26 January 2020. We would like to required use of CIS's office space in Hauz Khas, Delhi, as venue to event. No financial support is required.
