Discussion[edit]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • Somebody forgot the geotargeting. I've just changed it to the requested New York, New Jersey, Italy (and added Italian as a language). In case other adjustments are needed, don't hesitate to ping me. —DerHexer (Talk) 10:17, 23 September 2020 (UTC) PS: The proposal is unclear whether it's just logged-in or also anonymous users. Currently, the banner is set to logged-in only.[reply]
  • @DerHexer: The proposal was to target logged-in users globally, and anonymous users locally, for the duration of the three days. This isn't a standard option, but it's been done before. I turned on the global one first, and had planned to turn on the local one today. Perhaps we could also shorten the banner message if that helps.--Pharos (talk) 12:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Pharos: “Target both logged-in and anonymous in New York and New Jersey in the US, possibly in Italy as well” as single criterion for geotargeting looked pretty clear to me while “Logged-in editors globally, both in select areas” looked quite unclear to me, to be honest, “globally” could have meant all=global projects, too. I also took into concern that there is currently a global logged-in users campaign running, Wiki Loves Monuments, where I couldn't find any discussions with WLM organizers about priorization, banner impressions, etc. which Central Notice administrators will need to set up both logged-in campaigns appropriately (ping @Romaine: as WLM campaigns contact and @Effeietsanders: as WLM co-inventor and co-organizer). Any (new) logged-in campaign should have approval by/notification of all affected communities which I cannot find here and translations into the local languages. Such procedures have been a requirement at other campaigns, too, and these campaigns where even limited to those countries where contact persons were already named. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 13:38, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • @DerHexer: The request form is rather inadequate, I answered as best I could. The only geotargeting would indeed be local for New York and New Jersey, to catch a wider range there because of the local interest. I do think "Do you wish to show banners to Logged In users, Anonymous Users or Both? Do you want to target users with a specific number of edits or average monthly?: Logged-in editors globally, both in select areas" is quite clear. I have done this bifurcation for campaigns before, though perhaps I am the only one to have done it so far, and I could help update the request form. There was notification of English Wikipedia, and we're not asking for any other languages at this time. Happy to give WLM some prioritization, but keep in mind this campaign is much shorter than the WPWP one.--Pharos (talk) 14:23, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
        • @Pharos: There is no way to target enwiki only, please use en:MediaWiki:Sitenotice instead. Languages (here: en) in CentralNotice targets the user settings (or standard settings of the wiki). Wherever a user has set en in their preferences, the banner will be displayed. It will be displayed to all such users if you don't add a geolocalization. For that reason it was also displayed to me (based in Germany) on metawiki where I have English language set. PS: But I find the solution found below useful, too. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:55, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • The final week of Wiki Loves Monuments usually has the highest number of uploads, and when the banner for WLM is then missing that can cause huge impact on the results. So it would be certainly appreciated by the local organising teams in the various (WLM) countries if for the fashion project the banner could only be a % or some other limitation. WLM is in September mainly organised in Europe, while in October Canada and the US will organise it. So from WLM's perspective it is fine to have a full banner in the US and Canada.
Overall, various users in the movement think that there are too many banners, so that pushes for a drive that globally banners are rarely done. Of course we should target banners as specific as possible to prevent an overload of banners, but at the same time I believe that global banners can't be avoided in some instances, as there is a need to connect with a large audience around the world. Romaine (talk) 15:26, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Romaine: Thanks you, I have modified it for now so that it is only targeting the US, where there is no WLM conflict at all. I was thinking perhaps we could run it at a smaller percentage in other countries if that worked for WLM?--Pharos (talk) 15:32, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also indicated this on chat: if a national organizer welcomes it, I don't have strong objections. But Romaine is right, the last week and the first few days of a campaign are usually most impactful for WLM. Italy has especially a lot going on WLM, with a lot of activities and collaborations relying on it. Effeietsanders (talk) 16:00, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
