Note: you specifically need to paste the URL for this to happen. Seems like an easy to fix bug. --Tgr (talk) 18:14, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tgr In Firefox 111.0a1 just clicking on the link causes it to happen. Lectrician1 (talk) 19:50, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
When I tried I was taken to the article. There is no X to click. Whether I right-clicked to open in new tab or pasting in a new window made no difference.
I guess this suggests Media Viewer is the bug. (I have it turned off for English.) Al12si (talk) 20:40, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Al12si: Try pasting into a new private-browsing window. That's the only way I'm able to reproduce this, but when I do that it happens every time. SWilson (WMF) (talk) 02:51, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SWilson (WMF) – That was what I tried (after seeing open in new tab didn’t work). Perhaps this is browser-specific? (I’m using a Blink-based browser, but it’s not Chrome.) Or do you mean a private tab that is not logged in? (I always work in private mode, so all my private tabs are logged in.) Al12si (talk) 04:38, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Al12si: Yes, it looks like it happens in Firefox, Chrome, and Chromium. I see it whether I'm logged in or not, and on Chromium it doesn't seem to matter if it's a private window or not. SWilson (WMF) (talk) 05:01, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Comment I'm using the latest version of Opera GX and when I paste the URL and click the X, it automatically boots me into a broken reader mode that will load indefinitely rather than closing the tab or returning me to a blank screen. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 23:11, 10 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This should be fixed in the next MediaWiki release (hopefully everywhere by 11th May) Jdlrobson (talk) 18:37, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Strong support I didn't know it was a thing, but it is really annoying. —2dk (talk) 19:14, 10 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Support Very annoying behavior when img links are suggested from browser history instead of the articles SoupePrimordiale (talk) 07:03, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Support as in general, closing tabs should not be taken lightly, and this is definitely not a suitable application for it. TheDragonFire300 (talk) 13:59, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
