This brings the Fellow up to 3 days at the Metropolitan New York Library Council.

- Dorothy has been a huge help in organizing community events around New York City and her affiliation with METRO has introduced our community to many other groups of volunteers to which we would not be able to meet otherwise. I would like to see the funding that she gets from METRO to be supplemented to give her more time to do even more of what she already has been doing for the past year. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:15, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
Info: The following institutions have already been in contact with METRO (as of August 1st, 2013 about Wikipedia and glam-wiki opportunities). For full list of current outreach see: Metro's GLAM page.
Cultural Heritage
Info: This list is comprised of institutions which have emailed METRO and expressed interest in a Wikipedia event. Because of limited working capacity, METRO has expected the WiR to prioritize its member institutions. METRO's current Wikipedian-in-Residence has been unable to respond to these requests but hopes to use the extra allotted day to begin working with these institutions as well as others who reach out.
Cultural Heritage
(Note: At the following institutions, the point of contact are libraries and archives per METRO's focus).
University Research Programs
- Columbia CDRS (Center for Digital Research and Scholarship)
- CUNY Graduate Center for Digital Humanities
- NYU M.A. in Archives and Public History Program
- Parsons The New School for Design programs
- Pratt School of Information and Library Science
- Smith College Library - contact initiated, 2 Skype trainings given to 2 new Wikipedia library interns.
- Other University Media, History, Digital Humanities, MLIS Programs, Archives and Preservation programs.
NYC internet groups
- Wireless Harlem/Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association
- Internet Society of New York
Strategy for Engagement[edit]
(Roughly written as a progression and tailored specifically for each partner).
- Identify a point person at an institution interested in promoting Wikipedia internally.
- Initiate a meeting with representatives from multiple institutional departments to talk about glam-wiki, IE: library, archives, digital preservation, education, curatorial.
- Schedule a follow-up meeting or staff Wikipedia editing training to emphasize certain points such as COI guidelines, and documentation.
- Encourage the institution to hold a public event such as an Edit-a-Thon or backstage pass.
- If members of the institution are beginning to edit, assist the institution in developing a GLAM-wiki page and other documentation.
- Tweet, photograph, and post on "This Month in GLAM" about the institution's engagement.
- Identify local and/or remote volunteers for the institutional project.
- Continue to check up on and off wiki about the institution's project
- Encourage active institutions to develop a multi-department Wikipedia or Open Knowledge group or club to talk about OA institutional initiatives.
Evidence of Success in Similar Projects[edit]
Precedent exists for grants funding local, national, and international outreach projects, and for the success of local GLAM partnership coordinators.
- Current Momentum
Wikipedia:GLAM/Metropolitan New York Library Council
- METRO has already begun to build a network of Wikipedians and GLAM-Wikipedians in the library/archives fields in New York City through strategic partnerships, multi-institutional workshops and tours, and community events. METRO's Wikipedian-in-Residence's work has been unique because it is consortium-based, with a large network of potential collaborators already holding membership.
- METRO's projects have increased participation in Wikipedia, especially in the libraries and archives world.
- METRO's projects have increased Wikipedia events and Edit-a-Thons in the New York area, especially in professional sectors.
- METRO's projects have increased article quality and contributed content on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commmons, and WikiSource.
- Recent Edit-a-Thons Organized
- Precedent
- Similar in that WMF funding went to outreach and community development campaign.
- Dominic's position resembles this proposal's position in its affiliation and supervision by the local Wikimedia chapter.
- Lori serves as a point of contact for U.S. institutional engagement in Wikipedia and outreach efforts nationally and has helped developed the GLAM-wiki community portals and pages online, and supported individual projects.
This section is used to identify key risks or threats that would prevent you from achieving your project goals and how you would mitigate those risks and threats.
1. Difficulty in recruiting new volunteers.
Mitigating:
- Choose topical and fun Edit-a-Thon themes to get new volunteers engaged and invite thematic community groups.
- Provide Use-Cases to show Wikipedia's benefit to GLAMS as a way of showcasing resources and fulfilling institutional missions.
- Create a culture of support, acceptance, and support at all events and meetups.
- Provide online support and encouragement and check in with project managers frequently.
2. Teaching the Conflict of Interest guidelines to trainees.
Mitigating:
- Create a local GLAM community so the COI and GLAM guidelines become reinforcing and second-nature to participants.
- Check up on GLAM activity and offer suggestions.
- Seek approval of a COI guideline for every new, GLAM project.
3. Overcoming the Gender gap, and difficulty of gendered online communication.
Mitigating:
- Many librarians and archivists are women, pursue outreach to these institutions yields encouraging new women editors.
- Providing diversity training such as the Ada Initiative "Allies Workshop."
- Encourage and support female leadership.
4. Maintaining Adequate Project Accounting
Mitigating:
- Work with PEG team and other community organizations to share knowledge on measurement and evaluation.
- Designate volunteers for both financial management and reporting through the project period.
- Create event pages and image galleries for each event.
- This strategy is valuable because it is building on previous, existing, and successful outreach projects. Outreach efforts will have a continual focus on incorporating diverse cultural institutions and encouraging the editing of topics relevant to cultures and perspectives currently underrepresented in Wikipedia. This will also encourage the increasing quality of Wikipedia articles, encourage more contributors and active participation, and will focus on giving institutions the tools and understanding to develop Wikipedia projects of their own (financial sustainability). The demand for Wikipedia support is only growing in New York. Such a position will meet the interest and demand with an opportunity for the Wikimedia Foundation to grow its networks of institutional and media support and partnerships.
- If the project will benefit a specific online community, please tell us.
- This project will most directly affect English Wikipedia and GLAMs in the New York area but other projects will also be encouraged and developed including Wikimedia Commons, WikiSource, and WikiData, as well as the campaigns Wikipedia Loves Libraries, and Wiki Loves Monuments. One major benefit of this project is doing outreach with GLAMs and organizations that have previously been out of the scope of my work and obligations as WiR at METRO.
- The project will help recruit new editors, and address the editor retention issue by creating a network of institutions editing Wikipedia in New York that can share information and resources.
- Please provide a brief statement about how the project is related to other work in the Wikimedia movement.
- This project will expand and promote the GLAM community, and hopes to mobilize a longstanding community of institutions engaging in Wikipedia in New York, supporting editor retention.
- It will also contribute to the work of Wikimedia NYC and to the national coordinated GLAM-Wiki US-Consortium efforts.
- Potential Replication of the Project
- The projects will also help spark interest and enthusiasm in GLAM throughout the United States because of the wide influence of New York institutions. It is also a new model for a WiR, being consortium-based, and with successful project documentation, can be replicated in the future. It thus expands the possibilities of how a WiR position can be structured.
- Other benefits to the movement
- The work of the community fellow would also help strengthen the Wikimedia New York City Chapter by expanding projects and engagement in their ongoing activities, and seeking collaboration.
