The Wiki Women Camp (WWC*) proved to be a resounding success, exceeding initial expectations and generating impactful outcomes across multiple areas. Learning through Proactive Engagement: Our decision to engage cohorts well in advance of the event proved to be a valuable learning initiative. This preparatory work ensured focused discussions during the camp, allowing us to optimise the schedule. Rather than revisiting foundational topics related to movement strategy and gender bridging initiatives, we were able to delve deeper into these areas, maximising participant engagement. Solidarity and Inclusion: A heartening and unexpected outcome centred on the strong sense of solidarity among participants. This spirit of collaboration culminated in a transformative discussion around inclusivity within the Wikimedia ecosystem. As a direct result, the event name was thoughtfully changed from Wiki Women Camp to Wiki Women* Camp, signifying a commitment to fostering a more inclusive environment for all underrepresented contributors. Collaboration for Concrete Outcomes: While lively discussions and insightful perspectives were anticipated, the camp fostered a truly collaborative environment that surpassed expectations. Participants actively worked together, leading directly to the creation of a concrete set of recommendations aimed at advancing gender equity within the movement. Steering Committee: A Catalyst for Change: The formation of a dedicated steering committee emerged as a positive development. Organiser impact: While this is an expected outcome of all conferences (to have Wikimedians energised and step forward to take responsibility for the next steps) what surprised us was the scale. We were expecting expressions of interest for WWC* but instead received proposals for steering committee and a complete reimagination of the nature of the WWC* core team. There is a document outlining the next steps in this regard ( link). Partnerships Impact: The Wiki Women Camp (WWC) benefited tremendously from a strategic network of diverse partners, significantly amplifying its reach and impact. This collaborative effort fostered a dynamic and enriching environment for participants. Tech Industry Leaders Joining Forces: We were fortunate to have the support of tech giants like Google and their Women Techmakers program. Their contribution to the "I Am Remarkable" workshop empowered participants with valuable self-promotion skills. Additionally, Pragati from Meta provided invaluable insights, aligning perfectly with the camp's mission to foster technological advancement for women. Academic Excellence and Advocacy: Educational institutions, such as the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad, brought academic rigour to the discussions, creating a stimulating learning environment. Collaboration with NGOs and nonprofits championing women's causes, including FICCI-ILIA, Naz Foundation, and AnitaB.org India, provided a comprehensive understanding of women's issues, empowerment, and advocacy. Solid Foundation and Amplified Communication: Legal expertise from the Software Freedom Law Center ensured a strong foundation for the camp's initiatives. This, unfortunately, led to criticism (non-personal in nature) regarding the perceived lack of a strong organising team and a rigid approach. A lengthy discussion ensued online (link) where we openly addressed the difficulties encountered and our efforts to overcome them. We acknowledge that the absence of a strong LATAM presence could have resulted in a narrower range of viewpoints during discussions, potentially limiting the depth of conversation, diversity of ideas, and networking opportunities. We are committed to learning from this experience and taking steps to be more proactive and engaging with the LATAM community in future endeavours. The Wiki Women Camp served as a catalyst for positive change, fostering a spirit of collaboration and generating impactful initiatives that will shape the future of gender equity within the Wikimedia movement.

The long-term impact of WWC* is anticipated to be transformative, registering positive changes in several key areas. The WWC* team envisions lasting effects in the following five domains: Greater inclusivity: WWC* set out with a primary goal of fostering the inclusion of women contributors. Recognizing the importance of a more expansive approach to inclusivity, the event evolved into WWC*. This broader vision aims to not only include women but also emphasises a greater focus on inclusivity overall. The expected result is an increased participation of women and LGBTQ+ community members, both within the Wikimedia movement and in the broader Movement Strategy process. Increased Participation: A key long-term impact expected is the increased involvement of women and LGBTQ+ community members in both the Wikimedia movement and the Movement Strategy process. By cultivating an inclusive environment and addressing specific community needs, WWC* aims to contribute to a more diverse and participatory landscape within these realms. Content Curation and Addition/Fostering Collaboration and Idea Exchange: While WWC* did not directly engage in content creation, it facilitated a platform for meaningful idea exchange and collaboration. Envisioning Growth: Recognizing the evolving needs of the movement and strategic advancements, the Wiki Women Camp (WWC*) adopted a renewed focus under the theme "Map Up, Rise Up." This theme reflects a commitment to analysing the current landscape and charting a course for future growth. Targeted Approach: To maximise effectiveness, WWC* implemented a two-cohort program. The Strategic Cohort focused on analysing gender disparities within the movement and developing long-term plans for women's engagement. The Capacity Cohort aimed to equip participants with the skills and resources to translate these strategies into actionable initiatives. This structure ensured a focused and results-oriented approach. Engaging with Partners: WWC* recognized the value of collaboration and extended its program beyond discussions solely within the Wikimedia movement. The inclusion of diverse initiatives dedicated to bridging the gender gap and empowering women offered participants a broader perspective on impactful efforts. Pioneering a Regional Event: WWC* marked a significant milestone as the first international event of its kind in the region. By opting for a collaborative model with partner institutions and logistics/hospitality partners, the organising team was able to prioritise program design, learning components, and course corrections. This will involve proactive task completion, ownership and accountability. Allocating additional time for these tasks will minimise last-minute pressures. Refined Collaboration with Partner Organisations: To ensure smooth collaboration, a clearly defined working scope with well documented SOPs will be established with partner organisations. Buffer time: Additionally, extending the timeframe between scholarship confirmations and event dates will facilitate visa and travel arrangements. This will alleviate undue stress on the Camp Organizing Team (CoT) caused by tight timelines arising from grant signing delays. 2. Optimising Team Dynamics: Clearer Role Delegation: We recognize the importance of clearly defined roles and balanced workload distribution. This will ensure that all team members understand their responsibilities, fostering efficient and effective work management. Promoting Global Accountability: While embracing global diversity is a core value, establishing accountability across geographically dispersed teams can be challenging. We are committed to exploring solutions that foster a sense of ownership and responsibility within a global context. 3. Nhu's adept project management and oversight of the strategic cohort, Tila and Masana's profound insights into gender dynamics, Beverly's invaluable support in designing sessions, Yop's impactful exercises, and Rosie's strategic guidance have collectively shaped the event's depth and resonance. A special note of appreciation goes to the Brand team for their assistance in creating a central logo that unifies all aspects related to WikiWomen. Their contributions have left an indelible mark on the overall impact and effectiveness of the event. The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) shoulders the crucial responsibility of fostering goodwill and transparent communication among all stakeholders. Organising a conference is a labour of love, albeit a stressful one, undertaken by dedicated organisers committed to serving the movement. Given the myriad responsibilities associated with conference organisation, frictions among stakeholders are inevitable. Recognizing the potential challenges, it becomes paramount for WMF to implement a strategic or interventional insurance mechanism, akin to financial insurance, to safeguard operations. Identify Reliable Institutional Partners: Place emphasis on finding reliable institutional partners with clearly defined processes and personnel. These partners can offer valuable support in navigating process-related challenges, preventing burnout, and preserving creative energy for organisers. The post-camp engagement plan was shared, where 10 members have signed up. These members will lead the global consultations to execute the plan until the collective is formed and the responsibilities are handed over. We co-designed the WikiWomenHour with the WikiIn Africa team. We are closely working with Wikimania lead for the WikiWomen Summit to co-design the summit as a strategic space to discuss the next plan of action.

Why?: Some bills are yet to be cleared from the WWC account by IIIT-H. Also, we didn’t have to use the money reserved for unforeseen expenses. We did have a buffer of 5 lakhs to offer a seat from LATAM which all of the selected members declined.

As specified in other relevant sections of the report, we intend to continue this engagement until the steering committee is formed and is well capacitated to start functioning, we intend to utilise these funds for the same and for the programmatic activities & outreach in the region. The intention is to use this for a central portal for WikiWomen Collective, Global conversations, swag, travel & other participation support and staff support (if needed for administrative workflow management)
