General information[edit]

  • Title of Proposal: DCW Bhopal Photo Event 2022
  • Username of Applicant: TheAafi
  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Amount awarded: 1180.38
  • Amount spent: 1031.67 USD, 83828.93 INR

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

With a group of four resource persons and local network, it was easy to implement the proposal. Numis Zuhair had formed a local network through his contacts at Madrasa Arabia Masjid Tarjume Wali in Bhopal where headquarters of both the Jamiat Ulama Madhya Pradesh and Rabta Madaris Madhya Pradesh are located. Both the institutions extended support and aided us in locating seminaries/madrassah's as far as possible. Together with local helpers, DCW resource persons travelled across the city and collected relevant images as far as possible.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes, local contacts and connections with authoritative local institutions proved helpful. Had there been no aid from the people of Madrasa Arabia Tarjume Wali Masjid, it would have been difficult for us to reach the target.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

The event was covered by Nadeem, a prominent Urdu language daily of the Madhya Pradesh. There is no e-paper available however a snap of the coverage is available here. It also received coverage from Millat Times, another famous Delhi-based Urdu language online news portal.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Neither agree nor disagree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

N/A

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

In the grant application, the learn priority stated that, "We hope to learn about diversity of content and information related to DCW's theme, through passionate young volunteers, and how better we can support them in continuing their works for the upliftment of Wikimedia's goal", and as such the Bhopal Photo Event did help us in learning a number of things. It helped us to know about the grassroots awareness that the DCW should apply while doing such events in future. It did open ways to develop collaborative ideas related to our theme that we could go for in the city but it appeared that Wikipedia and its sister projects are something not very much known to people - who are the best targets of the DCW. In order to aid this, we learned that short and limited offline workshops are helpful to bring in more people from there.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Yes, there appeared to us certain questions like "What is Wikimedia", is it sort of a surveillance company? We also faced problems while covering female seminaries. We did learn from these issues. There was an idea to make a short pamphlet related to DCW's aims and objectives which highlights the aim of these photo events. We can use such pamphlets to overcome this problem.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

As indicated in the above response, grassroots awareness and training seems necessary, the DCW would apply such ideas and frameworks into application, which can help us bring in a good quality of people, prior to starting the events. For instance, when we told a person about having a session, he said, "what it is, I need to learn it first and then perhaps, we can go forward". As such, it appears that, the DCW has to set up a target to work at specific areas - get in touch with related authorities and do some sort of short awareness related events, before going for events that are bigger in size and impact.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics[edit]

10a. Open Metrics reporting

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.

Open Metrics Summary
Open Metrics Description Target Results Comments Methodology
Thematic images Images to be uploaded on Commons, and subsequently articles improved on several projects 200 346 This was beyond our expectation. The assistance that we received from Madrasa Islamia Tarjume Wali Masjid in this was quite helpful. It looks that we can work up with such ideas more better in future.
