The Change: The change we are aiming to bring through this project is the empowerment and guidance of Wikimedian editors in Kano State. We want to create an environment where editors can thrive, contribute effectively, and increase the quality and quantity of information related to Kano State on Wikimedia projects.

Main Challenges or Problems:

  1. Lack of Awareness and Training: Many potential editors in Kano State are unaware of Wikimedia projects and their potential for contributing knowledge. Additionally, even those who are aware may lack the necessary skills and training to effectively contribute.
  2. Limited Local Content: There is a shortage of locally relevant content about Kano State on Wikimedia projects. This limits the representation of the region's history, culture, and current affairs.
  3. Engagement and Retention: Editors often face challenges in staying motivated and engaged due to a lack of support, community interaction, and recognition for their contributions. This can lead to a decline in active contributors over time.

Approaches to Achieve the Change:

  1. Outreach and Awareness: We will conduct targeted outreach campaigns in Kano State, collaborating with local educational institutions, community organizations, and media outlets. The aim is to raise awareness about Wikimedia projects and their potential for knowledge sharing and collaboration.
  2. Training and Capacity Building: We will organize workshops and training sessions to equip potential editors with the necessary skills to contribute effectively. These sessions will cover topics such as editing basics, reliable sourcing, copyright, and plagiarism.
  3. Content Creation and Improvement: We will actively support and guide editors from Kano State in creating and improving content related to the region. This will involve organizing edit-a-thons, virtual collaborations, and providing resources and mentorship to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the content.
  4. Community Building and Support: We will foster a sense of community among Wikimedian editors in Kano State through regular meetups, online forums, and social media groups. This will create a supportive environment where editors can seek guidance, share experiences, and collaborate on projects.
  5. Recognition and Rewards: To encourage and retain active contributors, we will establish a recognition system that acknowledges the efforts and achievements of editors. This could include highlighting their work on Wikimedia projects, organizing local award ceremonies.

By implementing these approaches, we aim to address the challenges of awareness, training, content scarcity, and community engagement. Ultimately, this project will lead to an empowered and thriving community of Wikimedian editors in Kano State, resulting in a richer and more comprehensive representation of the region's knowledge and culture on Wikimedia projects.
