Folk cultures, characterized by their diverse customs and traditions, serve as a vibrant reflection of communities worldwide. Yet, within these cultural narratives, women's roles as storytellers, artists, and contributors have often been underrepresented. To rectify this historical bias, the global campaign, 'Feminism and Folklore,' emerges as an international writing contest held on Wikipedia, dedicated to documenting folk cultures and women's narratives in folklore. This initiative functions as a bridge between the traditional and contemporary, shedding light on the often-overlooked role of women in the enduring narrative of human tradition.

The primary objective of this project is to bridge the gender gap in the representation of women in Nigerian folklore on Wikipedia. Our focus encompasses comprehensive documentation, representation, and celebration of women contributors, with a specific focus on women folk artists and singers. The project's overarching goal is to create a more inclusive portrayal of cultural heritage on Wikipedia through the thorough documentation of women's narratives in Nigerian folklore. Beyond documentation, a key aspect of this project is the active celebration of women contributors, highlighting their significant achievements and contributions to Nigerian folklore. Additionally, our commitment extends to translating these wikipedia articles into Igbo and Yoruba languages, ensuring wider accessibility and preserving these cultural traditions for future generations.

Through this project, we aim to empower and document the narratives of women in Nigerian folklore, ensuring their stories and experiences receive equitable representation.

The main challenges we address center on the underrepresentation and limited visibility of women in Nigerian Folklore and contributions on Wikipedia. Our goal is to rectify these challenges and create a more inclusive and balanced representation of traditional folklore.

To accomplish these objectives, we will employ two primary approaches:

1. Awareness and Advocacy: Through several approach involving public talks, social media campaigns, and media engagement across the social media platforms of our target participants,we aim to raise awareness and advocate for diverse representation. This includes showcasing the positive impact of women in Nigerian folklore. Our mission is to encourage wider participation, aligning with our goal of amplifying the narratives and contributions of women within Nigerian folklore.
2. Training, Edit-a-thon and Celebration of Women Contributors: Our strategy includes a series of engaging activities such as editing campaigns, workshops, physical and online training sessions, and edit-a-thons. Through these project, we empower, engage and train both new and experienced editors to create high-quality Wikipedia articles highlighting and celebrating the achievements of women in Nigerian folklore. This ensures that their valuable contributions are accessible to a wider public on Wikipedia, aligning with our goal of amplifying underrepresented perspectives and promoting equitable representation in cultural heritage.

Through this project, we aim to engage and train individuals, including women engaged in Nigerian folklore, as well as new and existing Wikimedian editors, in the art of creating, enhancing, and translating Wikipedia articles about Women in Nigerian folklore into Igbo and Yoruba languages. By meticulously documenting their contributions, stories, and experiences, we seek to ensure the appropriate recognition, preservation and documentation of these significant aspects of our cultural heritage. This endeavor will play a vital role in bridging the content gap and ensuring that these narratives, often overlooked, find their rightful place in the digital world.

Following the successful implementation of this project, we expect a significant impact on the representation of women in Nigerian folklore on Wikipedia and the celebration of women contributors of Nigerian folklore. It will contribute to a more balanced, accurate and inclusive portrayal of women in Nigerian folklore. Enriching Wikipedia's content with these essential narratives will foster a deeper understanding of cultural heritage.
