In the contemporary digital age, we stand at an intersection of immense potential and challenges. Platforms like Wikipedia, as part of the vast online knowledge repository, are redefining the dynamics of classroom education. Yet, while it's one thing to have a reservoir of information, it's entirely another to navigate, access, evaluate, and utilize it responsibly, especially when you consider the integration of such resources into AI models and platforms. In 2022, our initiative "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom for Teachers" and "Students" in Kwara State achieved remarkable results: out of 75 secondary school teachers who actively participated in the program, 60 were significantly impacted and certified with an opportunity for a step-down training in 3 secondary schools which resulted in the practical implementation of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom among 45 students in Kwara State. This indicates a growing awareness and engagement level with Wikipedia in educational settings. However, to put these numbers into perspective against Kwara State's vast teacher population, numbering over 20,000 amidst a burgeoning populace of 3,551,000, the challenge ahead is discernible. Our ambition for this next chapter is precise: capacitate 50 more teachers in Kwara State to navigate Wikipedia adeptly. By doing so, we are not merely turning them into better information seekers, but more crucially, into custodians who can guide their students in deciphering authentic information from potential misinformation and creators of Open Education Resources. A vital aspect to underscore is the symbiotic relationship between platforms like Wikipedia and Artifical Intelligence (AI). As AI models, such as ChatGPT, frequently draw upon Wikipedia for their knowledge base, understanding Wikipedia's structure, strengths, and vulnerabilities become paramount. In essence, by understanding and evaluating the content on Wikipedia, students and teachers gain an implicit insight into the functioning of AI bots, fostering a deeper comprehension of the digital ecosystem in the era of Gen AI, especially how Wikipedia can be an ally for students to evaluate the information coming from AI bots like ChatGPT. In conclusion, our mission transcends the traditional boundaries of digital literacy. We aim to instil a comprehensive understanding of Wikipedia as a learning tool in the digital ecosystem, especially in the age of AI. By aligning our objectives with UNESCO's Media and Information Literacy Framework, we commit to equipping Kwara State's teachers and students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital future adeptly.

The Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program in Kwara State 2022 was undertaken by 75 Teachers and 60 Teachers were certified from different areas in Kwara State, The project secured partnerships, recommendations, and approval for the commencement of the local implementation from key stakeholders in the Education sector within and outside Kwara State, at the commencement of the program, most of the participants were neither aware of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework nor aware of the dates set aside to commemorate the Global Media and Information Literacy Week by UNESCO usually held from 24th to 31st October every year. The training resource was also adapted to Yoruba language which helped promote inclusiveness. Some of the challenges we encountered were: 1. Inadequate ICT skills 2. IP address block 3. Absence of some Teachers from the physical meeting. We were able to combat these challenges by assigning facilitators to the Teachers who were not very familiar with ICT. The purpose of this was to help them navigate the internet and help them catch up with their fellow teachers. We also carried out an online meeting to give the teachers an avenue to ask their questions and online meetings were carried out for Teachers who missed the physical meetings, and concerning the IP block, the Teachers were advised to use their personal network, wait out the block period and reboot their network when they were blocked. Some of the key learnings from the previous project were 1. Adequate partnership 2. Teamwork 3. Involving an experienced Resource person 4. Providing adequate resources for the teachers' learning. During the RWC 2022 series of forms were sent out to the teachers to determine their knowledge of the program and the topics surrounding it, and at the end of the program a form was also sent out to evaluate what they have learned. Feedback from teachers was actively collected in the previous iterations of our 'Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom' program 2022. Through surveys, classroom observations, and one-on-one interviews, we gathered valuable input from participating teachers. These feedbacks helped shape the module adequately in several ways such as Content Relevance, Complexity level, Technical support and Integration with their curriculum. Reading Wikipedia in the classroom for secondary school students in Kwara State helped give the Teachers the opportunity to incorporate the lesson plan they made during the RWC 2022 into their classroom. The teachers were given the opportunity to incorporate what they had learned into their classroom. For more information, here's a comprehensive report written to document all the activities of the RWC Nigeria 2022 {https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Reading_Wikipedia_in_the_Classroom_Nigeria/_Program_Report}

What we hope to do differently:

1. Adopting a follow-up initiative to the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program for students in secondary schools in Kwara State.
2. Step-down training by certified teachers
3. Organizing a refresher course for Teachers to broaden their knowledge and increase skills.
4. Invite certified teachers for the RWC 2022 to help mentor the new teachers. (3 certified teachers from various schools will be invited to mentor and supervise the training.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The implementation of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom 2.0 Kwara Nigeria will run for 3 months (Planning: 1st-31st of October, Implementation: 1st November-31st December, and Evaluation: 1st January-31st January ). To guide 50 selected teachers on how to effectively use and incorporate Wikipedia in their classrooms involves a combination of strategies that promote critical thinking, information literacy, and responsible use of Wikipedia and other online Open Education Resources. The activities developed to be delivered as part of the strategies will include; Strategy 1: Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Kwara Nigeria Community Expansion and Engagement. Strategy 2: Wikipedia Tailored Teacher Training. Strategy 3: Content Diversification and Curriculum Alignment. Strategy 4: Mentoring Program

Strategy 1: Community Expansion and Engagement- Our foremost priority underpins the expansion of the "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" community of Teachers which currently has 68 members in Kwara State. We recognize that creating a sustainable impact is not merely about isolated training but nurturing an ecosystem where knowledge transfer and evolution are continuous. To this end, we're fortifying our partnership with the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet). Furthermore, our ongoing collaborations with the Kwara State Government, Ministry of Education, Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), along with Principals and Teachers of secondary schools in Kwara State, represent a holistic approach to integrating Wikipedia into the classroom fabric. Our ambition stretches beyond just numbers; by recruiting 50 more teachers, we aim to weave a dense network where educators can engage, share experiences, challenge paradigms, and jointly devise best practices. This platform is not just about leveraging Wikipedia today but evolving with it as it grows and transforms. But the vision isn't confined to classrooms alone. We have actively seen the participation of teachers who were part of the first implementation in other Wikimedia projects and campaigns such as Wikicred boot camp for information professionals in Nigeria, Building open Culture Community for sustainable open licence practices in Nigeria, EveryBookitsReaders campaign, Celtic Knot Kwara, Africa Day campaign, among others whilst actively fostering ties with other local Wikimedia affiliates and informal groups, ensuring a dual purpose. First, these affiliations guarantee our community stays abreast of the latest advancements and guidelines from the Wikimedia universe. Second, they open doors for our trained teachers to remain actively engaged with the local Wikimedia community, furthering their journey beyond the program. This interconnection ensures that RWiC isn't an endpoint but a gateway to broader, sustained community engagement, cementing the program's longevity and relevance in the dynamically evolving digital landscape.

Strategy 2: Tailored Teacher Training for OERs and Classroom Activities Building on the foundation laid by the "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom (RWiC)" curriculum, our Strategy 2 delves deep into the integration of Wikipedia as an everyday classroom tool. We are not merely introducing teachers to the platform; our emphasis is on transforming it into an instructional ally. Central to this strategy are specialised workshops that enlighten educators on Wikipedia's strengths and limitations. Our program will offer advanced training on media and information literacy, emphasising the art of discerning credible sources and interpreting content contextually. Moreover, teachers will be guided on formulating lesson plans that incorporate Wikipedia content, making learning immersive and contextually relevant for students. Through these workshops, the primary objective is to equip educators with the proficiency to mould Wikipedia into bespoke Open Educational Resources (OERs) suited to their unique pedagogical needs.

Strategy 3: Wikipedia Editing Skills and Curriculum Alignment While Strategy 2 focuses on the assimilation of Wikipedia content into teaching, Strategy 3 shifts the spotlight to active content creation and editing. Utilising the RWiC curriculum as our anchor, this strategy empowers teachers to shape Wikipedia content aligning with their specific curriculum topics. To translate this vision into actionable skills, we have planned a series of activities under the banner of "Wikipedia Workshop Activities Toolkit": Fact-Checking Exercises: Practical sessions driving teachers to verify Wikipedia content using multiple authoritative sources, nurturing critical analysis. Editing Assignments: Hands-on assignments immersing participants in Wikipedia editing. Through real-world tasks like citation addition, Wikilinks, and more, teachers appreciate the intricacies of Wikipedia and the ethics of content creation. Discussion and Reflection: A platform for educators to exchange their Wikipedia integration experiences, sowing the seeds for iterative improvement. Ongoing Learning: Wikipedia is dynamic, and so our program instils in teachers the need for continuous learning, ensuring they are always in sync with the platform's evolution.

Strategy 4: Mentoring Program Duties of the Certified Teachers

Orientation Session: Introduction to mentor-mentee pairs.

Mentor-Mentee Matching: Pairing new participants with certified teachers based on subject expertise and grade level with support from the Facilitators. Mentor-mentee pairs introduced through a virtual meeting or webinar.

Regular Mentorship Meetings: Monthly virtual meetings between facilitators, mentors and mentees. Discussions about challenges faced and effective strategies employed. Q&A sessions for mentees to seek guidance on specific classroom situations.

Resource Sharing: Mentors share curated resources, lesson plans, and teaching materials used successfully in previous programs. Mentees provided access to a shared online repository of relevant articles, activities, and educational tools.

Classroom Observations: Mentors conduct virtual or in-person classroom observations to provide personalised feedback to mentees. Mentors offer constructive suggestions for improvement and highlight successful teaching methods.

Peer Learning Workshops: Periodic virtual workshops where mentors and mentees share their classroom experiences.

Feedback and Evaluation: Regular feedback sessions where mentees provide input on the effectiveness of the mentorship program. Program organizers assess the impact of mentoring on classroom engagement and teachers learning outcomes.

Closure and Recognition: Closing ceremony where mentors and mentees share their experiences and achievements. Certificates of completion and recognition for mentors acknowledging their valuable contribution to the program.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

In Kwara State, a significant number of educators remain unacquainted with Wikipedia's depth and scope as a vital Open Educational Resource (OER) to enhance media and Information literacy skills. These teachers, pivotal in shaping young minds, often lack the skills to efficiently harness Wikipedia for their classrooms. Addressing this, our initiative provides tailored training, enabling educators to both identify and address content gaps that pertain directly to their teaching curriculum. By imparting this knowledge, we’re not only turning teachers into adept users of Wikipedia but also motivating them to become contributors. In doing so, they bring to the forefront underrepresented content, ensuring a more holistic representation of knowledge. As each teacher interfaces with an estimated 400 students annually, we foresee this initiative amplifying the media and information literacy skills of over 20,000 students in the next year alone. The ripple effect of this program transcends the individual classroom. We're cultivating an entire generation of students who are not just passive consumers of digital content but discerning evaluators and potential contributors. Through these endeavors, we're ensuring that both educators and students actively partake in combating knowledge inequities.

Target Participants and Community: Our primary focus is on Junior and Senior Secondary School Teachers from selected secondary schools in Kwara State.

Engagement Strategy Before and During the Activities: Our engagement approach is rooted in collaboration and community outreach. We'll be liaising with key stakeholders such as the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet), the Kwara State Government, and various educational institutions in Kwara State to ensure optimal outreach and program effectiveness. Promotional tactics will include both traditional (posters) and digital methods (social media), combined with hands-on outreach programs in schools. During the project's duration, our team will play an active role in facilitating training sessions, ensuring participants understand the intricacies of Wikipedia and its sister platforms. Emphasis will be laid on responsible editing to prevent inadvertent misinformation or vandalism.

Engaging Past Participants as Mentors: Incorporating feedback and lessons learned from other regions, we recognise the value of involving past program participants. We will be inviting minimum of 3 certified RWiC Teachers to join as "mentor-teachers." They will share their firsthand experience and practical insights which will be invaluable, offering newer participants real-world examples of integrating Wikipedia in classrooms. These mentors will join various sessions, sharing their experiences, challenges faced, and successful implementation strategies.

Post-Activity Engagement and Follow-up: After the program concludes, a feedback survey will be disseminated to gather participant insights, ensuring continuous improvement in future editions. One-on-one interviews with certified teachers will further provide deeper insights. To ensure sustained engagement, we'll nurture the existing "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom (RWC) Kwara community." Through this platform, educators can share experiences, seek advice, and discuss innovative ways to incorporate Wikipedia in their teaching methodologies. Additionally, they'll be encouraged to participate in various Wikimedia events in Kwara State, ensuring their continuous learning and engagement with the broader Wikimedia community.

We will leverage the existing partnership with UNESCO, Kwara State Government, SUBEB, Teaching Service Commission, Proprietors and Principals of schools, and build new partnerships with new schools to be trained, and other related educational institutions in Kwara State. This project will be part of the initiation of our non-profit Organisation “Learnovation Network Foundation” with Registration Number 7113122 whose one of its objectives is to provide mentorship and guidance programs to empower individuals with the guidance and support necessary to navigate their personal and professional journeys successfully.

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Our work within this proposal revolves around assessing educators' understanding, readiness, and long-term engagement with Wikipedia as a teaching tool in Kwara State. We have identified three main domains of inquiry: Awareness, Perception, and Readiness: Objective: Assess the awareness and understanding of teachers in Kwara State regarding UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework, Open Education Resources, and Wikipedia. Questions: Are the teachers familiar with the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Framework? Do they recognize and value Wikipedia as an Open Education Resource? What are their perceptions of Wikipedia in relation to classroom education? How does this perception influence their readiness and enthusiasm to incorporate Wikipedia in their curriculum? Training Effectiveness and Implementation: Objective: Gauge the efficacy of the training modules in addressing the needs and expectations of the educators. Questions: Were the training materials clear and comprehensive? Did the modules help teachers understand the practicality of incorporating Wikipedia in the classroom? How well did the training program align with the time commitments and structural expectations of the teachers? How many teachers felt adequately equipped to use Wikipedia post-training, both within and outside the classroom setting? Sustainable Engagement and Impact: Objective: Understand the long-term implications of the program concerning educator engagement and classroom outcomes. Questions: Which strategies were most successful in retaining educators within the Wikimedia community? What is the observable impact on student engagement and the improvement of media and information literacy skills post-program implementation? How can we measure the lasting effects of the program on teachers' consistent usage of Wikipedia as an educational tool?

In addition to the quantitative metrics of tracking the number of teachers who complete all three modules and craft lesson plans integrating Wikipedia as an instructional resource, we will employ qualitative methods to delve deeper into the program's impact. Specifically, we will utilize open-ended surveys and interviews to ascertain the knowledge and insights teachers glean from the program. This nuanced understanding will not only gauge the depth of their learning but also highlight areas of improvement and potential directions for future iterations of the program. Our aim is to ensure that the learning isn't merely superficial; we want to understand the transformative effects of the program on the teachers' pedagogical approaches and their perspective on the integration of Wikipedia in classroom practices. Subsequently, in line with our commitment to transparency and community engagement, we plan to disseminate these findings via Diff, ensuring that our learnings benefit the larger community. With the program's completion, we anticipate that at least 35 teachers will meet the requisite benchmarks and earn certification from the Wikimedia Education Team. The performance of teachers' participation will be assessed through assignments assigned by the project team, drafting of lesson plans, etc. which will be graded and sent to the Wikimedia Education team for review and those who pass will be issued a certificate as certified trainers. I will use the Outreach Dashboard to track and assign articles and items to the Teachers. It will also be used to measure some project metrics such as number of participants, number of articles created/improved, number of references added to articles, article views amongst others.
