There are different types of creativity taking place in different parts of Nigeria. Many of these creative abilities are traditional creations. They include traditional music, art, sculpture, dance, dresses, paintings, masquerades, traditional make up etc. Each of these creative works have different tools and equipment used to produce it. They also depict different values in the different traditional setting where they are produced and used. Nigeria have over 200 languages and tribes with huge diversity in culture. Each of these people have some creative works that are unique to them. Some of these creative works or the process of making some of these creative works are traditionally protected and may not be easily made available to none indigens and in some cases, not every indigen will have access to some of them. Many custodians of these creative works and repository of the skills for making these works are dying due to age. Unfortunately, the advent of westernisation in Africa which came with civilization is discouraging the younger one to learn and take over from the older ones. Consequently, these creativities are not being sustained. Many of them have not been documented or digitized. The effect is that if these creations and the process of making some of them are not preserved now, they may become extinct in the near future. Wiki For Senior Citizens Network want to organise photo walks and edit a thons to capture, digitize and upload in Wikimedia commons different creative abilities in different cultures of Nigeria. As senior citizens, many of us have the reach to the elders and leaders of different communities to obtain a bye-in by these communities to allow us document some of these indigenous creative contents and the process of making them. We will hold meetings with some of the leaders of these communities and thereafter hold photo walk and interview sessions to get some of the contents. We will also attend some cultural ceremonies and events where some of these contents will be captured. We will also visit some places in different parts of the country where these creative works are produced or processed to capture the processes. All these media contents will be uploaded in Wikimedia commons in an edit a thon.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We intend to carry out this project as part of the Wiki Loves Africa 2024 campaign. We will first hold a meetup to train and fully sensitize members on the project. The meeting will be a hybrid one. it will hold in Abuja and members who are not in Abuja will connect online. Presentations/discussions in the meeting will include

  • A talk on Wiki Love Africa and more specifically the theme of the 2024 campaign which is on Africa Create
  • A training from a seasoned photographer on the use of cameras for photography during the programme
  • A training on Wikimedia Commons which will refresh the knowledge for old members and teach new member how to edit and add content in Wikimedia Commons. There will also be a general talk on Wikipedia
  • Planning on how the photo walks will be carried out across the country. This will involve setting out different groups that will concentrate on different locations and tribes, a general brief on how the different group will set up meetings with the relevant local leaders for the photo walks, discussions on possible challenges and how they could be addressed, agreeing on timelines for every group etc
  • Mobilizing other members who are not participating in the group photo walk to identify different places in their various localities and attend different cultural events and performances where they can capture quality pictures of different creative activities
  • Developing and harmonizing a method for continuous collaboration and share of experiences by all the participating groups and individuals throughout the project which will include online and physical meetings

After the edit a thon, the group will commence the process of setting up meetings with different host communities for the photo walk. There will be a minimum of 4 groups made up of 4 persons in each group. We hope to have more than 4 groups. The group will meet with different local leaders or proprietors of different craft centres where these creative works are produced or kept and arrange for a period for the photo walk. Also, other individuals who are not participating in group will commence reaching out to arrange for photo walks in their areas.

Each group and participating member will continue with the photo walks as arrangements are made in the different meetings. There are also some places that may not require a meeting. Photo walks in these areas will commence soon after the first meeting. Members will continue to be encouraged to capture quality pictures of different creative activities in their environment. After all the photo walks, there will be an edit a thon for members to upload the pictures and videos to Wikimedia commons
