A lot of Wikimedia activities have been carried out across Northern Nigeria, but some areas are still yet to be covered. Thus, that’s our user group’s main aim, to reach the places that are yet to be reached; the minorities; and the underrepresented. Plateau/Jos is a state in Northern Nigeria, with diversity in ethnic groups and cultures. Yet, there are little or no Wikimedia activities in the region. This spurred this user group (after careful observation) to conduct our first event in the region with the sole aim of creating Wikimedia awareness and engaging some major languages on Wikipedia. Three major languages in the region are Birom, Gbayi, and Nupe. We will focus on teaching them how to contribute to Wikipedia and create new language Wikipedias for these major languages.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Our major aim is to create Wikimedia awareness in the region, with the primary aim of amplifying Wikimedia's mission and vision to the local communities in the region. The above aims can be achieved through the following objectives.

a). In-person awareness campaigns: this is a suitable approach, especially in creating awareness for the first time in the region; as there would be a lot of questions and the organizers will be available to answer them directly. We will use Wikimedia banners, flyers, and customized Wikimedia t-shirts to create effective awareness in the region. We will also organise face-to-face trainings for the local communities

b). Online campaign: this is particularly important in reaching out to the wider communities; since we cannot reach every angle at once. We will use social media to reach out to wider communities in the region. We will organise several other online trainings to improve participants’ experience and we will add particpants to our user group’s social media groups on Telegram and Whatsapp to keep them aware and updated about Wikimedia activities.

c). Collaboration: From experience, we observed that Wikimedia activities are much more effective through partnerships and collaborations. We will collaborate with the local community organisations in the region to make our campaign more effective.

d). New Language Wikipedias: we will guide participants to open new language projects on Wikipedia. We will also sort for those present on Wikipedia (like Nupe Wikipedia) and train them on how to improve them with vital articles.

e). Editathon: we will organise editathon among participants to encourage contributions and a competitive/winning ability among participants

f). Fan Clubs: we will encourage minor languages to open a Wiki fan club

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

The target participants are people from Jos Plateau. The major ethnic groups in the region (Birom, Gbayi, and Nupe). We will engage participants before the event by reaching out to some participants from the region. Creating collaboration with some local communities in the region based on our aims, and deciding the best locations to carry out our in-person events in the region. We will keep participants active on Wikimedia after the event by adding them to our user group’s pages both on-wiki and social media.
