Kano is among the location where the most of the Hausa Wikipedia editors are belong but most of these editors are male while the Wikipedia is a project which where the male and female have a full right to contribute with their ideas by sharing and acquiring the different knowledge. Therefore, also the Hausa Wikipedia has been dominated by the following challenges or problems.

  • Male domination: Hausa Wikipedia has been dominated by male editors and male perspectives, leading to significant gaps in coverage of topics related to women and gender issues.
  • Inaccuracy:Gender bias also lead to inaccuracies on Hausa Wikipedia. For example, the articles which is written from a male perspective, it may not accurately reflect the experiences of women in that field of Wikipedia.
  • Biases in content: The gender gap on Hausa Wikipedia means that articles about women and women's issues are often underrepresented or misrepresented. This can lead to biases in the content, with male perspectives and experiences being overrepresented.
  • Lack of diversity: The gender gap on Hausa Wikipedia also means that there is a lack of diversity in the editors and contributors to the project. This can result in a limited range of perspectives and experiences being represented, which can further perpetuate biases in the content.
  • Incomplete coverage: The gender gap on Hausa Wikipedia also lead to incomplete coverage of important topics related to women and gender equality, which can perpetuate stereotypes and limit access to accurate information.

Learning and metrics[edit]

17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The followings are what I hope to learn from this project:

  1. How many women are currently editing Wikipedia in Kano, and how has this changed over time? This will help me measure the impact of my outreach efforts and identify areas where I need to focus more attention.
  2. What are the main barriers that prevent women from participating in Wikipedia in Kano, and how can these be addressed? By identifying the specific challenges that women face, I can develop targeted strategies to overcome them.
  3. Are women who edit Wikipedia in Kano less likely to have their contributions accepted or recognized compared to men, and if so, why? This will help me understand whether there are gender biases in the review process and identify ways to address them.
  4. How effective are different outreach strategies (e.g. workshops, social media campaigns) in increasing women's participation in Wikipedia in Kano? By testing different approaches, I can identify the most effective strategies for reaching and engaging women in the community.
  5. How can we ensure that the content on Wikipedia is more representative of diverse perspectives and experiences, including those of women in Kano? This will help ensure that the impact of my work extends beyond just increasing the number of women who edit Wikipedia, but also improves the overall quality and inclusivity of the content on the platform.

By collecting data on these and other learning questions, I hope to gain valuable insights into the impact of my project and identify areas for improvement. This will help me refine my approach and ensure that my work is having the greatest possible impact on the community I am serving.
