USA chapter?

How come there seems to be no USA chapter? It seems like it would be among the first to be formed, seeing as Wikipedia is based there. BlastOButter42 06:06, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

That is a very difficult question to answer, there have been some proposals to start up a Wikimedia USA and even a Wikimedia United States Chapters Council. I think what has been agreed now is that the United States is too vast in size and culturally different in many places (coupled with other reasons) for there to be a "Wikimedia USA" at this point in time. We currently have two state/metro-based chapters in the making: Wikimedia Pennsylvania and Wikimedia New York City, you are welcome to take a look and "sign-up" with them if you are interested/live near. This is of course, an unofficial response from someone not on ChapCom. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 13:28, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Abuse of Admn Tools on Hindi Wikipedia.

At least three Admns are involved and confirmed in Abuse of Admn tools in Hindi Wikipedia and other three are in lines of Abuse of Admn Tools. Almost all Admns on www.hi.wikipedia.org are knwoing facts and this matter should be bought to entrie world to safe guard wikipedia The Free Encylopedia. I signed as vkvora. Vkvora2001 17:06, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

The concrete reason for my question is that, I might suggest to form a chapter for Europe if that was acceptable. I believe, such a chapter:

  • dealing with EU offices, e.g. for fundraising,
  • taking special care, and organizing support, for projects in minority and cross-border languages,
  • generally furthering multilingualism,
  • helping out in areas where there is no local chapter yet,
  • possibly being the chapter to join for people from small nations as long as there are too few participants to form a national chapter,

has some potential witch would be hard to meet with national chapters alone. If you, the committee, agree, let me know, and I shall further persue the idea. Greetings. --Purodha Blissenbach 16:25, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Would this be similar to the idea of a Wikimedia United States Chapters Council, because in the US they have state-based chapters. Greeves (talk contribs) 21:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
It might (in part) develop in this direction, but the initial intent is not to form an entity "on top" of the national chapters, or one where national chapters should become members - though that would not be ruled out - but another chapter rather being parallel to, or merely on the same hierachy level as, national chapters. --Purodha Blissenbach 18:59, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

odd query

via Kylu: could you guys please give a look and take care of it? User talk:Aphaia#Odd query on WMF boardvote server. Thanks! --Aphaia 05:47, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia España

Hi. I guess this is the right place for this. We need some help in our discussions regarding Wikimedia España (spain, in preparation). It's been already 7 months of mailing lists but we still don't agree on some aspects of the bylaws. In fulfilling these bylaws may questions arise. In particular: how does WMF expect to be referred to in the text, and where (objectives section? don't care?). What is the precise link and type of relationship between WMF and WM-es? In the link above there is all the information that has been produced so far, including the Bylaws draft (Borrador de Estatutos).

As I told onthe mailing list, there is no expectation as to how the WMF should be referred to in the text. I would suggest however to make it very clear, for legal purposes, that Wikimedia España is supporting the projects of the WIkimedia Foundation and its mission, while still making clear that the chapter is an independant organisation (it's important that the Wikimedia Foundation's liability does not extend outside the US, and having chapters that would be designed as "subsidiaries" would endanger that).
The precise link between chapter and Foundation is 1) shared objectives & mission 2) legal independance of one and the other (one is not responsible for the other) 3) WMFoundation allows chapter to use the trademark. I think that's it. :-) notafish }<';> 12:54, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, very clear. I just saw your message in the list. Gaianauta 15:11, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

I still have a question: we soon will be ready with the Bylaws. Do you expect an English-translated version of the whole thing before going through it? To whom (and how) should it be be send to? Gaianauta 15:11, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi again. I just realised the answer to the english translation is here. So, I only need answer to the submission thing. Gaianauta 20:33, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
The bylaws should probably be submitted to chaptercommittee-l AT wikimedia POINT org. Cbrown1023 talk 21:10, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Registered office

Is the address of the registered office of the Foundation the same as that of the Registered Agent? (a point for the Statutes of the (hopefully near) future Wikipedia España) Physchim62 16:52, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

No, it is very different. The office of the Wikimedia Foundation is on the "Postal address" part of Contact us (specifically, Template:Foundation address). The registered agent is a legal item (Registered agent) which you only need to worry about if you are going to sue us or something. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 20:46, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
I wasn't planning on suing the Foundation, no—apart from anything else, it doesn't have enough money to make it worthwhile! :P Thanks for the info. Physchim62 17:03, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

'terms run till May 31st 2008'

I presume this has been extended? - could someone in the know update accordingly! cheers, Privatemusings 02:10, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Actually no. The terms have not been extended, but we have not gotten to renewing the members or their terms. We will be doing so shortly. If you are interested, or know anyone who might be, we will definitely be looking for some new blood. notafish }<';> 08:34, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
well I am interested, actually... certainly enough to want to find out a bit more... - you may be aware of my somewhat controversial wiki-history, so maybe a black-ball might come from somewhere.. but I've read up on ChapComm a bit now, and feel it's something that I might actually be able to help with... cheers, Privatemusings 23:07, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Since members of the Chapters committee will be included in the Board soon, this needs to be extended or new members appointed as soon as possible..since a new Board chair will be appointed during the wikimania in Egypt in 9 days..--Cometstyles 23:17, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Never ever has it been question to appoint members of the chapters committee to the board of trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation. The changes in the WMF bylaws only stipulate that the "chapters" will be selecting 2 board members. As a reminder, the Chapters committee is not a representation of chapters, but a WMF board appointed committee. As such, the members of the Chapters committee will not take part in that selection, unless they are themselves part of a chapter or decide to propose themselves as board member for the WMF. Best. notafish }<';> 06:32, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

<- any news on this? anything I can do? :-) Privatemusings 05:50, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

just a friendly poke on the above again :-) Privatemusings 10:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
It's great that this is moving! - I've sent an email through to the list, and we'll see how it pans out.... :-) Privatemusings 01:14, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
sent another idea / note over too :-) Privatemusings 23:49, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

bit of re-organisation...

I thought I might go through quite a few of the pages relating to the Chapters committee and do some tidy up - things like the 'News' section are rather out of date, and I figure the place could just generally do with a bit of attention.... these will be sort of medium sized changes, but essentially cosmetic / filing work... I'll leave this here for a day or two just to make sure that someone else hasn't had the same idea and would rather me hold off... cheers, Privatemusings 04:26, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

I think this is a good idea, but let me suggest that first you should update the page with up-to-date data and then start on any redesign project. --Dami 17:52, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

yeah - that's a good call... I think there will be movement on this during October... :-) Privatemusings 06:33, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
made a good start :-) Privatemusings 05:36, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, its much better now. I would suggest including the IRC nicknames of the members (it's not obvious with everybody), and possibly the usual time when one should expect any member to be in the channel. --Dami 14:06, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia UK (v2)

We're in the process of forming a new chapter in the UK and have just sent ChapCom a copy of our proposed constitution (see email copied here).

Would it be possible to get confirmation that ChapCom have received this email and are considering it, and what kind of timescale there is for them getting back to us? Many thanks. AndrewRT 23:02, 18 October 2008 (UTC) (Secretary, Wikimedia UK (proposed))

Chapcom has received your constitution and are actively considering it. Ideally we will have some kind of response to you within the next few days. I'll poke the committee right now and make sure people are paying attention to it. --Whiteknight (meta) (Books) 14:21, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Many thanks whiteknight; I'll update our Board when we meet on Tuesday. AndrewRT 20:16, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Spain Wikimedia

hi there, i live in spain , i speak french , spanish and english and somme japanese , i dont find any chapter for spain so i am very surprise. can i create the chapter for spain or europe ??. please contact me on my mail ludovico.lopez@gmail.com . I think that we have a lot of ground work to do to spread knowledge worldwide, an example of the USA elections in where Internet has spread information like never before, this is a new revolution if is use in a good way to build up comunication between people and understanding of cultural diferences, the USA has the sense of a Nation, europe should do the same and working boards between local associations all over europe should be the step forward to use the internet as a social revolution. knowledge and information spread using wikipedia is a excelent tool to move on social changes. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.45.132.230 (talk)

Canadian Wikimedias

Hello. There is a discussion on fr.wikipedia about forming Wikimedia Quebec, and they are trying to figure out whether you allow more than one chapter from the same country. If both they and Wikimedia Canada get together a critical mass to propose a chapter, what would happen? --Arctic.gnome 03:39, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

It can't happen. You can't have two chapters with conflicting boundaries. You can read Sub-national chapters while we wait for someone from ChapCom to comment. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 14:56, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
