Talk:IRC/Migrating to Libera Chat

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Template:Channel[edit]

Hi. {{Channel}} may need to be updated to point to Libera Chat, but I am not sure when would be the most appropriate. Just a note that we may need to keep this in mind. Killiondude (talk) 16:46, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

TLS information[edit]

I've added a line about Libera Chat enforcing the use of TLS1.2 or greater, whereas Freenode allowed TLS1.0 or greater. I don't think this sentence is particularly non-techie, so I'd appreciate it if someone can reword this a bit :) Thanks, stwalkerster (talk) 18:57, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I added a note that the way to figure out if this is your issue is to try connecting on plaintext. And I moved it into the "Creating an account" section, since that's when people are most likely to run into it. Otherwise LGTM. Legoktm (talk) 18:22, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Channel listing[edit]

Considering the new (draft?) policy is concerned with "polluting the channel list results", maybe the instructions could suggest to also add +s so that the migrated channels are not listed any more. Nemo 08:33, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Added. Though it seems the policy "draft" was reverted... Legoktm (talk) 18:18, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User flags[edit]

It was noted on #conservancy that:

nurupo> btw, instead of removing invited one-by-one one can clear them all with `/msg ChanServ CLEAR #channel BANS I`

Dropped nicknames[edit]

My nickname on the previous channel was dropped (I don't use IRC that much any more), so it's currently impossible for me to re-obtain a Wikimedia cloak through the /msg wmopbot libera procedure. Should I wait until the current migration is completed? Or is there any other possibility? Sannita - not just another it.wiki sysop 22:19, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you'll have to wait a bit, the normal cloak procedure isn't ready yet. Legoktm (talk) 07:16, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Libera webchat avalaible[edit]

https://web.libera.chat/ is now mentioned in https://libera.chat/guides/clients#connecting-without-installing-anything. You may wish to add it to the list. Thanks, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 15:48, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IRC for newbies[edit]

Most of the time when newbies ask how to join IRC, they are asked « what is your client ». But newbies most of the tine dont know what « a client » is. They can’t make the difference between channel, server, client and dont know what to enter when they are asked to gill out these fields (what about the « port » field?). It would be useful to explain: -what is a client - give advice on which one to choose - make a stop by step tutorial with print screens to explain exactly what to do (1 google « name od client » 2 download by clicking here 3 open and ect - make an online training during on « office hour »? - explain witb concrete examples how to fill out the fields for each step

As everybody is moving to libera chat I guess it would be perfect timing.

Please ping me if you do any of these things as I am still struggling after 5 years on something as simple as that. Nattes à chat (talk) 05:32, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why can’t the WMF host its own IRC servers?[edit]

We host the ninth-most-popular website on the internet, more popular than Twitter or Netflix. Explain why we need to rely on a third-party IRC host, without saying any variation of “every other FOSS project uses it”. Imagine if the WMF was just a few people running a listserv, and the actual wikis were on Wikia or Miraheze… 2001:569:BD7D:6E00:C1D:68D5:3710:70BF 20:02, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Technically speaking, the WMF could run its own IRC servers, but I don't think it really makes sense for us to do so. Part of the advantage of being on Libera Chat and formerly Freenode is that plenty of other ideologically aligned free knowledge/software projects are also on that network and it's incredibly simple to cross-pollinate by just joining another channel. I think being in a shared space like that is valuable and something we don't want to lose. If we were to more fully adopt something federated like Matrix where you don't need to worry about that, then I think it would make sense to run it under our domain name like Mozilla/GNOME/KDE/etc. do. Legoktm (talk) 05:53, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in order to keep the IRC channels independient of Wikimedia, them could run under ToolForge rather than the WMF serevers. --Amitie 10g (talk) 03:45, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Technically WMF does host IRC servers, they show the feeds for the wikis, we just don't run conversation IRCs. It makes perfect sense to me to use someone else's setup where we can, and not have to have staff manage more things, and more servers, and all the aspects of running this speciality software. Let staff run core business tools, and utilise other available software as required.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:03, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
