Request (or require?) researchers applying for access to Wikimedia systems/ data to supply an ORCID iD[edit]

DarTar, LZia and Jmorgan, what do you think? We could add this to the criteria for WMF support/endorsement. --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 00:53, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

+1. I'm really excited by this proposal, and am able to help out with actually getting the word out to academic circles. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:03, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Halfak (WMF): I think that would be reasonable. Assuming we're only requiring ORCHID for formal collaborators, we can just add this step to the current MOU process with minimal additional coordination cost. Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 18:10, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That would be good. I've added a column and sample entry to the /Collaborators page. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:23, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just made an edit to add some ORCIDs for my collaborators and messaged one who doesn't seem to have an ORCID yet. I'll bring this up at our next documentation sprint too so that we can get these things recorded in the table. Pigsonthewing, any other places you'd like to see these IDs posted/linked other than out /Collaborators page? --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 16:51, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Halfak (WMF): Thank you. I think they should be used on individual research pages (for example Research:Peer Production and the Urban-Rural Divide); the individuals' user pages, on each project where they edit (if any), per en:Wikipedia:ORCID; and, of course, on each paper they publish. Perhaps we should have a Wikidata item about each researcher, and each paper, also? In which case, P496 is the one to use on the former, for ORCID iDs. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:12, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just added an orcid parameter to {{Template:Investigator}}. Special:Diff/16430894 I'm not sure how we'll get the historic studies linked, but we can use this from now on to make sure that investigators have an orcid listed when they appear as authors of an on-wiki study document. --Halfak (WMF) (talk) 18:07, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The column has just been removed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 08:58, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Andy Mabbett, I put it back and confirmed with Leila that she approved of the solution. :) --EpochFail (talk) 22:31, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to be switching back and forth between roles. I'm not working now, so I'm EpochFail, but when I'm working, I'm Halfak (WMF). --EpochFail (talk) 22:32, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@EpochFail and Halfak (WMF): Thank you, whichever hat you're wearing ;-) Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:44, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unified login with orcid[edit]

Just a note that the sister project proposal for a new journal hosting platform is nearing completion (see technical features wishlist). If there is still interest in enabling people to generate a unified Wikimedia login based on their ORCID ID I'd be interested to chat. When on-boarding new users, it could also ask if they have an ORCID and auto-generate an initial userpage with basic data from their ORCID page. We are having an increasing number of users that already have an ORCID account but leave their userpages blank. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 04:37, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
ping @Pigsonthewing, Dario (WMF), LZia (WMF), Jmorgan (WMF), Halfak (WMF), and I JethroBT (WMF):

I came across the phabricator task associated with this page (T136943). I've updated it a little. Has there been any other movement relevant to this on phabricator since the ticket was lodged? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 07:11, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Pigsonthewing, Dario (WMF), LZia (WMF), Jmorgan (WMF), Halfak (WMF), and I JethroBT (WMF): The Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020 afford the possibility for some furthering of this project. Feel free to edit this proposal: Community_Wishlist_Survey_2020/Wikiversity/Autopopulate_userpage_starting_info_from_ORCID. Perhaps could be re-titled as 'greater integration with ORCID' or similar. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 10:52, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DarTar:: see above as I"m not sure if you check Dario_(WMF) actively.
T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo) thanks for the ping.
I reviewed the current draft of your proposal. (I won't be changing it directly as I'm not fully informed on this front.) I like options 1 and 4 in your proposal the best. (authority control template or allowing users to more easily associate their Wikimedia identity with ORCID if they choose to.). My initial reaction to option 5 is that someone should do a basic privacy check to see if it's feasible at all given the privacy commitments we have. One question: have you considered having an option where a Wikidata item is populated for the person and ORCID is added as an identifier? (Of course, this may need Wikidata community buy-in.) I'm asking this because to me the best place to capture the ORCID ID is in Wikidata. Once it's there, we can pull that information wherever we need it on the projects. --LZia (WMF) (talk) 01:39, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
style="color: black; background-color: orangered;" align=center|-2 Yes, there used to be a tool (https://tools.wmflabs.org/sourcemd) that could do that, though it's been offline for a few months now. It used to pull employment and publication data from ORCID to wikidata but not the biography, websites, country, keywords, or membership & service (some of which could be useful starting info on the userpage).T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 01:53, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Updating ORCID with Wikipedia entries you authored[edit]

Hi, I am looking for ways to integrate Wikipedia edits/new articles I authored into my ORCID profile, other than manual introduction one at a time. I see in the proposal ways to use ORCID on Wikipedia, but nothing on the reverse. Any suggestions would be great. I am also worried to place too many entries in there, as some may be irrelevant edits or small articles. So perhaps include a link to the list of contributions and created articles would work with a selection of a handful of more significant articles such as FAs would be nice. Is any work being done with this? GoEThe (talk) 16:38, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
