Re: I think you made a small mistake[edit]

Yes, I actually made a mistake by non-changing Zaphod's flag when I had to. Thank you for pointing it out, now it's fixed. --Paginazero - Ø 06:11, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Babel boxes[edit]

Hello. Please note that the old babel templates are deleted, as well as the categories with proficiency level. Don't re-create them. They are replaced by the template {{User language}} and the categories User languagecode. Please have a look at Category:User da for more information. If you want to keep the old layout, please use subst: until no template is left and update the categories. --Thogo (talk) 08:40, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you want Danish text there, please follow the instructions at Template:User language#Translating the template. --Thogo (talk) 09:08, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to use the traditional templates, just use subst: and you have them forever. --Thogo (talk) 09:52, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Boivie. I saw that you substituted the old babel templates. The new template is constantly refined based on suggestions from users. If you have any suggestions to improve {{user language}} to your liking, they are more than welcome.

If you still want to use the old format, this is possible with {{babelold}}, which is the old format but using the new text and categories (I've used it on your user page so you can see if you like it better). If you prefer to substitute entirely, we can use invisible templates to categorize instead, if that's okay with you. You can compare the three formats below. Again, any suggestions are welcome. :)

Hello Boivie. I have replaced the babel templates on your userpage [1], as they are depreciated.  Hazard-SJ  ±  23:15, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits at List of articles every Wikipedia should have[edit]

Please discuss the changes to the list before removing items, because some people might disagree with your choice of articles not important enough. --Yerpo 16:24, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you divided up some of the "thinkers" into different subcategories. This is fine, but your classifications are off. Marx for example is more of an economist than a philosophy. Likewise, Macchiavelli is more a political scientist. Adam Smith was an economist. You put Ibn Khaldun under historians, but even though he was one, he is more famous as a sociologist, political scienist and economist. Chanakya is above all a political scientist although he made economic contributions. Plus, Augustine and al-Ghazali might better be thought of as theologians.
While I thought the category of thinkers was fine, I don't mind dividing it up. Could I make some of those changes though? --Aghniyya 05:40, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I don't know much about any of them, so I briefly read the enwiki articles about the persons, and tried to get them to the best subjects. If you have other opinions about where they belong, please move them to better places. --Boivie 13:50, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update for June 2013[edit]

Hi Boivie,

I don't know if you have program running and have the time but...

Is is possible that you can do the update for this month with regards to List of Wikipedias by sample of articles?

It might be until June 7th before I can do this.

Btw, I changed the weight for Galician from 1.1 to 1.2 which means might have to do some manual work of running gl: with a weight and 1.1 and then 1.2 and manually overwriting the growth column with the 1.1 growth to avoid giving them a fake award. Also, when you save the monthly update the comment must include the word "Update" so the program can figure out which edits are the monthly updates.

Anyway if this seem like something you want to do let me know, otherwise I will eventually get to it, --MarsRover 02:49, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll give it a try tonight. Boivie (talk) 04:54, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
At the first try I got 22 "NoSuchSite error during processing" (inkluding mk and eo) while it last month was only 11. So I'll run it again to see if it will get better. Boivie (talk) 09:53, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it looks good. --MarsRover 05:58, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

10 000[edit]

Can you replace Graveyard (merge with cemetery) and Homology theory (now redirected to Homology (mathematics))? Each is a two entries on a similar topic. ~Sunpriat (обс) 16:01, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I can look into it when I get time, unless you or someone else find a good solution before that. I saw by the way that you have begun changing some items in the list. That's great, because I think that list needs to be improved more. But I was a bit surprised by this change from d:Q935277 to d:Q14253637, where the former has articles at 27 wikipedias, but the one you changed to only has an article at enwiki. Do you really think d:Q14253637 is a better fit for this list? Boivie (talk) 16:03, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at the "name" in the list and this edit. Topic "dry lake" looked suitable for this list, but now I see that the topic "salt pan"(27) or "salt lake"(39) is not in the list. Any of these two "salt" should be in the list 100%, I agree. ~Sunpriat (обс) 16:43, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for ru:Проект:Мириада/Недостающие статьи/Table. Will your bot update the table in the same day, when you update List of Wikipedias by expanded sample of articles? In order that the number of rows in the table equal to the number «Size Absent (0k)» on line ru.~Sunpriat (talk) 02:14, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okey, I can do that. Boivie (talk) 08:08, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Translate some names for hundreds software projects including MediaWiki[edit]

Hello, I'm writing you because you subscribed to a Language support team. As you know, Wikimedia projects exist in almost 300 languages; supporting them all is a big effort so we partner with other organisations. One small but visible thing we miss is that many interwiki links in sidebar (among others) don't offer a translation of the language name when hovered. We're now able to translate 100 more language names in your language.

If you're interested, I can create you an account to submit translations on the CLDR web tool (within June 14): please send an email to ask one and I'll follow up with instructions. On CLDR you can translate and tweak many other things, if you desire; your work will impact hundreds of software projects. Thanks, Nemo 17:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Update ru[edit]

Can you update ru:Проект:Мириада/Недостающие статьи/Table?Sunpriat (talk) 02:40, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wikipedias by sample of articles should be updated at the beginning of August, but it has still not been updated yet. MarsRover, who helps updating in previous months, has not been here for more than a month. Since you help updating List of Wikipedias by expanded sample of articles regularly, I would like to ask for your help about updating this list. Thank you very much. --Yaukasin (talk) 02:53, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I haven't got time to update it this month. Boivie (talk) 05:54, 11 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, an unrelated request: could you please send me the part of the script with alternative weights that you use for the expanded ranking? I'd like to run the script again with those on the non-expanded list to see the difference. — Yerpo Eh? 17:51, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was planning to clean up the code before publishing it, and remove all the parts that are not in use. But I never found time for that... It's at List of Wikipedias by expanded sample of articles/Source code. There are some more differences. My script uses a different set of weights for the languages, and doesn't produce the same sub-pages. And when counting the size of each article, my script is fetching 50 articles at each call, instead of 1 with the original script; so it runs a lot faster. I've been planning to modify the original script with that change, but I haven't found time for that either, yet. Boivie (talk) 20:21, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, all I'm interested is the difference, so it will suffice for now. — Yerpo Eh? 04:51, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your script is ripping numbers, man, I modified it to go through the basic list and it's such a relief not having to wait two days for the result. Do you mind if I post it at List of Wikipedias by sample of articles/Source code? — Yerpo Eh? 17:23, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't mind at all. I'm glad it could help. Boivie (talk) 19:22, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I found a strange issue with your script. I still have to test it by running the old one again, but it looks like for some reason, it doesn't detect changes in wikis with Cyrillic script properly. A user informed me that several articles were mistakenly listed as missing for :bawiki (see my talk page), so I checked in Wikidata and everything seemed ok with interwikis. Then I ran your script again and it returned the same result, but the old (MarsRover's) one picked up new articles correctly, increasing that wiki's score by another 0.08. I also did the same test for be-x-old, where the difference was huge, by more than 1 point, so I'm running the old script now to compare the whole table. Maybe also other exotic scripts are problematic, I will see that when I get the output in two days. Could you please check what could be the problem with the program? This issue would also influence the expanded score, I suspect. — Yerpo Eh? 06:39, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the problem is here:
def GetIwLinks():
    iw_link_path = "IwLinks.json"
    en_label_path = "Labels.json"
    global iw_cache
    global en_labels
    if os.path.isfile(iw_link_path):
        iwf = open(iw_link_path, 'r')
        iw_cache = json.load(iwf)
If the file IwLinks.json is not deleted, the script will use article names from that file instead of searching Wikidata again for all linked articles. I don't know if we should consider that a bug or a feature; I always delete the json files before each run. Boivie (talk) 20:51, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that makes sense, I'll check. Thanks. Although perhaps caching stuff is not the best solution to begin with, when we're interested in changes... — Yerpo Eh? 07:11, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well it could be useful in some cases, like if the run is aborted, than you wouldn't need to collect all that information again. Just like with all the ~xx_output.txt files. I've been thinking about putting the output files, the json files and the itemlist file in a tmp folder. Boivie (talk) 10:02, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe add date to the file names and make the script ignore them if they are too old (>1 week)? — Yerpo Eh? 13:32, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Weight of ba.wiki[edit]

Hi, I want to ask about the weight of the Bashkir Wikipedia in expanded list. Is it possible to change it from 1.0 to 1.3 as the Kazakh Wikipedia? These languages are similar (Kipchak group of the Turkic languages). In the list of 1000 articles BaWiki has 1.4. -- Регион102 (talk) 16:06, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. It will be changed in the next run. Boivie (talk) 21:54, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks! -- Регион102 (talk) 11:14, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Shortest Urdu Articles[edit]

Hi, Could you please add article list for Urdu wikipedia here and other related statistics? Thanks. Muhammad Shuaib (talk) 07:21, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you want a list of the shortest articles? More than half of the items in List of articles every Wikipedia should have/Expanded does not have a link to the Urdu Wikipedia. Boivie (talk) 19:20, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update for May 2016[edit]

List of Wikipedias by expanded sample of articles is supposed to be updated around 16 May. Is there any update? Thanks.--Yaukasin (talk) 02:34, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry. The server where I usually run the script has been down for some weeks, and I haven't had time to set up everything on an other computer until now. Boivie (talk) 04:19, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

why removed request on steward/request permission[edit]

Dear sir, why you removed आशीष भटनागर@hiwiki's request on steward/request permission page? your edit is here.--आर्यावर्त (talk) 11:02, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to correct a problem that occurred earlier. I made a mistake with that request. Sorry. User:Stryn fixed it. Boivie (talk) 12:06, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
yeah. its ok sir. thank you for your reply.--आर्यावर्त (talk) 12:30, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wikipedias by expanded sample of articles (last update)[edit]

I noticed there is a mistake concerning the number of articles for Galician Wikipedia. 2192 (absent) + 5046 (<8k) + 1570 (8-16k) + 1191 (> 16k) = 9999. Where is the missing article? Could you please solve this mistake? Thanks in advance.--Chairego apc (talk) 00:11, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed an error when getting Canada, but I didn't have time to look into it. It seems like the sum is not more than 9999 for any language. I'll try to find time to fix it before the next run. Boivie (talk) 07:47, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. --Chairego apc (talk) 14:56, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Update for August 2018[edit]

List of Wikipedias by expanded sample of articles is supposed to be updated around 16 August. Is there any update? Thanks.--Yaukasin (talk) 04:50, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The server where I usually run the script is down now, and I haven't had the time to set it up on another computer. Maybe someone else could run the script? Maybe User:Yerpo would like to do it? Boivie (talk) 06:53, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Boivie, Yaukasin: running now, should be done in a couple of hours. I tried a couple of times in the past week, but I always got KeyError: u'datavalue' at one point when the script was fetching Wikidata items, now I finally figured out what was wrong.
Also, Boivie, what's with the Q[value] has no wikidata item error? A connection glitch? Secondly, I'm unable to figure out how to implement the new rvslots parameter for fetching revisions (output format is a bit different), could you please check? — Yerpo Eh? 08:20, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
About the Q[value] has no wikidata item error. It started with Canada some months ago, now I think its about 11 items that get that error. My guess is that the API delivers the data in a format that code can't handle, but I haven't examined it further. I also don't know anything about the rvslots problem. Boivie (talk) 16:14, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The script has been returning a lot of warnings about the missing "rvslots" parameter for the past couple of months. Essentially, they're compartmentalizing MediaWiki's revision output so it can handle e.g. template documentation separately. It's documented very briefly for now in mw:API:Revisions and mw:Manual:Slot. What I figured out is that you need to add rvslots="main" to this line in GetManyIws and GetManyArticles functions:
pageRequest = api.Request(action="query", prop="revisions", redirects=True, titles=pipedword, rvprop="content", site=wiki)
However, the API's output is slightly different then (compare with and without), which breaks this line:
pagetext=v[u'revisions'][0][u'*']
It's that last part that I can't fix.Yerpo Eh? 18:32, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
EDIT: scratch that, explaining the problem apparently got me thinking the right way - changing the line to
pagetext=v[u'revisions'][0][u'slots'][u'main'][u'*']
solved the problem (see this change). — Yerpo Eh? 18:42, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I updated the list, but the WriteShortestSection function is not working (I get KeyError: 'art_9990'), so I didn't update that. That's pretty much the extent I can do this, so don't count on me doing it regularly. — Yerpo Eh? 15:50, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. I will try to have something running for the next month. Boivie (talk) 16:14, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

An unrelated note: I noticed that your results had :adjwiki and :jamwiki scores missing due to NoSuchSite error. I had the same problem when updating the basic list, but with help from friendly people at Phabricator, I discovered that my local installation of Pywikibot had the /families/wikipedia_family.py file outdated. You might want to check that, and add other new Wikipedias to the list (you can copy-paste the basic script's source which is up-to-date). — Yerpo Eh? 08:19, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you need help with updating again? — Yerpo Eh? 05:18, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, please. If it's possible for you to do it, I would appreciate it. Boivie (talk) 07:39, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mix'n'match and soweego: call for support[edit]

Dear @Boivie:

       TL;DR:

First, thank you for being a Mix'n'match [2] user.

Does the name soweego ring you a bell?
It's a machine learning system that links Wikidata to large catalogs [3].
It's a close friend of Mix'n'match, which mainly caters for small catalogs.

The latest catalogs uploaded by soweego need some love: why don't you check them out?
If you are a music enthusiast, Discogs and MusicBrainz are what you need: musicians [4], [5], bands [6], [7], and records [8], [9].
Are you passionate about cinema? IMDb is there with actors [10], directors [11], musicians [12], producers [13], writers [14], and movies [15].

I would be really grateful if you could support soweego with a GitHub star:
https://github.com/Wikidata/soweego

Best,
