Translation request[edit]

Hello, I understand you speak Sesotho language. I was wondering if you can translate "Village in China", "Commune in Morocco", and "village in Indonesia". It is for updating Wikidata. Thanks in advance. --Artix Kreiger (Message Wall) 02:30, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Artix Kreiger,
Yes, Sesotho is my native tongue; here are the translations you requested. Please note that context and intonation are very important in Sesotho, therefore supplying more contextual information, while not necessarily mandatory to get the most adequate translations, might help.
Commune in Morocco: Ntlo ea bolulo e arolelanoang ea Morocco
N.B.: Contextual example 1: I have a commune in Morroco
Sesotho translation: Ke na le ntlo ea bolulo e arolelanoang Morocco.
N.B.: Contextual example 2: She lives in a commune in Morroco
Sesotho translation: O lula ntlong ea bolulo e arolelanoang Morocco.
Village in China: Motse o China
N.B.: Contextual example 1: There is a village in China
Sesotho translation: Ho na le motse China.
N.B.: Contextual example 2: I'm from a village in China.
Sesotho translation: Ke tsoa motseng o China.
Village in Indonesia: Motse o Indonesia
I hope I've been of help to your request. Peace!

Hello! Thank you so much. You are a wonderful person. Just wow. That is a huge difference in context. Im gonna say, its motseng o China' as it probably fits the best. Thank you. --Artix Kreiger (Message Wall) 13:09, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
No problem, you're welcome!--Mohahlaula (talk) 15:10, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I'd like your opinion on which of the above would work best. The user above wanted to add descriptions to Wikidata, which are short bits of text which describe what something is, e.g. for Johannesburg, the English description is "city in South Africa". I think "motse o China" fits better there, what do you think? Also, the Sesotho Wikipedia page for China is st:Tjhaena. Is "China" more commonly used than "Tjhaena"? - Nikki (talk) 14:02, 9 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Greetings Nikki; you are right. "motse o China" would fit perfectly. I respond to this messages in a hurry due to a hectic schedule, that's why I overlooked that in the above edit. But, like the translation for "Village in Indonesia" shows, contextually, "Motse o Indonesia/China" would be the correct way to say it. Regarding the Sesotho Wikipedia page for China, it's a pity that the (since dead/dormant) wiki is or wasn't being administered by a Sesotho first language speaker to start with. There are two orthographies for Sesotho, the one I use (the first, or original orthography) is the Lesotho orthography; South Africa has since chosen to follow a different orthography for Sesotho. In the Lesotho orthography, China would be written as Chaena - the '-ch' sound is written similarly as in English (e.g. in words like chair, charm etc.); South Africa's orthography on the other hand writes 'tjh' instead of 'ch'. So, with that said, I think you'd have to choose: which orthography of Sesotho are you writing your translations in? --Mohahlaula (talk) 14:56, 16 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
