Web2Cit templates and tests
[edit]Hi, @Oronsay! Thank you very much for the Web2Cit configurations you have contributed, such as those for www.booksandpublishing.com.au. Just a couple comments to help you make these and future contributions more useful:
- Please, make sure that template paths point to specific URLs (e.g., /articles/2014/03/06/29655/williamson-appointed-fiction-editor-at-island/) rather than generic URL patterns (e.g., /articles/**).
- Also, please define translation tests for every template you define, so other Web2Cit collaborators know what the expected output should be, and they can help maintain and improve the templates.
You can read more about these suggestions here. Thank you! Diegodlh (talk) 21:31, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- I've updated
www.booksandpublishing.com.auconfiguration files as an example:- templates: changed the template path from
/articles/**to/articles/2014/09/18/31319/bbc-national-short-story-award-shortlist-announced/to make it specific (and also fixed the date procedure); - tests: added a translation test for
/articles/2014/09/18/31319/bbc-national-short-story-award-shortlist-announced/.
- templates: changed the template path from

- Thank you, @Diegodlh. I will have a good look at it and try to replicate in my other examples. I had looked at your earlier request and found it complicated, but didn't have brainpower to absorb help so failed to ask. Oronsay (talk) 22:50, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply! Briefly, I see you have created translation templates for other three domains: www.austlit.edu.au, socialsciences.org.au and www.theguardian.com:
- For each domain, choose a specific URL based on which each template may have been defined. For example, https://www.austlit.edu.au/austlit/page/C267513.
- Go to https://web2cit.toolforge.org/, type in the URL chosen above and click on "Extract":
- Click on "edit" beneath "Translation output" to edit translation templates. Change invalid template paths (e.g.,
/austlit/page/*) to valid specific paths (e.g.,/austlit/page/C267513) and save. - Click on "edit" beneath "Expected output" to edit translation tests. Add a new test for the same path (e.g.,
/austlit/page/C267513), indicate the expected output for each translation field and save. See Web2Cit#Add_a_translation_test for more info.
- Click on "edit" beneath "Translation output" to edit translation templates. Change invalid template paths (e.g.,
- Let me know if I can help you in any way! Cheers, Diegodlh (talk) 12:41, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Web2Cit template paths
[edit]Hi @Oronsay! Thank you for being a Web2Cit contributor!
Some translation templates you have worked on may need attention. Could you help us fix them?
Translation templates should be based on specific webpages and ideally should have corresponding translation tests indicating the expected output. This is important for maintainability, so other contributors can understand why a template has been set in some way, and so the Web2Cit Monitor can detect when citations break.
We found some templates for paths that do not have a corresponding test. This is usually because the path is generic (i.e., not corresponding to a specific webpage of interest; e.g., / or /**), or simply because a translation test hasn't been defined for that path.
Here's a list of domain configurations you have contributed to, and corresponding template paths for which no tests have been defined. Other editors may have contributed to these files as well and they will or have been notified too.
To help us, for as many of these paths as you can, could you please make sure:
- that it corresponds to a specific webpage of interest, and
- that a corresponding translation test has been defined?
| Domain | Template path |
|---|---|
| socialsciences.org.au | /academy-fellow/* |
| www.austlit.edu.au | /austlit/page/C267513 |
| www.theguardian.com | /** |
For the full list of domains affected, you can check our new Web2Cit Monitor Results with missing tests category.
Note that to help prevent this issue in the future, the templates editor has been updated to only accept paths that already have a test defined.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you again for your support!
Diegodlh (talk) 22:55, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Diegodlh: Much as I might like to help, and I have really appreciated using the first two, above, I haven't been near Web2Cit since I worked on them over two years ago. The first I use annually when new fellows are elected even though it didn't give the full answer, at least Web2Cit maintained the full url which was stripped by the citoid tool; the second I use frequently as I have a particular interest in Australian literature. Are there any videos available that walk a beginner through the whole process? If so, please direct me to them. Oronsay (talk) 07:00, 22 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, @Oronsay! Thank you for your reply. Let me explain more clearly:
- For socialsciences.org.au could you please choose one specific URL matching the
/academy-fellow/*path pattern? Then, please use this form to add a test for that path and indicate the expected output for each field. The form should be self-explanatory, but you may find more information about tests in Web2Cit/Docs/Tests. - For www.austlit.edu.au, the specific URL has been chosen already (https://www.austlit.edu.au/austlit/page/C267513) but the test is missing. Please use this form to add a test for path /austlit/page/C267513, indicating the expected output.
- Finally, for www.theguardian.com please choose a specific article URL, preferably one with an author name, and add a test using this form.
- For socialsciences.org.au could you please choose one specific URL matching the
- Once you are done with all of this, please let me know and I will fix the template paths as required. And let me know if you have any questions! Thank you! Diegodlh (talk) 21:32, 26 June 2026 (UTC)
