License question[edit]

Hi. In the file history for File:Jimmy outdoor long.png you wrote "License: CC-BY-SA" - which version of the license were you referring to? --DannyS712 (talk) 04:52, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@DannyS712: In hindsight guess we can mean the lastest veriosn :D Seddon (WMF) (talk) 15:35, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Seddon and Quiddity (WMF). (Seddon) I realize that you are not currently working with CentralNotice, but am leaving this here as you created the template and hopefully will know the most about it. I am currently working on lint fixes and came across Template:CentralNotice Timeline. I have been able to fix its use of the deprecated center tag but Special:LintErrors shows it as also using "tt". However, it is not using that in its source. I see that the template uses "tag:timeline". Where are tags kept so that I may try and hunt down this one lint error? Thank you for your time and assistance. All the best, TheSandDoctor Talk 22:16, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

TheSandDoctor I believe that's just a parser tag, that is invoking EasyTimeline. Ah, yes, mentioned here mw:Extension:EasyTimeline#Using the current date. I suggest searching phab for existing tasks, or filing one if none exist. HTH. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 15:35, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The fundraiser that never came[edit]

Thank you for fundraising updates, but, ah, if this year's fundraiser starts on "November 31", I think the WMF might eventually run into some financial trouble. :) --Yair rand (talk) 01:35, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Yair rand: Did I not mention our new strategy for 2020? Zero-point fundraising :P Drawing funds from imaginary pockets of space time. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 02:34, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Having seen the usually painful and/or mind-invading processes needed to acquire them, suddenly the irritation of a banner campaign seems way more tolerable! Nosebagbear (talk) 19:59, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Nosebagbear: I did consider more intrusive methods but the technology just wasn't ready. :P Seddon (WMF) (talk) 20:04, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WMF fundraising campaign 2020, banner in french[edit]

Hello,
in the text of the blue banner displayed during the ongoing WMF fundraising campaign on the french WP, we would appreciate that the mercantile sentence "Alors si Wikipédia vous a transmis l’équivalent de 2 € de connaissances cette année, prenez vous aussi un instant pour faire un don" be replaced by "Alors pour assurer la préservation de ce bien commun universel et encourager son amélioration, faites un don". Besides, that sentence is a bit redundant with "Un don de 2 € suffirait à faire prospérer Wikipédia pendant de nombreuses années".

For some other opinions about this request, see Le Bistro, 7 October 2020.

Best regards,

- ContributorQ (talk) 12:07, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ContributorQ: over night the team have prepped a test which you can see here. We'll probably test it over the weekend. I'll let you know the outcome. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 15:55, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your comprehension. --ContributorQ (talk) 16:46, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Seddon,

the proposed modification of the banner's message has been on display for a few days and has been removed. Could you please explain why ? --ContributorQ (talk) 18:13, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ContributorQ: so we tested it but it wasn't successful and lost by 5% but we think there is potential there. The team is quite stretched but is going to try another variation because they really like the direction. I will let you know if run another test. CN wishlist survey: just noticing...[edit]

Hi Seddon,

I was on a smaller Wikipedia just now, and noticed the English banner about the wishlist survey (without a link to translate wiki for optional translating the message?).

Curious of what information would be presented to the users of the pap Wikipedia and in which language, I clicked, but then I got "Community Wishlist Survey 2021/pap: This page doesn't currently exist; you can search this title in other pages or edit this page. If you recently created this page, try purging the server cache or searching the deletion log." It does not even refer to the English meta page, even though the banner that was presented to me was in English? It might be confusing to have a user message in English, but no landing page (whatsoever) to go with it...?

I do not want to criticize (you know me!) but just want to offer some outsider-perspective on the user experience. Ciell (talk) 12:12, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Ciell: thanks for the feedback. I saw @Trizek (WMF): made some changes. I've also changed the link to use Special:MyLanguage which should resolve the linking issues. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 00:03, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

US Fundraising[edit]

Hi Seddon, just a thought - I don't think I saw this idea floating around here but have with some other charities. Someone from finance or legal might want to check this over, but if I recall correctly there is currently (until Dec 31'st) a special tax incentive for US taxpayers to make up to $300 of donations this year to any charity. This is a link to more information on it: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/special-300-tax-deduction-helps-most-people-give-to-charity-this-year-even-if-they-dont-itemize I've seen some other organizations incorporate this to help spurn last min donors that may other wise not dontate anywhere. “librarians” in French[edit]

Hi, “librarians” means in French “bibliothécaires”, the French word “libraires” is a false friend, it means “booksellers”.

Could you please correct these translations? The current fundraising banner for Switzerland is incorrect.

Thank you very much.

Because even the WMF deserve a Merry Christmas![edit]

Meta doesn't believe in Christmas templates, so please use your imagination!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! In this toughest of years, thank you for continuing to care about others - both in your editing, your words, and just in your being. Roll on 2021 and I'll see you there! Nosebagbear (talk)

Wiki Loves Africa[edit]

Hello Joseph

I wanted to get in touch with you this year to discuss banners for Wiki Loves Africa 2021. We will launch Feb 15th ! I wanted to know if you had new and fresh insights in terms of banner efficiency that could benefit WLA this year ! Cheers Anthere (talk) 21:22, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Gender gap banner[edit]

Hello, the German translation of the gender gap banner is wrong: English: Help close the knowledge gender gap on Wikipedia this March. Current translation: "Hilf diesen März mit, die Wissenslücke über Gender in der Wikipedia zu schließen" This states that there is a knowledge gap about gender. It should say that there is a gap of information about persons that is caused or correlated by their gender. My suggestion: "Hilf diesen März mit, den Rückstand in der Wikipedia im Wissen über Frauen zu verkleinern.' I tried to change this or add this as a remark, but was not able to do so.Schrauber5 (talk) 02:22, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Schrauber5: Done. This is an archive of Seddons talkpage though, next time your edit might go by unnoticed. Ciell (talk) 20:06, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
