This page shows:
- A table of Wikimedia Foundation salaries based on the public Form 990s, for easy comparison over the years. The amounts reported are for calendar year, not fiscal year.[1] (Salaries are in United States dollars and base salaries only, excluding "other compensation", which can add as much as $30,000 or more.)
- A table of "Salaries and wages" totals from the WMF financial statements, broken down according to different categories.
- A table of the "Salaries, other compensation, employee benefits" figures reported in the public Form 990s vs. the reported number of employees in each year, along with the average total per employee for each year.
Trends:
- The WMF's "Salaries and wages" total more than doubled over the four most recent years for which statements are available, from $33,731,089 in 2016/2017 to $67,857,676 in 2020/2021.
- The "Salaries, other compensation, employee benefits" total per WMF employee increased by 38% over the four most recent years for which Form 990s are available, from $138,487.10 per employee in 2015 to $191,185.27 per employee in 2019.

Salaries, other compensation, employee benefits and number of employees as reported in Form 990[edit]
The figures in this table reflect the data in line 5 (Total number of individuals employed in calendar year) and line 15 (Salaries, other compensation, employee benefits) of the Form 990's Part I Summary.
2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Total | 2,073,313 | 3,303,543 | 7,312,120 | 11,749,500 | 16,023,637 | 19,979,908 | 26,125,610 | 31,713,546 | 33,733,998 | 38,598,155 | 46,057,613 | 55,634,913 |
Number of employees | 26 | 36 | 72 | 107 | 134 | 158 | 192 | 229 | 230 | 229 | 255 | 291 |
Cost per employee* | 79,742.81 | 91,765.08 | 101,557.22 | 109,808.41 | 119,579.38 | 126,455.11 | 136,070.89 | 138,487.10 | 146,669.56 | 168,550.90 | 180,618.09 | 191,185.27 |
- Cost per employee: It's been claimed that certain contractors listed in Part V, line 1a of the Form 990 (there were a total of 82 in 2019, e.g.) might be included in the salary total. This would reduce these figures somewhat. The WMF has refused to answer related questions. (See mailing list discussion and Form 990 talk page.) Input from experts on Form 990 financial reporting welcome.
