Several group members met with AffCom liasons Tanvir and and Kirill We discussed possible group names. Wiki User Group LGBT is emerging as the preferred name.

We discussed user group status vs. thematic chapter status, and future goals. User groups do not require formal membership. At the moment, there is no real need for chapter status. This would require additinal overhead and reporting requirements. Benefits of user group status include: formal affiliation, appropriate use of logo, branding. We will continue to focus on LGBT-related projects and content development.

TO DO: Determine which two people will sign the user group agreement. Vote on the user group name at Saturday afternoon's meetup.

James shared that Wikimedia DC is happy to fund LGBT-related projects in the US, when possible and appropriate.

We discussed/reviewed the inaugural Wiki Loves Pride campaign, including challenges, successes and future ideas.

  • There was a short review of the inaugural Wiki Loves Pride campaign and successes in interwiki collaboration under the WM-LGBT umbrella
  • What is the Foundation doing to support LGBT persons who live in regions of the world less tolerant of LGBT communities?
    It was recognized that WM-LGBT events and processes need to be able to include Wikimedians living in countries where public participation in an LGBT group may put them at risk of harassment or prosecution. Respecting choices of anonymity and confidentiality will remain a necessity of how WM-LGBT operates.
  • Harassment and discrimination within the Wikimedia movement; prevention vs. reaction
    There were several voices concerned about the issue of harassment/hounding and though there were no clear actions on this during the discussion, it might be useful to have a few members set up a task force to look into solutions, such as a best practice FAQ, or an email address that Wikimedians can write to to discuss any LGBT related issue they are concerned about... we can be a sympathetic ear and offer sensible advice without giving specific legal advice or advocating any political viewpoint
  • Meaning of user group status and the benefits
    We stay light-weight, with no registration of members, no legal reporting or need for public records of directors. There is no urgent need for a bank account, and there have been several offers of direct financial support from other organizations, such as WMDC and WikiProject Med, should reasonable project proposals that need money come up in the near future
    There is no need to count membership, this would otherwise be an issue as we have a large proportion of our group who are happy to both support and take part in events, but have reason to not do so publicly
  • Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group - with a show of hands, this was the clear and strong preference for the user group name
    (other options were Wikimedia Gender and Wikimedia LGBT User Group), the plus sign was deemed to be more inclusive for other sexual and gender minorities who do not specifically identify as L, G, B or T
