Tech News

[edit]

FYI [1] --Nemo 07:29, 22 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Nemo bis: Entirely predictable and yet a still bit disappointing. I predict Tech News will transform into a one-way method of communication, and then slowly die, just as Wikimedia Quarto and others had done before. odder (talk) 11:02, 23 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

You're awesome

[edit]

Thanks for taking care of this, and a zillion other community requests. You are wonderful. --Ori Livneh (talk) 19:13, 31 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, @Ori. It feels very nice to be appreciated. odder (talk) 18:16, 1 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, @Nemo —¸this is all very interesting. odder (talk) 19:42, 13 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

WMF promises

[edit]

QED: phabricator:T44894. --Nemo 18:08, 26 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the link, @Federico. I fear I can't form an informed opinion on this at the moment due to lack of any hard data (of the kind you were able to provide with regards to the Portuguese Wikipedia), but in general I would say this is a pretty bad solution to a rather solvable problem. On the other hand, we're again here seeing an issue of a small wiki community not being able to manage huge amounts of spam and bad faith edits that are affecting their wiki and having a very negative effect on their ability to improve their projects — and that's hugely saddening to witness happen over and over again. odder (talk) 22:32, 26 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
To be precise, there is no indication that there are huge or unusual amounts of anything. It seems the community mostly wanted to force a couple persons to register in order to educate them better. --Nemo 19:51, 27 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

What is your point

[edit]

Hoi, I fail to see your point. What we have is tldr. It does not do what is expected to do. I provide you with an argument why and you are not courteous in that way. Thank you for failing to understand what is needed. GerardM (talk) 14:37, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

What future IdeaLab campaigns would you like to see?

[edit]

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

Future IdeaLab Campaigns results

[edit]

Last December, I invited you to help determine future ideaLab campaigns by submitting and voting on different possible topics. I'm happy to announce the results of your participation, and encourage you to review them and our next steps for implementing those campaigns this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time to participate and submit ideas.

With great thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, Wikimedia Foundation. 23:55, 26 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I didn't participate, though. odder (talk) 11:47, 27 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Should FuzzyBot remove all potentially outdated translations?

[edit]

Hello, thanks for adding multiple new translations in your language here at Meta-Wiki in recent years. Please join the discussion with your opinion: Should FuzzyBot automatically remove all potentially outdated translations?. Nemo (talk) 12:01, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Configuration disguised as translation

[edit]

This is going to be a mess... Nemo 05:45, 10 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Nemo; I'm not sure I follow this train of thought. I haven't been following the goings-on about the wikipedia.org portal and I haven't been to Gerrit for a while, so I don't really know what's going here. I would've thought that switching to managing translations on Translatewiki would be a nice and welcome change, no? odder (talk) 12:22, 10 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
But now nobody knows which names to trust and where updates should go, see e.g. phabricator:T145927. --Nemo 09:44, 26 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Blocked IP-address

[edit]

Hi TKozlowski,
a few minutes ago I got a message my IP-address had been blocked by you. I'd like to edit the German pronunciation file De-Demos.ogg: Instead of
[[Category:German pronunciation of nouns]]
I'd like to rewrite it with
[[Category:German pronunciation of noun flections]].
Are you able to help me?
Greetings --Jeuwre (talk) 19:15, 11 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Jeuwre, thanks for the message and apologies for the inconvenience. I made the change for you, however I would need to have a little bit more information about the block that you have fallen victim of. Can you tell me if this problem still occurs and if so, can you e-mail me with your IP address and, if possible, the error message that you see? You can use this page to send me an e-mail; thanks! odder (talk) 11:07, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi TKozlowski,
thank you for implementing the change. Unfortunately when I tried again to edit De-Demos.ogg a few minutes ago yesterday's fault didn't happen again. I don't have yesterday's IP-address, I'm sorry. If the error message surfaces again you'll get a message. Thanks for your support. --Jeuwre (talk) 14:56, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Edit ban - unlock request

[edit]

Hi TKozlowski,
this is the second time in 6 weeks, that I got an edit ban to edit one of my pronunciation examples. The specific ban text I got a few minutes ago is:

user:Holder abuse as global sysop

[edit]

Hi Odder. This global admin has been deleting photographs relevant to Bikol Wikipedia project. I am a former admin and had finally blocked him. He asked me to unblock his account even askin for an apology and promised not to delete more files. I blocked him for he was guilty of his action but he unblocked himself again twice then he immediately find a way to remove my admin rights via another global admin who like himself does not speak the local language. This kind of admims are the reason why it is very hard to keep new contributors and it also pisses old contributors like us. --Filipinayzd (talk) 15:10, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Filipinayzd: I'm sorry to see this happen. @Holder has a proven track record of ignoring small local communities and abusing his privileges as a global administrator. Unfortunately, as evidenced by his latest actions on the Bikol Wikipedia, he has managed to get away with this so far, as there is generally little interest from the global community in cases like this. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment: actions like this are very much counterproductive, both with regards to brand new contributors and old hands like you and me. It's a Pyrrhic victory for Holder, and a loss for the movement, however I do hope you'll find a welcoming space elsewhere in Wikimedia; after all, illegitimi non carborundum. odder (talk) 23:03, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

plz see discussion about logo update

[edit]

Dear Odder, Plz SEE HERE discussion and put his well-polished SVG routines at work. thanks.JogiAsad (talk) 07:38, 22 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@JogiAsad: I'm not sure I follow. I created File:Wiktionary-logo-sd.svg in December 2012 and I can see the Sindhi Wiktionary has been using this logo for quite some time. The "Wiktionary" and "The free dictionary" translations into Sindhi haven't been changed since then. Is there still something wrong with this logo? odder (talk) 19:41, 23 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
odder, Dear, the "Wiktionary" and "The free dictionary" translations into Sindhi are Ok but having a single missing letter in the transliteration/translation of 'the free dictionary' its translation into Sindhi for "Wiktionary" is وڪِيغَت and "The free dictionary" is هڪ کليل مواد لغت and instead of using spaces in the translation letter use the text as I am providing here , please use
Text in English Text in Sindhi (Sindhi translation)
  • Wiktionary = وڪِيغَت
  • The free dictionary = هڪ کليل مواد لغت

You may copy this Sindhi text from here and make alterations,Thanks..JogiAsad (talk) 16:04, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@JogiAsad: I apologize for this belated response. I have tried to create this improved logo multiple times since your message, however for me, these two texts appear exactly the same. Could you please review the text you provided again? I'm not sure whether my browser/operating system fully support Sindhi fonts, is there some guidance available on-line that you could link me to? Thank you, odder (talk) 22:42, 30 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
odder Dear, thanks for your continuous hardworking, I appreciate your efforts, Yes I have created a guidanceSEE THIS IMAGE and directed points in it, if still you need to ask anything you may ask. and the text you asking I have reviewed the text is correct. but logo is not yet altered as requested.
@JogiAsad: Thank you; I think I see the problem now. I have just uploaded a new version of the logo with the missing alif — can you please review it again to see if it's correct? odder (talk) 09:12, 19 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Clapping, Well-done dear Odder, however it took a long time to let you understand, may be I had done that screenshot earlier to guide you through that what actually the problem we wanted to be solved. Anyway, now it looks exactly correct in text. Now tell me how can I insert it on sdwiktionary main page replacing previous image? I think it can be performed by local admin or the global admin. I have run a consensus at Sindhi Wiktionary for granting me the admin (sysop) rights , I have a vast experience and skills of translations from English to Sindhi, Urdu and vice versa , modules creation, templates making, overseeing the admin tasks at Sindhi Wikipedia, So I am wiling to contribute for Sindhi Wiktionary and if you can endorse it, because there is no admin at Sindhi Wiktionary besides a low traffic of users as well. I want to put my all technical and admin-ship skills to bring Sdwiktionray more successful. Thanks. JogiAsad (talk) 13:59, 19 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
@JogiAsad: Project logos need to be submitted to Wikimedia's Git repository (namely mediawiki-config). I've submitted Gerrit patch #474826 and it's already been accepted and deployed on the live website, so you should be seeing the update logo on your screen right now. Hope you like it :) odder (talk) 01:02, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
I am much thankful to your kindness, I am glad to see its not live on Sindhi Wiktionary, I am striving for the Sindhi language editions of Wikipedia (Sindhi Wikipedia), Wiktionary (Sindhi Wiktionary) and working on Incubator for other projects in Sindhi language i.e. Sindhi Wikibooks, Sindhi Wikitravel, SindhiWikiQuote, SindhiWikiNews, etc, besides this I am striving to translate here on meta for many templates page for Sindhi language, in-spite of limited resources , I have been jobless since July 1, 2017 till September 20, 2018, and this all times I have undergone a very hardships of life but somehow I have managed to survive and I have never given up my enthusiasm for Wikimedia projects in Sindhi language, I have been also running awareness campaigns through social media, workshops etc in Pakistan particularly in Sindh for WMF projects and I do so because I am the free knowledge enthusiast. anyway I am sorry that I have written this story anyway thanks. I intends to award you a WIkiLove or award for performing gigantic task of Sindhi Wiktionary logo.JogiAsad (talk) 21:29, 21 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Here in meta wiki there was no available option to award you in recognition of your work so I have done that at A Barnstar for you on enwiki. JogiAsad (talk) 22:17, 21 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
@JogiAsad: Thank you very much for the barnstar, I appreciate it! And thank you for being so patient with me. odder (talk) Happy editing! 13:37, 22 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Community Wishlist Survey 2020

[edit]

Hello!

You are getting this message because you've previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey, in either the Wikisource or Wiktionary categories. I wanted to let you know that this year's survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until November 11. Unlike previous years, we are only accepting proposals for non-Wikipedia content projects with no dedicated teams (i.e., Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews). You can learn more on the survey page.

You can vote on proposals from November 20 to December 2. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won't send out a separate reminder to you about that. We look forward to your participation. Thank you! IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Request for an Official logo for the Gurene Wikimedia Community

[edit]

@Odder @Amire80

Hello Odder & Amir,

I write to your outfit on behalf of the Gurene Wikimedia Community to request an official logo for the Farefari language as we are making progress towards acquiring a new Wikipedia for our Wikpedia Incubator.

Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon. Dnshitobu (talk) 23:23, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Dnshitobu: If I understand correctly and you'd like a logo for a Wikipedia in the Farefari language, then I need to know the translations for "Wikipedia" and "The free encyclopedia". I can see that the language uses the Latin alphabet with a few additional characters, so it should be pretty straightforward to create the logo. Thank you, odder (talk) 13:17, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Odder, thank you for accepting to help us with a logo. The translations for "Wikipedia" and "The free encyclopedia" are "Wikipiidiya" and "Zaŋa Yelebɛa Gɔŋɔ". I am on standby if you have any further requests. Thank you Dnshitobu (talk) 09:10, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Dnshitobu: Apologies for the delay in getting back to you on this. I've created Wikipedia-logo-v2-gur.svg; I hope you like it. Let me know if anything's off with the file and, of course, good luck with your project! odder (talk) 19:22, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Odder Hello! In fact your response is very timely. We actually needed it badly today and I just got the alert. Thank you so much for the creation. We will be forever grateful. Moreso, it is very beautiful, and we love it. Dnshitobu (talk) 20:18, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
