More often than not, students from the target area of the University do not know where and how to access useful information to aid in their research and general learning. Even among the very few who have the wherewithal, Wikipedia is almost alien to them. It is nearly impossible to come across Wikipedia being referenced in the scholarly articles of students when they submit their assignments. Apart from this, there is also the problem of many of our tertiary students knowing close to nothing when it comes to Wikipedia and its related platforms such as Wikicommons, Wikidata, Wiktionary, etc. All these stem from the general wrong notion that Wikipedia is “Unreliable.”

In addition, there is also the inherent lack of information regarding how young passionate students and lecturers or teachers in academia can get involved in the information creation and knowledge sharing process and the avenue that Wikimedia provides in that regard. This, clearly can be seen as responsible for the lower numbers of editors in the area. I am therefore envisaging a sensitization drive directed at creating awareness amongst students and lecturers on the university’s campus. This should comprise a series of online as well as physical training engagements on the process of editing, accessing, and usage of information on Wikipedia. We shall further engage participants on sister projects of Wikipedia, especially wikidata and wikicommons and how to make contributions on them. Consequently, this project aims to bring on board, at least, sixty new users or editors who will be given training on how to contribute to Wikimedia by way of edits and translation.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

AWARENESS CREATION:

Having reached out to the school and sought permission for the program, I intend to liaise with some of the student leaders to assist with the spreading of information. This will involve the designing and printing of fliers and posters for the program which will in turn be posted on notice boards as well as authorized vantage points on the campus. Some of these flyers and posters will be shared to students via the various social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. Also, as part of the awareness creation, I intend to reach out to some of the lecturers of the school in, especially, the Faculty of Education to discuss with them the program schedule as well as solicit their involvement and full participation in the program and (Later) general contribution to Wikimedia. All these will be followed up by the first major physical meeting with students as well as staff intended to whip up their enthusiasm towards the upcoming edit-a-thons.

THREE PHYSICAL EDIT-A-THONS Week 2

Participants will first be taken through account creation aimed at obtaining Wikimedia USERNAMES for themselves. This will be followed by introducing these participants or NEW users to the Wikimedia platform and how to access information. Focus will be on the proper ways of retrieving, editing, accessing and contributing to the wikimedia projects. Introduction to Wikimedia projects, new users will learn what Wikipedia is all about. New users are expected to acquire basic skills and techniques to make edits on Wikipedia.

Week 3: Following the completion of the in-person training, I will follow through with the second training specifically to introduce new users or editors to Wikidata and to provide training on how to edit items and/or create labels for items on Wikidata.

Week 4:

The last in-person or physical training will focus on Wikimedia commons, where experienced facilitators will train new users to be able to upload photos. Users (Both new and old) will be taught the basic requirements of uploading good photos on wikimedia commons.

ONE ONLINE TRAINING Week 5 I have the intent to crown the training campaign with one online training for all participants. This online training is meant to mop up all that’s been learnt for further clarification. It will also provide an avenue for the facilitators and I to assess the outcome of the edit-a-thons.

CONTEST: The final 3 weeks shall be used organize a contest. This contest will cover the 3 Wikimedia projects referred to in this proposal i. e. Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. At the end of the third week, winners will be declared, awarded through gift vouchers and given certificates for their efforts.

This project mainly targets students, as well as lecturers of the University for Development Studies in Ghana. First, there will be concurrent radio announcements and the distribution of flyers and posters all over the university’s campus targeted at getting students to participate in the awareness creation meeting. Student leaders will be engaged to assist in propagating the intention of my team and I, also help whip up enthusiasm among students and lecturers alike. During the maiden engagement which is the awareness creation on Wikimedia and its projects, interested participants will be guided to fill a google form expressing their desire to be part of the event. Then, participants will subsequently be guided to create accounts on Meta-Wiki before the various training sessions and edit-a-thons.
