University of Calabar is one of the oldest Universities in the South-south Nigeria with thousands of students and hundreds of teaching and non teaching staff. Unlike other part of the country that has different youths and students contributing to Wikimedia Foundation project, University of Calabar has never witness any training and as an active editor who have had the opportunity of contributing to the platform for the last three years, I found it necessary to have a project that will recruit more people on campus to join the movement. The project will contribute in three different ways; to make Wikipedia and it's sisters' project acceptable in the University Community, to encourage and engage the students and lecturers in contributing to Wikipedia and it's sisters' project and to create a community of editors.
Approaches:
- 1. Making Wikipedia and it's Sisters project Recognised in the University of Calabar Community : Despite Wikipedia and its affiliated projects being distinctive and widely recognized, a substantial number of educators and students exhibit skepticism due to the conventional notion that the accessibility for anyone to edit and contribute to its pages undermines credibility. Addressing this concern, my team of seasoned Wikimedia editors and I plan to conduct a comprehensive awareness campaign, both online and offline, at the University of Calabar. The primary focus will be to emphasize the authenticity and significance of Wikimedia projects, aiming to enhance trust and acceptance among academic communities.
- 2. Promoting active participation of students and lecturers in Wikimedia projects: A prevalent misconception among students and lecturers is the perception that Wikimedia projects are automated processes devoid of human influence, leading to the belief that the information contained is static. To address this misconception, my team and I aim to create awareness about utilizing Wikimedia projects for research purposes. By engaging the university community, we will provide guidance on how to enhance Wikimedia contents, fostering a better understanding of the dynamic nature of the platform and dispelling the notion that it is solely controlled by machines.
- 3. Establishing the University of Calabar Wikimedia Community: Following the training of staff and students, it is imperative to ensure the ongoing success of the project by uniting them on a platform. This forum will serve as a collaborative space where participants can address issues and overcome challenges encountered during their contributions to Wikimedia projects, ensuring the sustained viability of the initiative.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
1. Onboarding session: This would be done to welcome and familiarise the participants with the Wikimedia foundation projects .
- 2. Two online trainings, m: This would be done to introduce the participants to basic and soft editing across Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons Wikimedia
- 3. Two Offline trainings: This would be done to introduce the participants to the most technical aspect of the training like article creation and wikidata item creation
- 3. Closing ceremony: This is where the outstanding contributors would be awarded and certificates would be given to the participants
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
There are currently 6 team members for this project (including myself).

Also after the training follow-up would be made in form of a mop-up campaign to further discuss grey areas based on summative evaluation of the training exercise.
